Since we have finally gotten to the part in our narrative when Virginia Zell dropped David and broke his leg, I wanted to be able to share an additional viewpoint of the story, from Virginia’s father, Russell Zell. The only difficulty I have had in sharing this viewpoint was the medium of Russell’s story. The story was not told in a letter, but in audio form.
In 1967, Roscoe retired from general practice in Kentland, and accepted a position at Purdue University as an instructor, to teach new doctors the craft. When Roscoe retired, he was given two retirement parties. One was given by the townspeople of Kentland. Family and friends from all over came to the celebration, and several people told stories about Roscoe. Last year, my father found the audio tape and had it digitally converted. The audio is about 43 minutes long. Russell begins speaking about 29 minutes into the tape. However, if you have the time, I recommend listening to the whole recording. Both of Roscoe’s siblings, Ruth and Floyd, speak on the audio. The most disappointing part of the audio is that neither Roscoe or Gladys are actually heard. I have illustrated the audio with photographs of Roscoe’s life from childhood to 1967 when the tape was made.

I was disappointed that my folks are not heard on the tape, but even so it is a treasure. It was so wonderful to hear Russell’s story about Virginia getting a letter from Roscoe to help her feel better.
Correction: “accepted a position at Purdue University as an instructor, to teach new doctors the craft.” No, I don’t think so. As I recall he joined the Pursue health staff to treat students. So it was another medical practice, but one in which he had limited and regular hours. I may be wrong, but I don’t think Purdue has a medical school.
The video is brilliantly done…reminds me of a Ken Burns documentary….the way the photos transition.
The part of the tape I watched is very well done! I wish I had more time.
