Last day for regular air mail (Gladys)

Letter transcription:

Dear Daddy –

Today is the last day for regular air mail to men overseas, so after this I will probably use mostly V-mail. However at the rate you have received my letters I don’t believe they went by air. I will write a few regular & the rest V-mail. Will have to use regular for pictures. It was announced over the radio that the restriction to send boxes out is for Army & does not apply to Navy or Marine.

We are having more “weather.” It began to snow then sleeted a while now it is clear but we have more snow to shovel.

Mark went back to school today but John is still lying around with stiff neck. He has missed two days of school. He seems to feel well otherwise.

[page 2]Dorothy White called this morning and wanted to know if Dr. M. could borrow your microscope. She came out and got it. Dr. M. is buying a new one and has turned his old one in and is temporarily out of one. She said Dr. sent you a box and was wondering if you would get it. I told her now that the Christmas mail is delivered I thought you would get it.

Dorothy wanted me to ask you what it was you used to give Nick when he had the pain in his elbows, etc. You told him it was caused from going out in the cold from the hot kitchen. It was a white tablet. If you can remember let me know and I’ll tell them. So far the Johnson baby has been doing some night crying. Of course coming home in a week doesn’t help matters.

[page 3] I suppose they will get the little fellow regulated after a while. They are a little late with their child experience. We had ours before we had time to settle into a “groove.” Of course David has been good and staying in the hospital 2 weeks I think helped. He seemed to know when to sleep. I see Link is driving their car around with Irene & Jimmy on a sled in back. Bobby Funk has his sled out too. We have had plenty of sledding & skating weather. We just get rid of one snow when another one comes along. I suppose this kind of weather will last till spring since it started at Thanksgiving. I think Thanksgiving was the last time I hung clothes out in the yard. Probably will be some time before I do again.

It is about time for D. to have a bottle & the rest of us to eat too.

Love
Mother

P.S. These letters the boys wrote somehow didn’t get mailed when written.

Will try this again (Gladys)

Dear Daddy –

Will try this again. The boys have been using V-mail and I used just air mail but since you asked for this, here ‘tis. We are all better today. Mark has to stay in bed but he has only a slight temperature 4 points in the red. I told him if he kept quiet this afternoon he could get up in the morning. John will be glad of that because he has been waiting on him and doing his work and Mark’s too. David is on his bath table but isn’t liking it too well. He usually likes to lie and kick, but I just put him back in his bed and now he is ‘singing.’ The way he moves when he is awake makes me think of perpetual motion. I don’t know how cold it is today but the storm windows on the south upstairs were frosted over. I noticed Zell’s south windows were frosted too. The J.A.M.A. came today. Do you want that renewed? I asked you once or twice before but no answer. Got a letter from Uncle Wes this A.M. He said he sent you some maps and was sending an atlas. Lucile Johnson came home from the hospital today – Jimmy Ed is a week old but they are so crowded over there (Watseka). I stayed just a week longer than she did. I sent Jimmy Ed a gift and wrote her a letter and she answered. Said she thought she had better write letters before she comes home. Catty Wilson is going to stay with them for a while. At one week J.E. has gained 5 oz. and at that rate he will soon be a heavy weight. My right sinus is OK but there is some infection in the left but it keeps draining all the time, so maybe it will soon get cleared up.

You aren’t the “flighty” type (Gladys)

Letter transcription:

Kentland Ind
Jan 11 – 1943

Dear Daddy –

Rec’d your Jan 1, 2 & 3 letters this morning. You had my letters up to Dec 12 and I had told you about Mark being sick – well this seems to be a vicious circle – after Mark had his round, John got the bug and then I had it and still struggling with my sinus but my throat seems well now. It did keep bothering me but seems fine now. Well to get back to the circle, Mark got wet thru and came in and I told him to go upstairs and take a warm bath & put on dry clothes. Of course he protested on the both so I said well get dry clothes on which I thought he did – That was supper time – and I didn’t know he had just put on dry pants until after started to run a temperature. He wore his wet underwear all evening then went to school next day and played out in the snow – even got his face washed in snow twice I learned later so no wonder he got sick but he is much better now. As soon as I discovered he had fever I started him on sulfa and called Dr. Cole & he said give him a whole tablet of sulfadiozine every 3 hrs. I am giving one every 4 hrs today because his temp is down and he is getting lively

[page 2] He was around the baby before I knew he was feeling bad and now the baby is coughing of course it is hard to say how the baby got his since I have been having so much throat & sinus trouble. However, I keep in close touch with Dr. C. and he told me to give David ¼ sulfadiozine every 4 hrs. He has just a slight temperature. He seems to feel fine and takes his regular feedings. Weighed 13-3 this A.M. – which shows a 10 oz gain since last Monday. Now please don’t worry about us because if anything serious should develop I would go directly to St. E. but Mark’s temp is receding and since I started to write this I stopped to feed David and had to change him and took his temp. which was 99 4/5 rectally – which you know isn’t much. Right now he is trying to get his whole fist in his mouth and is very mad because he can’t. He acts very much like he is trying to cut teeth but 3 ½ mo is a little early – – –

Just had callers – Mrs. Roberts & two boys were here.  She had come over with someone else and stopped in to say hello. She had some pictures of Joe. He has shaved off his mustache and was not wearing his glasses. He looked quite

[page 3] different. He had a little boy in the pictures with him that looks very much like their smallest boy, John. He was in bathing trunks so evidently had been in swimming, but if he has written you probably has told you what he does. In one of his letters he told Mrs. R. his picture might be in the papers. The Army & Navy Officers Club was having a dance and he was holding the mistletoe over a couple and a picture was taken of the scene. Mrs. R. said she would watch all the papers for said picture. The aforementioned club may not be current but he was attending a social function around Christmas time.

Clara M. is here today helping. I have been having her come once a week to do ironing, etc., and since this week-end was such a strenuous one I was glad I had told her to come today. She washed, ironed and is now cleaning the living room. I want to stay away from any dust with this sinus condition. It has been draining all day but I don’t want to aggravate it. Of all times to get a sinus condition – oh well, I’ll get rid of the bug – I “betcha.”

After the snow, wind, drifting, haze, and everything Sat & Sun, the sun is shining today and that always makes a person feel better. The snow wasn’t very deep this time and is melting

[page 4] around the edges. There isn’t any haze today so we can see out again. I believe this is the “wintryst” winter we have had – well in so many years I can’t remember how far back. You know I never cared for winter weather but this is 1/3 of Jan. gone and Feb is a short month, then Mar. – so in a few short weeks spring will be here again and we will forget all about this weather and cold “bugs.” I hope I can manage to work in the yard this spring. I want to have flowers in front of the shrubbery like last year. I think I can get some full grown Spirea. Clara says if it is on her place – (she isn’t sure – may be on Mrs. Perry’s – the property line doesn’t seem definite) I can have it – she wants it taken away. So we may have some full grown shrubs in our back yard this spring.

I gave you all the figures you asked for in three previous letters. I will talk to Agnes and we will take care of the ’41 Federal, also figure up the ’42 and give you the amt that will have to be paid after deductions, etc. I hope this letter hasn’t been too much on the drippy side but I think you want to know how things are and as I said before if anything serious should develop you know I would

[page 5] get to St. E. immediately, but since you aren’t the “flighty” type I think you would rather know our little up & downs. As Gildersleeve says – “this is one of my bad days” – seems this has been one of our bad times but we are all feeling better today and hope by tomorrow everyone will be so-so again. Even with a temp. it has been a job keeping Mark in bed. John was very much “put out” with Mark. He said it was unnecessary for him to get sick – knowing how it all came around. I said “Poor Mark is in the dog house even when he is sick.” However John’s comment didn’t disturb our Mark.

John got his report card today. He can write you a V-mail & give you the results. He is practicing on the sax now. He is getting better all the time but he likes it and you know when he likes to do a thing that means everything.

David is chewing on his hands again and looking at a toy I fixed on his basket. He is the squirmiest little fellow – just turns & twists around most of the time when he is awake. Gets plenty of exercise. Will try and get those pictures taken and sent out as soon as I can stick my nose out in the air again.

Mother

Things to write about are few and far between (Roscoe)

Letter transcription:

Jan 5, 1942 [1943]
Lt (JG) Yegerlehner
Receiving Station
U.S. Naval Advanced Base
Noumea New Caledonia
c/o Fleet P.O.
San Francisco Calif.

Dear Mother,

This is one time I didn’t forget to put the whole address at the top. It’s almost a letter in itself to put that much on and really it’s supposed to be on every page. That’s one reason why V-mail is harder – Two addressees on one page – but write V-mail because it will be faster this way I think. No mail today as yet. It’s very discusting [disgusting] but will just have to get used to waiting. Dec. 12 was the last letter from home.

Our show last night was “The Fleet’s In.” Was a pretty funny show and was really what the boys like and need. It gives them a chance to “whoop and holler” and mothering to restrain them. That show has been out some time, as well as most of ours here have been, but

[page 2] that doesn’t matter as far as I’m concerned because they are all new to me and but some fellows have seen the same show 2-3 times but and they still go.

I did some laundry again today. It was the first for some time – sent some out and had an enlisted man do some but it takes so long when they it is sent out and I didn’t get all my things back when the enlisted man did it. So I guess the best thing to do is – do it yourself. I don’t mind the washing but I don’t like ironing – we don’t have a regular board and a flat table or desk top isn’t so good.

When I get home I’ll have to reform in lots of ways or you’ll find me out in the back washing and another thing I’ve gotten very bad at is not cleaning up my plate at meal times. Just today we had Lamb – potatoes, corn and bean & carrot

[page 3]salad. All I ate was the lamb and the potatoes. And I don’t suppose I’ve eaten more than one doz slices of bread since leaving the U.S.A. The bread on ship was kept in the ice box frozen and none no fresh on the whole trip so that about turned me against the stuff. Ours looks good here but our meals are so top heavy with carbohydrates that I just pass it by.

This P.M. breeze has almost turned into a gale again this P.M. My laundry is whipped a lot but it’s been out about 2 hours and still not dry. The atmosphere here must be damper than at home. We have no clothes pins so have to tie them on with string and that takes time. It seems that I’ve said many of the things before that I said in this letter so please excuse it’s just because things to write about are few and far between.

[page 4] Haven’t taken any pictures yet because cameras are supposed to be taboo in most instances so I’ve kept this one pretty well hidden.

Today is pay day but there won’t be any to send home. I’ll let it pile up some and send it later. You had better get yours out or it will seem so much a part of the bank account that it will be hard to pry it loose. If you don’t want to buy your coat put it in bonds. I believe that is a little better interest than saving. Or better still split it. Or maybe you’ll have to use it to keep the wolf from the door. Do as you think best.

All for now love
Daddy

P.S. – no mail so no more to add.

Missing letters (Roscoe)

Letter transcription:

Nov. 30, 1942

Dear Mother,

Another Monday almost gone and it’s about the same as usual other than I got 4 letters one from each of the older boys and 2 from you. These today were all dated Nov. The latest being either the 15th or 16th the other the 8th. V-mail is now about one week behind the ordinary air mail. You or the boys or both might send a V-mail now and then because they’re not bad. So far I’ve saved all my letters or rather yours – all but those first few, and I’ll give you the dates of which I have as yet not received mail. All in Aug I’ve received not received in Sept. 9, 16, 17, 18, 21, 22, 23, 24, 28 – Oct. 1-10-22-26-29-30-31 – Nov. 5, 6, 7, 14. Sundays of course I didn’t expect any mail so I crossed those dates off. I got your pictures. The one of the boys and you. All that you have sent. When the Christmas rush is over I wish you would get a picture taken say about 4 in square of yourself and send it. Something about the size of the one I had in the office. It would be nice to have but not too large to handle.

The watch situation is Ok. If I need one I’ll send but nothing expensive. Many have sent good watches home and have inexpensive ones sent out. Mine is doing fine so I don’t have to think of that at present at least.

I suppose we will have another show tonight but as usual we don’t know what it will be. Guess don’t make any difference.

We are getting an extension on our living quarters today so have been bothered with lots of flies, but

[page 2] it is about closed up now.

Still don’t have any of the packages you talked about. Those seem to be very slow in coming in but maybe it hasn’t been long enough yet. I guess I’ll have to send the pictures on to Lentz. Too bad they couldn’t get here before he left.

I want to write to Uncle Wes but I’m not sure of his address guess it would come back. I keep thinking his letters will come but you will note that during the time when he wrote the mail wasn’t coming. Again about that tax. I believe the last payment was to be Jan. 1. Maybe you can make them both at that time. I know expenses are heavy around about that time but that was last year’s tax. I’m afraid they will come and get me and put me in jail. What do you think? I really believe there would be a penalty on last years. Well, I’ve said all that before etc.

You can tell Mark his letters are coming along and I do really appreciate them. And if they write at different times my chances of receiving mail more often will be increased. They don’t need to wait for me to write each time for often it’s all I can do to get one letter per day written and too I have several others to write to.

Well, I’ll try to add more later but in case I forget –

Solong

Love Daddy

P.S. Got another V-mail from you dated Nov. 9 and you said you had sent stamps – I haven’t received them nor the commission.

The first package arrives (Roscoe)

Letter transcription:

Nov. 28, 1942

Dear Mother,

I’m hanging around on duty tonite and maybe will have time to write a letter all at once – went to a baseball game this P.M. between the army and navy so have to hang around. The Navy won.

You can tell Mark I got a letter from him today Nov. 8 and was glad to get it. If the boys keep writing at different times it will increase my chances of getting mail. The last latest mail I have received from you was Nov 2 and that was several days ago. So there is lots yet to be gotten. In fact I have never received those that were written when David arrived.

I received a Christmas birthday box from Mom today. She had some stick candy and some various other kinds and the whole mess was sticky. This hot damp weather seems to simply melt candy but it’s pretty good. She also sent some butterscotch rolls and 5-6 packages of chewing gum and one box of menthol cough drops. C. J. Easley included 2 Indianapolis Stars and a package of V-mail envelopes. Do you have to pay for those things? We have plenty of

[page 2] those can get all we want at the P.O. Maybe I can use them – I’ll write him and thank him for them. The box was open at one corner and if the candy hadn’t been sticky one sack would have leaked out. I sorta shudder to think what the candy will be like you sent because I believe you said it was a little soft. And boxes must be tied very good because the best of them look bad when they arrive.

I’m rooming with two dentists and our quarters are in back of the dental office. And I’m writing at a desk in the back of their office and just now one of them is in the process of pulling a fellow’s tooth and I think it broke off and he is scraping it out from the sound of things. Sorta makes my teeth feel on edge to hear that scrape. I ran the above all together with ands because he was scraping pretty fast.

A Lt. Commd that used to be our big boss was promoted to Commander today and he treated the officers to cold beer at evening chow. It went pretty good the weather being as hot as it was today. As long as there is a breeze and one can find shade it’s OK.

[page 3] but just get in the sun without the breeze and it is hot.

I’ll have to write C.J. and Mom tomorrow and thank them for the package and hope to get yours in the next few days. I believe she sent hers before you did. I’m really more interested as much in packages as letters because news from home are most important but don’t mistake me I appreciate the packages also.

Fred got a package yesterday and carried it all around showing it to everyone and he also asks you to listen to parts of his letters etc. I don’t care anything about those things and I don’t read any of mine to him. He is a fine fellow to get along with but he does have peculiar ideas. He is an only child so I suppose he gets some of his peculiarities from that.

I’ll add a line in the A.M.

A case of cold beer (Roscoe)

Destry Rides Again is a movie staring Jimmie Stewart and Marlene Dietrich. The movie has a rather infamous fight scene between Marlene Dietrich and Una Merkel and Jimmie Stewart. Although I have never seen the movie, here’s a clip of the big fight from the movie.

Letter transcription:

Nov. 27, 1942

Dear Mother,

The dates on my letters are a little confusing since I write in the P.M. The letter goes thru the censorship routine the next morning and to the P.O. about noon then to the main P.O. in the P.M. and then leave the next day so you see a letter is about 3 days off old before it really leaves the island but I guess that doesn’t make much difference in the long run because of the length of time it takes them to get there. I never seal the envelope until it is ready for censorship so if anything important comes up I can add it and that takes off one day. There is no point to the above whatever only just telling you the procedure.

I’ve been very lazy in the letter writing business the past few days. It seemed that when I wanted to write there was something else that had to be done and when I had time I wasn’t in the mood. The nightly shows cut into my writing schedule but they are pretty good past time. Last night’s show was a little odd. I guess. The name “Destry Rides Again.” Don’t know what the one is tonite we always have pretty good house even if the title isn’t

[page 2] known ahead. Most everyone goes even if they have seen it before. And many persons who go to the movies often have seen them, but as for me they will have to hunt pretty hard if they find one I have seen, as you are well aware.

Our living quarters are pretty good now. We – Three of us – have a space 12 feet by 16 feet. Have Iron bunks with springs. And electric lights. I’ve told you that before but I’m so pleased. We were up last night until 11:00 P.M. We seem to be in a part of the outfit where lights out don’t affect. So we can read write etc. And too the mosquitoes aren’t so bad but we still use our nets at night because the little bugs slip in some way.

Today outside the heat is very oppressive and the sun really burns. Inside the hut it is rather comfortable and there is a slight breeze, but standing perfectly still in the sun is almost unbearable.

So far today I received a copy of the Newton County Enterprise dated Oct. 22 and two V-mail letters one from you and one from John – Yours was dated Nov. 5 and John’s Nov. 3. That’s two V-mails from John and none from Mark. The one I got from John on Nov. 1 sounded more like Mark but it had John’s name.

I haven’t written Bart yet about the paper

[page 3] but I intend to in the very near future and I also intend to write Boonie again. I got his letter 3 days ago but wasn’t in the mood to write and have been a little busy what with moving etc.

Was interrupted for a time – Have just been to the P.O. but no mail or packages. I brought two packages for another Dr. but none for myself. Guess mine will be along sooner or later. It is now 1700 and still the sun is very hot. It’s supposed to be the dead of summer or very near it and by 1915 it is dark enough to start the movies so that proves the period of twilight is shorter here than there because it still very light there at 1915 in the Eve. As I remember it.

Just got a case of cold beer and is it good. Most of the time it is warm but once in a while we are able to get a cold one. Our beer supply is running low and I’ll be sorta glad because it put on too much weight.

Well, I’ll save the rest of the space until morning. It isn’t morning yet but the show was short. The name “Gold Rush Mazie”. It was about as good as it sounds. I’ll add more in the morning.

Nothing new. Very warm at 7:30 A.M. – will start another letter today

Love Daddy

November 18, 1942 (Roscoe)

Letter transcription:

Nov. 18, 1942

Dear Mother,

I’m writing before chow because we have work to do afterwards and there is a movie here tonite and of course will have to go. Not have to but we might want to although I’m not too much excited about them.

Now that you know our location I suppose you will be using maps in getting the location etc. As I’ve said before it’s a more or less modernized town but the standard of living doesn’t seem as high as ours. Of course, we don’t have any of the conveniences that they have in town. There are plenty of coconut trees here and there are always green ones on them but I’ve never found a ripe one only in the stores. In our particular area there are no coconut trees but we can see plenty not more than a half mile away in several directions. The nuts are supposed to be good from tiny green ones up to the large ripe ones.

[page 2] There are also supposed to be some bananas growing here but I haven’t been far enough away to see them as yet.

I suppose the boys will get their maps and look the situation over again. I finally got a map of the south west but would still like one of Europe as well as any you might send.

It’s hard to believe this is Nov. since it is so warm and things are so different than from the States. In this type climate the seasons seem so much alike. That is so far only the rain is different and we haven’t had any of that for so long. The dust is very thick on my stand beside the bed. And our our table in the mess tent/hall seems like sand paper when one rubs his hand over it. So maybe all that stuff that looks like pepper in the food isn’t.

[page 3] No mail again today and our news is mostly local. The radio news and newspapers are quite some behind times so we only know our local stuff and it isn’t so bad. There just hasn’t been any mail come in with the exception of a few V-mail letters. Those are old but one of my tent mate got one today dated Nov. 2, which wasn’t so bad, but regular air mail came in about 4-5 days ago  addressed dated Nov. 2.

I’ll save the rest of the space until after the show or morning. Maybe mail will come. No mail, no show.

Don’t know why the no mail but something broke on the sound affect to the whole thing was called off. Maybe better next time. I’ve heard there is lots of mail around here but just hasn’t been sorted etc.

V-mail from John

Meats Available Are Usual Cuts

At this point we have read several letters from Roscoe to his older boys, but we have not really read any of the boys’ letters to him as not many of them survive. Today’s post is a V-mail that John wrote to his father. In the United States, meat rationing was about to begin. Adults and children over the age of 12 were limited to 2 1/2 lbs of meat per week. Children under 12 received an even smaller portion. There were exceptions. Less choice cuts of meat were not included under the 2 1/2 pound per week rule. Check out the above article which lists the non-restricted meats. Two recipes are also included.

Dear Daddy,

It is a sunny Saturday afternoon and I feel kind of down in the dumps. I believe it is because I haven’t had any meat today. We had a very light dinner because Mother had company before noon and didn’t get a chance to fix a very big one. I was taking my music lesson so I couldn’t help her. – Mother is on the studio couch writing and David is at the other end of the couch sleeping peacefully but with a frown on his face. Mark just came in and is causing general confusion. Guess that’s about all

There has been mention of late of letters sent to the boys, John & Mark, and vice versa. At this point, many of those letters appear to be gone. Thus far we have been fortunate to have a sampling of some of the correspondence between Roscoe and the boys. There are more in the collection, but not all of them apparently survived. More of the ones from Roscoe than to him seemed to be preserved. We can thank Gladys for that. We can assume that the letters the boys received on this day where the ones Roscoe wrote on October 28th. To refresh your memory of the letters Roscoe wrote to the boys, click on the names: John or Mark.

Dear Daddy,

Sat. and 4 letters – two for me and one each for John & Mark. We have been getting your letters regularly and I think I have all you sent including the first. You said you rec’d my letter with David’s picture – but you didn’t comment on it. It may not be such a good picture but I did send several later that were we thought good. John and Mark have been writing to you but you evidently haven’t rec’d their letters. John is baking a cake and Mark is dusting this A.M. I don’t get much done mornings but take care of David – and mix his formulas. This A.M. he weighed 8-3 and he was 6 weeks old Wed (this is Sat) so he is almost averaging ½ lb a week. In case the letters don’t get to you I keep repeating his weight. He was just 6 – 3 ¼ at two weeks. I talked to Ira & he said he would write you again. So glad you are getting some mail now. Wish you could get all that was sent. I have sent both kinds. You should gets lots of letters & also Christmas boxes. This letter isn’t very newsy but I am writing in a hurry and tomorrow is Sun. and maybe I’ll have more time. I wrote a reg. letter yesterday and gave you a financial report.

Lots of Love
Mother
