When did it become law that people had to get marriage licenses? And why?
I am not sure on that but different states and countries have different procedures. In old New England, the banns had to be read for three weeks before the wedding. I have seen in other places where a bond had to be paid in order for a wedding to occur.
I used to work with a Haller. Since I have see the Haller name a lot in your blog it is making me think of him 🙂 He was from Erie, PA.
