A Heavy Frost This Morning (Gladys)

1943-01-28Letter transcription:

Dear Daddy – Another bright sunny day, but cold. There was a heavy frost this morning. It seems odd not to have snow on the ground after having so much all winter. We have all had our pictures taken and John and I had to have a second made. I have the proofs of the ones we didn’t like – John said we should send them to you and tell you not to let this happen to you. They were pretty bad but the others were good. Will try to send them out next week – they aren’t ready yet. We went to Sheldon yesterday and got some meat. It was a nice day to drive. I think it is a little cold to take the baby out in a buggy but the car is warm. Don’t think I am trying to make a sissy out of him but am of the opinion too cold air won’t do him any good. Hope to make up for this staying in, in the spring. I haven’t seen the Johnson baby yet but hope to this week. My sinus condition is better. I didn’t want to go around a new baby with a drippy nose but I am past that stage now. Just some drainage once in a while and that drop into my throat. Mark had a little cold and I gave him the oral vaccine as you directed. Kept him home from school one day. His teacher said the room was cold Monday (due to a north wind) – that she got a cold from it herself. He is as full of pep as ever. John and Mark just came home for lunch – both very hungry and clamoring for food. David woke up and I had to take him up to see if he needed anything.

The Necklace Broke (Gladys)

Dear Daddy-Yours of 1-17 Rec’d today. We are having sunshine today – there was a heavy frost last nite. It isn’t as cold as yesterday – but still cold enough to keep the stoker busy – Mr. Monroe oil it yesterday and aired the radiators. My sinus seems some better today – and I quit doing anything about it – it kept draining whether I had it washed out or not so thought I would quit doing anything – Maybe that doesn’t make sense but having it washed out every other day didn’t seem to help any. There is some drainage today but lots less. I am figuring up taxes. Have to pay gross this week. Agnes is going to write you and explain in detail about ’41 Federal. I am going to give her the figures for ’42 and she will file a report. Now please quit worrying about the taxes – we will take care of things “OK.” David is asleep. He took his pablum without a fight this AM. As soon as we get all our photographs finished will send you another box and put the pictures in the box. I believe you will get it that way as soon as by letter. The reason you haven’t been getting letters is due to shipping space shortage. Maybe the V-mail will be speedier. The necklace broke but I think I’ll have Mr. Reinard restring it. I had my picture taken and then the string broke. The picture didn’t turn out very good and I had it taken again but couldn’t wear the necklace.

One of Those Old Fashion Winters (Gladys)

1943-01-26Letter transcription:

MRS. R.S. YEGERLEHNER

Dear Daddy – Clear and cold today. This must be one of those old fashion winters people talk about. Mr. Monroe is here this morning checking the furnace oiled and aired. He says everything is fine. I am on a club committee this afternoon. I would rather stay in since it is so cold but maybe it will do me more good to get away from home for a little while. I will wear my new coat and keep warm. I haven’t gone much this winter and need to get away from the house now & then. Arleen went to Laf. on the bus Sat. and when she told me I told her to let me know next time and I would take her so we may go one day this week. I don’t mind driving now because the traffic is slowed down and not much of it. There are hugh [huge] signs all along that say “Government orders drive only 35 per.” The ones I have noticed that do not keep to that are mostly out of state license. I hear David grunting and it is time for his bath – and pablum – the latter he doesn’t care much for but “mama” pokes it down him just the same. He does better than at first, however if he doesn’t get it he is hungry so has to have it. No letter today but had 3 yesterday (Jan 13-14-15). The J.A.M.A. is still coming – will talk to Dr. M. about your Co. dues. Dr M. sent you a box of goodies.

4 months old (Gladys)

1943-01-23Letter transcription:

Dear Daddy – Today David is 4 months old and getting to be quite a personality. I sent you a snapshot in a letter yesterday of both of us. I haven’t weighed him yet today but yesterday he weighed 13-12. This being Sat. morning we aren’t moving very fast. Mark is eating breakfast and John is practicing for his music lesson at 11 a.m. – David is in the den and dropped off to sleep during the piano practice. It is foggy this a.m. and a little on the dismal side. The snow and ice are about gone – enough left to look not so pretty. Every time it gets like this we have another snow then it is good to look at again. There was a fire on 41 last night. It looked like a barn or shed on the place where Dawson’s live. No letters this a.m. but have had 7 so far this week so can’t complain. The boys still find cutting our own bread a novelty. Mark just cut a slice and ate it and is on another – Maybe it will get him to eat more. He still eats like he did – just by “spurts,” but he is as peppy as ever. I suppose in time he will eat more. John had a tooth trying to push out through the gum and had to have the old one pulled so the new one could come in straight – Just came back from the photographer – Will let you know the results later.

From the baby book:
January 23 – 1943 – A brand new year and David is now 4 months old and weighs 13 lbs 12 oz and measures 24 ½ “ long – Now takes vegetable soup in addition to formula, pablum and cod liver oil. Rolls over – gets his legs on the outside of his bed. Holds toys and tries to put everything in his mouth. Found toes at 4 ½ months. Started sleeping in bed Jan. 3 – Too long for basket – hands fly around so much he hits the sides of basket.

A new experience (Gladys)

Dear Daddy – Your letter of Jan 9 came today after the 10th – which I rec’d Tues. I won’t try sending the eggs or green stuff. The only reason I sent the coke was because I had good packing, but that was too good to pass by. Should have put in some dry ice. There isn’t any school again today but it is warmer 20°. There is still ice under the snow on our street but the other streets in town are better and the highways are clean. Mark is working with his Christmas tools this A.M. John is just loafing. I wish they could go back to school but probably won’t this week. David is asleep – after taking 5 oz milk & 3 tbsp pablum he was too drowsy to have a good burp. Weighed 13-7 this A.M. The boys are getting a new experience – we have to slice our bread now and they think that something. Both tried and you can imagine what the slices looked like then Mother sliced for them and they thought she was very good. I told you before about creamery butter being so high 50¢ per – so we use oleo. There seems to be a canned milk shortage so I have been trying to get a little surplus because I don’t want to run out. They say not to do that. I wouldn’t for the rest of us but have to think of the baby’s welfare. I couldn’t get carnation so got Pet. The labels read the same. I hear D. so he must be waking up

Dear Daddy – I am writing 2 of these today. They told me at the P.O. I am allowed 3 a day and I felt like writing more today than one holds. In case you didn’t get the other it is 10 below today. Blizzard yesterday and no school. I am quoting again figures I sent several times you asked for. To May 31 – #3120.45 – June 260.25 July 253.28 Aug 33.75 – total 3667.73. Agnes and I will get all the tax business taken care of so don’t worry about it. The uniform money hasn’t come yet. The last box you mentioned hasn’t either. Some of your Rotary friends asked if all you had to do was make a necklace – I told them you do that on Monday evening since you can’t attend Rotary. No letters today but had 5 Mon & 1 Tues. If you get all my previous letters hope you don’t worry about our colds. They boys are all over theirs and as full of pep as ever. The last time John started to sneeze I gave him the oral vaccine as you instructed – six in one day and it worked – cold all gone. I still have a sinus condition but I am able to be up – tho I am not trying to do anything unnecessary – Mother is here and takes care of the kitchen work. David is now taking 13 oz. carnation 16 oz water – 2 ½ tbsp Dextri-Maltose – 1 egg yolk – in formula – 3 tbsp pablum. He has now doubled his weight – at 3 mo 3 wks – is good. Holds on to things now and responds to attention. Took some more pictures today – Will send them if they are good. Will write a real letter next time – so I can ramble more.

Dear Daddy – Another blizzard and no school today – Probably hard for you to believe we are having such weather. If you get all my letters maybe you will get a fair idea what it is like here. I wish you could see the way the snow is drifted across the front yard today – It looks like rock formation. The boys are playing pick-up stick this A.M. David is asleep. Just had both pablum & milk. Weighted 13-6 this morning. He is holding things now. John calls him the “personality babe” Had a wire from Glen that they have a baby boy named him James L. – They are living in Winnemucca Nev. now. Had one letter this A.M. – Yours of Jan 11 – I am anxious to see the new necklace – The lace box you mentioned hasn’t come yet – Neither has the uniform money. I am taking sulfadiozine for my sinus infection. Have been taking treatments but the thing won’t clear up with spraying & irrigation. Never had such a time with it. The baby’s cold hangs on too and I think it’s because of my condition. However he hasn’t felt bad – and I do hope he doesn’t. Mother is knitting him a pr of bootees. Oh for spring and warm weather again.

Tried to get new overshoes today (Gladys)

Dear Daddy – Monday and more snow. There is a thick coating of ice under the snow so it makes walking as bad as driving. I took Mark to school so he wouldn’t get snow all over him – being sick last week from exposure I am going to keep him in pretty close for a while. – Have been to Music Club since writing the first – It was at the M. Church. The first time I have been any place (socially) since in Dec. I still am having sinus trouble but I thought it would lift my morale to go out again. Have 5 letters today – Jan 5 to 9 – The uniform money has not come yet. I will try this week to get some tax figures made. I am going to see Agnes and she will help me. I sent you the figures you asked for in three previous letters. Maybe you will get them some day. I haven’t bought the new dresses yet, but will wait now until spring – since I have a new coat & hat. I tried to get Mark some new overshoes today but couldn’t. He is wearing rubbers but we are having too much snow for low cuts. He wore a hole in the high ones he had. John is wearing your old zippers. All this snow should be good for the grass etc. Will try and write a real letter tonight.

Dear Daddy, everything is just fine. But we have all been sick. Today I was playing with Davie and he hit me in the nose, as hard as he could. It was so funny that I laid down on the floor and laughed till I cried. In my grades at school I made A+ In spelling, A+ A+ A+ I band C+ in Arithmetic, b+ in English. That is all I can think of

Our street was a sheet of ice (Gladys)

1943-01-17Letter transcription:

MRS RS YEGERLEHNER

Dear Daddy – Sunday evening and the family in bed except me and waiting for D. to take his 10 PM before I turn in. Mayrose’s brought Mother up today. The weather was fair for the trip and it is snowing some this evening and when the boys came home from Youth Fellowship said was so slick they couldn’t stay on their feet. I noticed cars going very slow. Our street was a sheet of ice yesterday. The ice is so thick some children skate on it going to and from the pond. I hope it is better by morning as I need to go to town and I don’t want to walk. Since having this sinus trouble I try not to go out in the cold air any more than necessary. It is better this evening. Should clear up soon now. I hope it doesn’t continue indefinitely. John and Mark are both up and going again but John still has a little stiff neck. He was able to take care of the furnace today. Mark is as lively as ever. They have the electric train hooked up in our bedroom and have been playing with it this week-end. I suppose they will leave it there until I get tired walking around it. Mark has been trying to think up some of the things David will get into when he begins to get around. John says he isn’t going to worry about such things. Thanks for the letter about your trip and I might add, you do a good job telling things.
