Dear Daddy – Like spring again today but since we have had so much sub zero weather may have more before this month is over. Everything is quiet at present except for the stoker running – J & M both reading Mother and D. in bed. After the 6 P.M. feeding D. gets tucked in. He is getting old enough to show off – not quite 5 months – but J & M fuss around him so much when they are home and he is awake – I imagine he will be quite an actor by his first birthday – but will try to keep him from being too spoiled. Mark was first cornet player in the ban and was set back to second, so I got him to practice more and now he is back as first. I think if I keep on urging him he will get along. John has a habit of practicing the sax every evening when he comes home from school – Francis Kenny was married and is stationed in Bethesda Maryland. Art was attendant. He is in New River, N.C. – Byrnes said he has a permanent assignment there. Eileen Masters is in the WAAC – was she the one at St. E? K. Jones has been home – is going to take sub training when he goes back (New London – Conn) Boomershine is in N.Y. – He got a (j.g.) It seems strange for high school boys to be enlisting but that is happening now – Yost & Egan are two – – Funks went to Green Bay today for a visit. They took Louise along but with both boys they need help. I am glad D. isn’t as large as Donnie – because Donnie is so heavy (over 20 lbs at 6 mo.) To date no money for uniforms. The Dept that mails my checks has been moved to Cleveland. If Dolores comes home in April I am going to try and go down for a week-end. I think D. will be old enough to travel then. Your mother is anxious to see him again. Give me your suggestions about the yard.

Lots of little tidbits about local Kentland people in today’s letter:

Floyd E. Hoover was the proprietor of one of Kentland’s filling stations.
Hannah Whitacker was an 80 year old widow who lived with her son John.
John E. “Jack” Kindig was a local dairy farmer.
Curtis B. Kindig was another local farmer, brother to John.
Arthur Voglund was the custodian at the Newton County building. Vivian was his wife.

There were two Kenneth Jones in Kentland on the 1940 census. They were both about the same age and might have been the same person. Both were lodgers. One was a truck driver, and the other was a mechanic at a garage.

Nov 20 – 1942

Dear Daddy –

I didn’t get my letter started last night, so will have to try and relax a while now and see what I can think of that might interest you. I just gave David his 2 P.M. bottle and he is on one end of the couch kicking and hiccoughing and I am on the other end. He weighed 9 lbs 5 oz this A.M. He seems to be gaining much faster but if he does I don’t believe he will get overweight since he was so small at first. Hope you get the pictures we sent in yesterday’s letter. He seems much more developed than one month ago.

Last night the boys (John & Mark) went to see Fibber & Molly and they had just come home when Floyd & Ruth stopped. They were on their way to Flora [Florida] from Blue Island. Floyd had to go to Brazil today to present his case to the draft board. They will be back thru here Sunday so maybe he will know by then. I told them to bring your Mother back with them if she will come. She is planning to have Kenneth bring her up but perhaps she will come with Floyd & Ruth. Floyd sold his tools to Mr. Zell and is to bring them Sun. He has a moving picture camera. Ruth saved 25⁰⁰ in silver and gave to him for his birthday. He took that and the tool money & bought the camera. I hope they get here in time Sun. to take some pictures of the boys (all three).

I have been so busy all day, haven’t had time to read the papers but glanced at the Enterprize and saw that Jack Kindig died at Watseka & Curtis is very ill in a hospital in Michigan. Also Mrs. Whittaker

[page 2] died from a heart attack.

The reason for being so busy today – washed. Going to Laf. [Lafayette] tomorrow and it is such a nice day wanted to get the washing done. It is still very warm for Nov. Warm enough for me to hang out clothes without gloves on. I suppose in a day or two it will be zero or if not that cold, much colder than now. I know I wasn’t hanging clothes out this late last fall. I have been taking the baby out every afternoon this week. Walked over to the high school and registered yesterday. We have an “A” rating. The rationing won’t begin until Dec. 1. It was to start Nov. 22 but was changed. I am going to keep the tank filled so when it starts I will be that much ahead. Of course there won’t be any place in particular to go but in case I would need to make a trip I will have a little ahead.

Had a card from Jim this morning and he wants to know what to buy the boys for Christmas. I think I’ll write and tell him they are filling 25¢ stamp books and he may buy stamps if he wants to. John says all he wants is an album of records and I have ordered that at the Foster shop. Mark thinks up something new every week or so. The latest is ice skates. Before that it was a tool chest. The other day he came in and wanted me to buy him a pony. I think he had been talking to Floyd Hoover. You can guess it didn’t take me long to nip that in the bud. I told him that was one thing definitely out of the question.

[page 3] It looks like the new post office in the Chev. Building is about ready for occupation.

Yesterday Vivian Voglund saw me and asked if she owed anything. I told her I had a charge but didn’t know if it was right or not. She paid 2⁰⁰ – said she hadn’t paid before you left. I wish a few more with larger bills would pay up. She says Art [Arthur Voglund] is with A.C.B. and is a first class Seaman and will be sent out she is afraid. I see in the paper that Kenny Jones is at sea now.

I haven’t had any letters for three days. I will probably get a bunch tomorrow (I hope). Just hope you continue to get mail and that all those Sept. letters get to you. Ruthie said last night her box wasn’t marked for Christmas so you should get it before the Dec 25^th boxes. However it was a pretty good sized box. There was a shirt from your laundry we tucked in to help pad it. It was well wrapped so shouldn’t be in such a bad shape if & when it arrives.

For a few days I put the bank bal down but haven’t done if for a while now. It is still around 700, but will have some Ins to pay in Dec (John Hancock). Of course will have the allotment to add Dec. 1.

I am a little tired and can’t seem to do very good thinking. David is sleeping so think I’ll nap to.

Halloween (October 31, 1942) – Gladys

Today’s letter features some great re-capping on Gladys’ part. At this point in the letters, Gladys knew that a chunk of letters were missing in action. We learn a bit more about the night David was born and Gladys finally has the news that Roscoe was aware of David’s birth. She provided a lot of answers to questions that Roscoe had been asking over the last month or so. How much money was in the bank account? Who was helping around the house? Who had enlisted and who was still in town?

Oct 31-1942

Dear Daddy-

At last I received a letter from you saying you had the news about David – and the middle name is Anthony – I wrote all the details in a letter while I was in the hospital but just in case it was lost I will try and give you a brief resume .

My water broke at 11 P.M. – without any pain. I called Dr. Cole & he said to come to the hospital. I called Bob & then Dorothy – Clarice also went along. After we started I began having hard pains and Bob drove as fast as he could. We were on 4^th floor by midnight. David was born at 2:03 and I had ether as soon as they got me strapped down so didn’t know much about the pain at the last. I was just beginning to get very hard pains when they took me in to the delivery room (1:30) so you know I got thru in fine shape and of course no tears inside or out because the little fellow only weighed 6-11. I suffered more with my breasts than I did having him. I tried to nurse him and he kept losing weight – he went back to 6 lbs – and my breasts were well stimulated. They gave me stilbestrol and I had to take twice as much as I did the last time. Dr. C. made me stay in the hospital two weeks. When we came home David weighed 6-3 ¼ and now weighs almost 8 lbs and he will be 6 weeks old Wed (Nov. 4). When I left the hospital I sent for my bill and the nurse came in and said it had already been taken care of. We are feeding David Carnation, Dextri-Maltrose – orange juice & Oleum Per.

Everything here is going along pretty good now that I am able to be up and doing again. The furnace is O.K. So far the boys have been taking care of it with help from the neighbors now & then. Link has taken the clinkers out and Mr. Zell cleaned the soot & clinkers out once. I think the boys & I will be able to keep it in shape now. Joe got the storm windows put up and after the leaves all fall I will have the guttering cleaned. I think everything has been attended to. I had antifreeze put in the car & winter oil put in. I keep the tires checked. The bank acct. at present is around 700⁰⁰ that includes the birthday gift. I have paid the coal bill and of course ins. as it comes due. There are a few drug bills to pay but altogether they won’t amount to 100⁰⁰. I will pay those one day when I take a

[page 2]notion. They don’t bother me much with statements maybe if they did I would pay them.

Tomorrow is my birthday. Mrs. P. sent me 5⁰⁰ and a gift to David (3⁰⁰). Dorothy Krull sent me a potted plant. Mother brought me a gift when she came in Sept and gave it to me then – a set of bowls. She is still here and I don’t know when she is going home. Nothing has been said about it lately. I tried to get help with housecleaning but “no go.” I will do it myself as I have time & feel like it. I am not going to make myself sick doing it however.

The boys (John & Mark) are taking Sherman oral vaccine. Maybe that will keep them from taking cold. John had a slight head cold when he started taking the pills & after two his cold was gone. He had a sneezing all thru hay fever tie. I was of the opinion he had some allergy.

If all my letters get to you, you will get all the local news because I tried to put all of interest in my letters. So many have gone into service – here is a list – Art Kenney – Paul Bruck, Kenny Jones, Emery J. Jr., Eddie Britton, Leo Yose, the two Mullen boys, the Myers twins (Al didn’t enlist). There are many others but I can’t think of them now. I think I told you Newell Lamb has the office. He was appointed Prosecuting Attorney due to the present one going to service. Clifford S. as you know is running for election on the Dem. Ticket. He didn’t do much with our collections. I saw A. Taylor yesterday & he gave me a check for 9⁰⁰. He said he thought that was all he owed. I told him I would send him an itemized statement. He said if I was right he would pay the rest.

I talk to Mrs. R. rather often. She calls me or I call her. I told her you hadn’t had news for a long time & didn’t know about the baby. Earl stopped there en route to an Army Camp in Pa. and she told him. He came to see me and was going to help me get word to you when I got your letter saying you at last had my V-mail letters. I sent several while I was in bed at home and in the hospital. I don’t believe you rec’d all. If you get my previous letters this will be a rehash.

I tried to call Mrs. Ash while in Laf. But didn’t get an answer. I haven’t talked to her since she saw me in the hospital. I didn’t write to Mrs. W. Sorry he had to go, because I know you enjoyed his company from your letters.

I rec’d two letters yesterday and six today which brings things pretty much up to date for me. Hope you get the Christmas boxes being sent. We sent one. I am sending another for your birthday but don’t know when you will get it.
