As I started to read today’s letter, I really started to wonder “What was on that roll of film?” It sounds like something out of today’s tabloids. The roll of film contained pictures that were alright for my grandmother to look at, but not appropriate for Dr. Lentz’s wife. Huh? It also made me think “Where are these photographs?” I don’t believe they were the pictures that were taken when my grandmother was in Norfolk. Maybe they were….Or maybe the roll was exposed when Dr. Lentz opened his camera incorrectly and the pictures were never developed. Sigh. Perhaps my grandmother will shed some light on the issue in one of her letters.

Letter transcription:
Mon. A.M.
Dear Mother,
I’m starting this before muster and will plan on finishing later. Sometime later. Things are still in a turmoil. As yet I haven’t received any mail but I guess that is my fault because I told you not to address me in Cub 13 and the new address will not be used until later so any mail that you may have sent is being held until later.
I’m going to get that money order today I hope.
Lentz took out that film roll from
(page 2) his camera and I’m going to send it to you to have it developed. He didn’t want to send it to his wife because there were pictures she shouldn’t see. It is the small type and will have to be enlarged. I don’t know if they do it there or not. He took several pictures of me. Have them developed and send his to him. His Just send them to me and I can give them to him. If it costs too much to have them developed and enlarged just skip it. Do what you think best. He opened the camera by mistake and may have ruined the whole film. I’m not sure.
If you want you can still write a letter address to Cub 13 Moffett field and I may get it here if not it will come later.
(page 3) I never did get the uniform checks. If I do I think your power of attorney would give you the privilege to sign them in case I sent them back. Will see what + where etc when they do come.
We seem to have a fine bunch of men here but we probably will be at each others throats if we are together to[o] long.
It is still cold here both night and day much different than in Norfolk.
Well maybe I’ll have more to write later. When I get the money order.
(page 4) Finally I got the money orders. I’ll write again this eve and send the slips that go with the money orders.
Love Daddy

The mind boggles
…
The way he said, “Lentz took out THAT film roll,” makes me think your grandma already knew what was on it. Since it wasn’t mentioned in previous letters, she probably knew about it from when she was there.
Didn’t Lentz drink? Maybe there were party-type photos from when your grandma visited grandpa and maybe Lentz’s wife disapproved of his drinking.
I remember one time when my sons were young and my grandpa was laughingly telling me some of the stuff he did when he was 12-14 years old. I said to him, “Grampa, you was a BAD boy – I’m glad I’m your granddaughter and not your mother!” LOL
Our sainted ancestors
Thanks for the thoughts. I was thinking it was some medical pictures and perhaps his wife was sensitive to seeing them, but I like your theory better. My grandmother did not drink or approve of alcohol either but if she already knew. I certainly don’t think it was nude photographs,,,LOL
