This photograph is not labeled but I presume the subjects to be some of Roscoe’s early students. Roscoe graduated from high school in 1922 and began teaching the next school year in the rural schools of Clay County. Between terms he attended the Indiana State Normal School in Terre Haute, graduating in 1927. By the mid 1930s, Roscoe stopped teaching and began medical school. The clothing in this photograph does not make it easy to date so I can only narrow it down by the years of Roscoe’s teaching career, circa 1922-1936.

The Liechty School is still standing… my sister lives there.
I would love to see a picture of the building currently.
Well, Floyd was born in 1911 so if this was one of Roscoe’s first classes that he taught, say 1923-1924ish, then Floyd would have been about 12 or 13. The boy looks like he is at least that age. The one standing next to him in the back row wearing overalls looks a little familiar too, but I don’t know who he might have been.
My first reaction when I saw the photo: the boy second from the left in the back row: Floyd…but I could be wrong.
Love the pictures and Post, were you able to find the old school? Does it still exist?
I don’t know for sure all the schools that my grandfather taught at. One of them was the Liechty school. Clay county consolidated most of their schools in the 1920s so very few of the old schools exist anymore. The brick building that housed the Liechty school was sold I believe but I don’t know if it still stands.

I hope so too! I guess that is part of the reason I am posting them online. We never know who might come across these pictures. One of the boys in the back row looks a little familiar, perhaps one of the younger Yegerlehner cousins. But who knows?
