Dear Daddy –

No letters today – in fact none since Tues. when I rec’d yours of May 17 & 18 – but probably will get a lot at once. The 100⁰⁰ ck hasn’t come yet but likely will come with the rest of the delayed mail.

I am going to get Mark this afternoon. He got along fine, so with proper rest when he gets home should be in good shape soon. As I told you before the adnoid wasn’t bad but tonsils were. He was a brave little boy thru it all and didn’t cry or act up like the little girl in the next bed did. Last night or rather evening at 5 – when

[page 2] I left he was trying to eat ice cream. I told him he would feel much better today and could eat.

I was very tired when I came home last night and still feel tired today but I think after another good night’s rest I’ll be rested up.

Mother has David out in the front yard in the sun. He is so full of pep – I wish I had some of it. He woke me at 6:30 this morning by pounding on the head of his bed. His two new teeth show up good now. I have to get him a new pr. of shoes – but his aren’t rationed. His ration tickets give us an extra in case someone should need it.

I promised Mark yesterday I would get him a new slack suit, so will have to go shopping before I go to the hospital.

[page 3] I wrote your Mother about his trip to the hospital, several days ago, so he rec’d a card from her today. She sent John a card when he was supposed to have measles & didn’t – but she didn’t send Mark a card when he had measles and didn’t like that very well, so she was careful to correct her error this time.

John is helping Zells out today. He is mowing their lawn. Mr. Zell has been [helping] farmers run tractors and with his own garden doesn’t have time to do his mowing. John will be kept pretty busy – our garden will have to be worked – our peas are blooming – spinach, lettuce & radish ready to eat – The potatoes are coming along fine – also the carrots & onions. We planted corn & beans Sat. & the beans are up.

[page 4] Mrs. James said she was trying to clean house and Bobby is there on his tricycle & he and Jimmy keep fighting so Mrs. J. isn’t getting much done but refereeing. I have to mix formula – Have the water boiled and bottles washed, so must go boil bottles & mix things. Lucile is going with me today and we are to leave at 1 P.M., so I will have to get busy. Oh yes – Dr. Holliday had a patient in Pediatrics yesterday – Had an emergency operation. I must quit writing & get busy with things around here.

Dear Mother,

Just finished re reading your air mail letter of May 8. That is two days later than you latest v-mail but the v-mail came 3-4 days ago. So I can’t tell which is faster. So I guess maybe if you wrote a few of each it would be better. U

You mentioned about the bank balance – I wouldn’t buy bonds at present with the balance that low, and if I can ever get my money I’ll send it to help. Not being paid since Jan. makes a

[page 2] a little balance on hand. Hope the boys’ colds are better and by this time the warm weather should help.

The second box you sent hasn’t arrived as yet but maybe it will be along. The chicken bones were still in the box but they weren’t in too good condition. All tough and stuck together.

And I didn’t write that v-mail letter like I said I was going to. I forgot whether I told you in yesterday’s letter – I got radish, lettuce, carrot and turnip seed from Mom yesterday.

It’s chow time will write more tomorrow

Dear Mother,

Just finished my morning chores and trying to settle down to writing.

Yesterday out of a clear sky from some source I got a letter from Dr. Joe Roberts and from his address I don’t believe he is very far from me but that is more or less a guess but I think I’m correct – I sure wish we could get together for a visit which is not impossible if my guessing is correct. The above seems to be

[page 2] a little mixed up but maybe you can get it straight.

Just by way of repeat I’ve sent two uniform check – one for 150 & one for 100 and later a check for 32.60 for you travel. All were in separate letters and mailed about one wk apart. When you get them give me the dope in several letters at intervals.

Went shelling again yesterday and had pretty good success but not as good as before but we didn’t stay as long. These are a little more stinky than

[page 3] those we had in Noumea because the live animal is there and has to be gotten out.

This being Sunday I’ll have to write the folks to keep up my weekly schedule. Then too I’ll have to drop Dr. J. a letter and compare notes but censorship is just as strict between here and there as it is between here and you.

Well, there are rumors of mail – hope they aren’t false.

Dear Mother,

It seems that something always interfers with letter writing but that is only natural when writing in the day time. At night time when one has time of his own it’s impossible to write so that is that.

Yesterday’s letter should come thru sooner than others because of the way it was mailed but if the fellow keeps them in his jacket you may never get it – You know how men are about letters.

After I had written yesterday I got a letter from the folks and

[page 2] one from Harry Storm. He is making a collection of A.P.O. addresses and asked Mother for one and since he then had my address he wrote. He made a guess of my location and missed also. Really it doesn’t make any difference as far as I can see whether people know where I am or not. If I thought it would help it would be different.

Last night several of the officers got together and we had a song fest. Wasn’t very good music but it was something. We do that every once in a while.

[page 3] Have had some stoppage but will try and go ahead even though there is still some conversation but maybe I can overcome the pitfalls.

I believe I have never told you of our one delicate dish – Hearts of Cocoanuts – It’s a brittle while substance that is in the heart of the tree. It’s something like celery when cut in strips. The only trouble is it takes a whole tree when that is served and that is the end of that tree. I think it is sewed in the states at a very high price.

I’m still reading the book

[page 4] written by Cecil Brown and I know have him in Australia. In another few hours of reading I’ll be able to get him back home.

Well, I’ve racked my brain for something more but it just won’t come.

Dear Daddy,

Sunday evening and just got the boys in. They were running around in circles – getting a sweat up and going a lot of damage to coupon 17 (shoes). It has been such a grand day they have been outside most of the time. Mayroses brought Mother up today and she came to stay this time. I got a chicken out of the locker and we had baked chicken for dinner. And I ground up the leftovers and made sandwiches for a supper. It is light so late now they weren’t in any hurry to start home so decided they could eat before starting out. Those chickens certainly are handy to have all ready to use,

[page 2] after all the rain yesterday, it came down in sheets & torrents last night. They started to come up on highway 63 but the water was so deep over the road they had to go back and cross over to 41, which made them a little late in arriving (12:30). Mark was about the only one to suffer – he thought he would starve before we could get dinner on. We sat out in the yard after dinner. Put David in his buggy so he got a good sunbath. John, Mark & the Zell girls decided to play croquet and Mr. Mayrose looked on.

Mark’s grades weren’t very good this last period and his exam grades were worse I going to try to get him to read a lot this summer and also work on arithmetic – He made C – on his arth. Exam. His Lennes pad [an arithmatic workbook] wasn’t nearly finished

[page 3] so I am going to get him to finish it. He can get his work if he takes time. I had him read to me last night and he does very well, but keeping him at it is what he needs. John is practicing on his recital piece. The recital is to be the 28^th of May.

You remember the girl we went to see out on Ocean View last summer whose husband is a Navy officer? Well she is in Sheldon with her parents. She has a baby girl eight weeks old and she was several weeks getting word to her husband of the baby’s arrival. Her name was Sipe – married John Hamm. Miss Smith keeps me posted on them. I didn’t ask about his location, I suppose it is not to be known.

Link and I were working on the flower bed that divides our yards Fri evening and both intended to resume our work

[page 4] Sat. but the rain kept us from doing so but I noticed he was out this evening finishing his side. If it doesn’t rain tonight or in the morning I want to get out tomorrow and finish our side. This reminds me of the seeds I sent you. I looked up to see when I mailed them and it was Apr 13 so you should have them by now. Your Mother wrote that she sent you several packs, so if you get them all should be able to farm in a big way –

The competition I have now is almost too much. Mark is sitting by me reading & John is practicing – Mark is going thru the patent leather hair phase – keeps his hair soaked all the time and is trying to get a wave trained – and what’s worse he uses brilliantine on it. That is hard on the pillow slip – had to soak the last one I took off to get the oil out. Well I give up for this time and will try to finish tomorrow when I hope I can find it a little more quiet here.

Dear Daddy –

As Mark would say – I hit the jackpot this a.m. – 4 letters Apr 16 – 19 & 2 dated the 20^th – The box with the chicken bones – I sent those in the original tin box so they would be intact when you received them. You should get another box soon because I sent one a few days after sending the chicken bones. There is a 5 lb limit so had to divide the original box I packed.

Our weather has changed rather drastically. Wed. it was hot and windy, Thurs it began to cloud up then started to rain – rained most of Fri and today is still wet and raining and pretty cool, so it is just as well we haven’t taken the storm windows down yet. All three boys have colds, but I think it is due to weather conditions. John didn’t take measles after all, tho I had to keep him home from school Wed – Thurs & Fri. He didn’t go to take his music lesson today either.

[page 2] Some time later – heard a special radio weather broadcast – frost is predicted – as cool as it is now it wouldn’t surprise me. It seems to be clearing off now and if it does by night time I am sure it will be cold enough to freeze. Tomorrow is Mother’s Day – I got your letter mentioning it – came right when it should. I told J. & M. not to spend anything for me for Easter & Mother’s Day and I would just add that much to a set of dishes. Not expensive ones – but you know how dishes go around here and it’s about time for a new set. I sent your Mother a pr of hose & a hanky & card. I got myself a pr of shoes and after walking around in them decided they weren’t comfortable for walking (what I bought them for) so Mother tried them on and said she could wear them – I gave them to her so I told her that was her Mother’s Day gift.

In re-reading the letters that came today. The v-mail hasn’t come yet and I have been sending v-mail & air mail both – The past week I have alternated – The reason I stopped sending air mail

[page 3] when I did – I was told they wouldn’t go by air at all – but will try again and you can let me know which does the best. I’ll keep sending v-m every other day & air mail on the alternate day.

Mark is taking 4-H this summer – Gardening & baking – imagine our Mark wanting to bake – I helped him stir up a syrup cake this morning. He really enjoys it. What I think he likes most is licking the bowls and then eating the cake when it’s baked.

When I sent your Christmas box I didn’t have room to pack the box of chicken bones – and that was the reason I took them out the tin and wrapped them in a wax paper bag – I told Nick & Dorothy what happened to them – Nick was rather sarcastic about “leave it to a woman to do something like that” – So when I got your letter this morning in which you mentioned the bones I presumed they weren’t in the tin box I sent them in – so I called D. and told her to tell Nick his sarcasm was unnecessary.

Nick took one exam for a commission in the Navy but he didn’t go back for

[page 4] a final – and I doubt if he does. John got a letter from Dwane written on their way to see Kenneth at Camp Robinson in Ark. I suppose Mom wrote you that K. is in Medical Div.

I was to go to T.H. today to get Mother but thought maybe I had better call her to be ready – well when I called she said she thought she would stay another week then Mayroses would bring her up – so that saves me the trip down and I don’t care. I wasn’t anticipating the trip. I want to go to Laf. Wed. to the Hospital Day Ceremony honoring the Doctors in Service.

As I have told you in previous letters, I haven’t bought any bonds this year but have been waiting for the uniform money to come thru. By the time I got all the first of the year bills paid and bought the 6- 50 bonds I haven’t much of a balance – at present it will be under $100 when I get everything pd – Just wrote a ck for $44 for coal, etc. In spite of all the ceiling – the price of food is much higher and it costs just to keep the grocery bills paid. David is singing – about time for him to eat – and – he has a coming appetite today, in spite of a slight cold.

Dear Daddy – No letters the past two days but had yours up to Apr 15 Mon & Tues this week (This is Thurs). It is much warmer here but the wind has been acting like March. It looks like rain any time now. I have some pansies to set out if the rain doesn’t come before I get out – stopped to set the “little” plants out – and just in time before it rained. David seems to be a little out of sorts – I think it is because I can’t take him out – had him outside nearly all afternoon yesterday. He has a new toy – it is called Cradle-Gym and it is a baby trapeze – it fastens across the bed and has several things on it. He likes it very much – tries to pull himself up on it but hasn’t quite made the grade yet. John is still home today but is feeling quite god, but if he has three day measles he won’t break out till tomorrow, so have to keep him home just in vase. He has a head ache and I think he needs his glasses changed but I don’t want to take him to Dr. Ade until I find out whether or not he has aforesaid measles. I sent your Mother a gift for Mother’s day today – am sending my mother a card – May get down there to get her before Sunday. John has the ballgame from Chicago turned on – there is a lot of noise due to the rainy weather – The Cardinals & Cubs are playing – Cubs won yesterday. Just had a hard rain and hail. It is time for Mark to be home from school – hope he didn’t get wet. He never takes his slicker unless I tell him too and he got away without it at noon. Our hero just arrived – he stopped in the P.O. while it rained so hard so all he has is wet shoes and I made him take them off. Strawberries are on the market now, but .39¢ a box and that is too much, I think.

Dear Mother,

This is a little late but I’m enclosing a mother’s day greeting to be given you by the boys. It’s a little beating around the bush for me to send to you for the boys to give you – I also got one for mom and put it in her Sunday letter.

While I’m at it I’m now wishing you a happy wedding anniversary which comes as I recal about 3 wks from tomorrow.

I’ve been out this morning doing some running around and it makes one tired riding in the truck like vehicles over roads that aren’t to smooth.

They are building a tent for the chaplin so maybe we won’t spoil him in the next few days. He had his church service yesterday morning so didn’t have to go out last night.

Well, I’ll be writing tomorrow

Dear Mother,

Sunday morning and up and going. This as you know is my day to write home and I’ll do so when this is finished. My last letter to them was only wed. because of the mix-up.

Yesterday a chaplin moved into our tent and I’m not sure who will be converted us or him. He seems to be a very swell fellow and a Catholic. He’ll probably want a tent of his own when we can get around to it.

The officer who received the shrimp broke down and opened two cans yesterday P.M. and we got some catsup to dunk them in and were they good. You’d be surprised at the amount of happiness an sult can receive from a can of sardines shrimp etc. The last you wrote you sent have not arrived. This fellow that got them yest said his wife had to almost bribe the store keeper to get what she sent.

We have the usual conversation going on in the tent and really this should be censored for female reading but I’ll try not to inject any of the words and phrases that are going rampant. Really we’re not a bad lot but we have to have our little fun now and then.

There is a little lull in the conversation and maybe I can get an inspiration but I’m a little afraid things have started again and I’m at the end of my ropes.

Dear Mother,

I’m starting this letter before breakfast. Just happened to be up a little early and time on hand. The talked of furniture is finished and I’m using it as a writing table at present – chow time

It is now 24 hours later hence your letter of 26^th now beginning. Things came up that I just couldn’t get to writing again yesterday and I really feel badly but it just couldn’t be helped.

[page 2] I didn’t even have a chance to get my weekly letter out to the folk. It of course being Easter Sunday.

We had fresh meat yesterday and ice cream. I mean those were the unusual things and of course we enjoyed them very much.

I heard indirectly from Dr. P. & W. and everything back there seems to be as tough as it used to be. We just can’ help but feel sorry for them and

It is now chow time again I had better get this thing wound up and into the mail before it lays for another day.
