Dear Daddy –

Yours of Oct. 23 & one for Mark came today. John’s came yesterday. I was very busy this a.m. – washing, getting lunch started and things upside down in the kitchen – clothes I had washed Wed. piled on the table, when in walked your Mother, Dad, Ruth & Floyd. I didn’t mind the condition of the kitchen but usually someone comes when things aren’t straight – I had spent a little time taking David out & in and had just brought him in and put him to bed a short time before they came & he was asleep. Floyd said they couldn’t stay for lunch because he had to get to Wilmington before the bank closed and he didn’t know when the bank there closed. They wanted to get some movies of David and it was such a grand day for picture taking I took David up. He didn’t mind, got up smiling – went right to Grandma & Grandpa. Your Mother can’t carry him very far – says he is too heavy. We took him out into the front yard and Floyd took several we hope good shots. We tried to get him to stand along but he wouldn’t – walked around the Taylor Tot. The folks went on then and are to come back here Mon. I said we could drive over Sun. and have part of a family gathering. Your Mother said Dolores was married last night and called home to talk to Ralph & Faye. Her name is Stevens. Faye said last week they were going to be married as soon as Steve got back from Cuba. Will try & get a wedding gift sent to them but haven’t the slightest idea what to get.

Took David to Cosmopolitan Club today and he had quite a time walking around chairs & getting picked up & and made over by the ladies. He acted very nice most of the time. After I came home with him Mark got him to take a few steps along. He stood alone several times today & stood alone in the yard yesterday. I suppose he will soon learn he can walk along, then he will get into more things than he does now. His favorite place to play is in the pan drawers in the stove. You can imagine how quickly he can fill the floor with pans – and me trying to work – but he can’t hurt anything and I rather like his company in the kitchen. Arlene still keeps Donnie in his pen but with another baby due in less than two months she almost has to keep him in his pen. She hasn’t any permanent help yet. Neither has Mary & she is home from the

[page 2] hospital with her new baby girl (Mary Margaret). You mentioned the Schultz baby – yes I remembered what you wrote about & did think of that when I knew she was going to get another baby.

You said you didn’t remember Doris Green – she is the girl (welfare) who used to live with Geo. Tilton’s and went to high school here. She was going to State when she got married. Tilton’s had to put glasses on their little boy. He was wearing a patch over one eye today. As far as I know Wilsons haven’t done anything about Susie’s eyes. Probably won’t for a while if Ellsworth has to go to the Army. Doris’ sister Juanita got married (Maurice Sargent) and is back here working for Ellsworth.

Mark had quite a good time at the school Halloween party this afternoon dressed in my old finery. However he didn’t get first prize he had hoped to get. He brought home a sack of popcorn – cookies, candy, etc. The S.S. class is having a party at Helen Bartlett’s tonite but I didn’t feel up to that kind of a party. I suppose by the 31^st coming on Sun. the children will be out Sat. night playing their pranks, or whatever they do (I don’t mean ours, but the crowds that always go out).

Just had to go upstairs and see about David. He was stirring around and of course was uncovered. I tucked him back in and he quieted down.

Mark is getting ready for bead – think I will too.

Dear Daddy,

I had hoped to be able to send pictures for your birthday but couldn’t get film soon enough. I have a roll now but want to save it until I get another roll. I will start taking pictures as soon as I have a sunny day. It was nice a while today but D. was sleeping. It is too cloudy now to use good film. Ruthie said she would try & get me some over at Bluffton. She says they can get Technicolor film for cameras, so hope she gets me some, would like for you to see David’s snow suit. Everyone who sees it thinks it’s pretty nice. Bright red jacket – Navy pants & cap. I wanted Floyd to get it in his movie last week but there wasn’t enough sunshine. I am sending two small boxes to you for Christmas. They aren’t much but if you are still there Christmas it will be better than no boxes at all. Wish I could send you a picture of what David is doing now. Just acting “cute.”

Dear Daddy –

About all I have done today besides get lunch is write letters. I baked a cake and John & Mark assured me I am the best cake baker. John came in & when he saw the cake & steak hugged & kissed me. I told him he was like Dagwood in the funnies. He saw what was “cooking” before he embraced me. However I appreciated the gesture anyway. Had a letter from Jim & Pauline (she writes for Glen & Co. now) this a.m. and an Ins. receipt. Also rec’d a jar of Morruguant I ordered from Massengill salesman last week. That is the best ointment, bar none, I ever saw for burns. I give “dabs” to the neighbors when they have burns & thought I had better get a new supply. I smeared it over a place on my arm I touched on the hot grill & presto! No burn. It works like magic.

It is blowing today & cloudy. I was going to take David out in the sunshine but don’t see any now. There was some around noon but he was asleep and I was busy getting lunch ready. It feels like winter is blowing its cold breath the way it comes in around even the windows & storm windows. I am going to try a stoker full of Indiana coal. Chet says he has some that is pretty good. I have had our order in since last spring & no Va. Coal has been rec’d here. Floyd said Bluffton was the same way. I saw a load of stoker coal going out at Garrison’s, Earl Pack. I called Bun Walkup about getting me some there but he said he wouldn’t have it so it must be like the kind McCartney had that time. Now I wish we had an oil burner because there seems to be plenty of oil around here. But wishful thinking won’t do any good, so will do the next best thing & try Indiana coal.

David is taking a nap. He is some tired from his visiting. He doesn’t walk alone yet, gets tired of his pen and has too many spills out in the broad open spaces, so little fellow has a hard time once in a while. He certainly has a mind of his own about what he wants to do. I just wonder if Daddy wouldn’t spank a little more than Mother does. So far he hasn’t gotten very many but I think he will get them in time.

[page 2] I have a roll of film so will get some pictures in a day or so, depending on the sunshine. I would take the whole roll & send them this week but don’t know when I can get more so will make this roll last longer.

Today was music club but hardly felt up to social gatherings. Thought I would take David for a walk & mail the letters I have written but it seems so chilly, don’t know whether to take him out or not. He is still asleep – his second nap toady – but I think he was pretty tired from all our visiting around.

J. & M. can write you about their grades. John is getting ready for stunt night. He has a part in the 8^th grade play. Mark plays football all the time. He is trying so hard to get a muscle & get heavy – by the way he is in the 5^th grade this year.

Dear Daddy – Just home from C.C. about 2 hours. Four letters were here of Oct. 13-14-15-16. As soon as we got home had to feed David & put him to bed. He wouldn’t stop crying so I went up to see about him. I brought him down to let him eat some toast while we ate supper. I found the reason he wouldn’t go to sleep – he couldn’t get his thumb for his long sleeper sleeve. I took him back up & he went to sleep. We stopped to see Dave & Marie on the way home. Dave isn’t very well. Goes to the Clinic in T.H. for treatments. They found a spot on his back that was causing neuritis. He will have to write you the details. I think he doesn’t look very strong. When we got home Mr. Zell had our fire going so the house was warm. He told me we had lost three citizens since Wed. Judge Cummings, Willard Sprawl and Shorty Virgin. Floyd showed all his movies last night. The ones he took in Apr. were in Technicolor. They were fine. The colors were splendid in all of them. The pond across the road from Ralph’s house made good background for the pictures taken there. They were going to take pictures of David Sat. or Sun. but they said it wasn’t light enough Sat. & today we left before they came out and it was pouring down rain. We had dinner at Clarence’s today and left as soon as we could after dinner. I wanted to get an early start for home.

Dear Daddy –

Today is David’s 13^th month. We are visiting with Esther & family today. When Leanna was ready to come Imogene, Ruthie, John, Mark, David & I went down and brought her & Linda. Linda is a very healthy looking young lady. Is on pasteurized & Karo. It seems funny for them to go to town and buy pasteurized milk since I have been here but your Dad just milks one cow and she is a Jersey and since David is sensitive to rich milk I thought it would be better to get the pasteurized. However I boil it – remember you said to boil it until the baby is old enough to boil his own. Ruth & Floyd brought their movie camera & want to take some pictures tomorrow if it’s sunny. It is raining now. Ruth took some of J. & M. & Sam’s new dog but David was taking a nap & didn’t get in that picture. They (R. & F.) are coming out tonite and show all their movies. Mom asked all the families to come tonite & see them so we will probably have a house full. After dinner Imogene showed us their wedding gifts. Her brother is in Hawaii and sent her a luncheon set from there.

– – – We have been to town, stopped at Clarence’s on the way home & now back home. J. & M. stayed to play monopoly with Dwane. Clarence’s went to T.H. today to get Wilma. She gets every week-end off so far. She likes her work. I asked her when she would get her cap and she said Feb. We are to go to Clarence’s for dinner tomorrow, then start home soon after dinner. I want to stop in Brazil on the way & see Dave & Marie. So far we have visited all the relatives (except Clarences & them tomorrow). Everyone thinks David is quite the boy. I saw several people in town – I thought I would see more but we were too early today & it was raining.

[page 2] Dot Salter Hoffman had a roll of 116 film she sold me so now I can take some more pictures of David & the rest of us. Ruthie said she would try & get me some so maybe I can manage pictures once a month now for a while.

David is in the baby bed playing with two sauce pans grandma gave him, having quite a time & jabbering like he really is saying things.

I must get this finished and get busy – Have to get David’s milk boiled for supper,

Dear Daddy,

Yours of Oct. 5, 8, 9 & 10 came today – one picture – Thanks and reminds me to tell you I haven’t any film and can’t get any for our camera. I will keep trying. Maybe I can find a roll in time for Oct. 23 – (13^th month). David is now sitting in his high chair chewing on a crust of bread – he seems to like to eat just plain bread. I cut his hair today and I like it very much. He jabbers like John used to do. Lucile kept him yesterday until after the funeral and she said he was very good. Slept from 1 pm till 3 – Floyd & Ruth brought him home after we came back to the house for all the family to see. Your Dad, Ralph, Faye, Glendon & Clara came yesterday. Your Mother went back – She had intended to stay but J. & T. stayed so she went home. I am to take them to T.H. Wed and go on to C.C. The boys will be out of school from Wed. noon (teachers convention). Which reminds me – Mark brought his card home with 3 A’s, 1 A-, 5 B’s, 1 B+. John didn’t get his card today. The band teacher had to resign due to a heart condition.

[page 2] As yet I haven’t received the autopsy report but know there was carcinoma of Pancreas & gall stones. I’ll send it as soon as I get it. I asked the Red Cross to get a message to you so hope you got it. I haven’t talked to Dr. Cole since last Thurs. I thought he might be able to explain things fully after the O.M. but the report will no doubt do that.

Jim addressed cards to people who sent flowers, pallbearers, Mrs. Knowlton & Rathburn & Rev. Servies. We both signed – I got a wire for $10⁰⁰ from Glen this a.m. for flowers. Of course I had taken care of the flowers for all the children. Jim had a pd. up pol. for $100⁰⁰ and one for $315⁰⁰ I have here. I paid the hospital bill in full Fri. – The total was $248⁰⁰ but I had kept it paid every week. If I figure correctly I have a bal. of $23 – now in the bank but have no outstanding bills except the drug store and it isn’t much. There isn’t anything I can think of I’ll need to pay before the first. The Ins. is taken care of now until Dec. J. & T. are out right now. Mark is in the yard – John is trying to entertain D. and I must get this finished so it will get mailed. I still think you could write a book. I have your letters to prove it when you come back.

Dear Daddy –

Yours of Sept. 30 & Oct. 1 came today. I am able to be up today but feel rather weak. My bowels are still a little loose. I didn’t get to go to Laf. yesterday but intend to go today, so will see Dr. Cole if possible. I don’t suppose he will give me anything since I have the situation pretty well in hand. I am still taking kaeopectate (misspelled) today.

Had a wire from Glen and they had arrived home Fri. – pretty good time – left here Mon. 2 P.M. I am glad they are safely home.

Dora Diedam came out last night after I wrote you and said she went in to see Mother before coming home and she was very weak. Couldn’t take a drink by herself. I had promised her Wed. I would be back Fri. but was unable to be out of bed. Alma is taking Reed & the boys to the football game and I am going with them. We will just let them off at Purdue & go on to the hospital. Dora is going to take care of David this afternoon. She asked for the job. I could take him along but would rather leave him home.

[page 2] The sheriff & Mrs. Olson have a new son born Oct. 6. The name wasn’t announced. I intended to include that news item in yesterday’s letter.

You mentioned something about reclassification and Floyd. They are expecting him to be called anytime. I saw in the paper one day this week that the bill to take father’s had been killed. Those bills always coming up about who will be taken next keep the man power at home in a state of nerves. Mrs. Zell said she was preparing to get a job if Mr. Z. had to go, but I think Purdue will try to keep the county agents home if possible.

John has gone to take a lesson. David is asleep – (He should be – woke me at 6 am). Mark is supposed to be cleaning their room. I hear noises up there but don’t know how much he is doing about the cleaning. John said this morning their room would look nice if Mark’s junk didn’t keep it looking so mussy. Mark gets a model airplane started then leaves that & starts another so I told him this morn to put it all away. I don’t know where he is putting things but my guess in the attic.

I hear David stirring so must get busy – Have to bathe him and give him his dinner before I go. His vaccination has a nice scab on it. So far he hasn’t had the tummy ache Mark & I had.

Mark’s Bug (Gladys)

Dear Daddy –

No letters today but have up to Sept. 29 this week. Mark’s bug must have bit me. When I went to bed last night I couldn’t rest because of discomfort in my bowels. About 12:45 the explosions started and kept up until 4 a.m. – When I got up I was so weak I had to call John to help me and had to lie down. I began taking the white stomach medicine and didn’t eat anything ally day. Alma W. was going to Laf. with me but since I was unable to go she came out and took care of D. Got lunch for J. & M. – went home & came back after noon. She wanted to do the washing because it was such a nice day so I told her how to operate the Bendix and she took the sheets down & put in one tub. I had done a tub yesterday so there wasn’t but one to do today. She thought the Bendix pretty nice. I chilled and had fever alternately all afternoon & slept lots. She put D. to bed and went home a little past 4 then J. & M. came home & took over. Alma had the same thing – the first part of the week. I ache all over but think by tomorrow I’ll feel better. John fixed me some tea & toast and I feel better after getting something in my stomach. There is an epidemic around & several children in the grade school were sick. I just hope David doesn’t get it but he certainly has had ample opportunity. I had been having so much trouble with his bowels being lose until I changed him to pasteurized milk. I think the canned milk was too rich for him. He had just one B.M. yesterday & I thought the situation was well in hand but this afternoon he had two loose stools and I thought he was getting what I had but up to bed time

[page 2] he was feeling fine and ate a good supper. John fed him and got along pretty good. He was covered with cereal but was undressed for bed anyway so the cereal was removed with his clothes. Alma took him out for an hour this afternoon. It was so warm out today. I kept him out most of the day yesterday. I like to keep him out of doors as much as possible this warm weather because it will probably turn cool in a few days. I took up the glad bulbs yesterday – They didn’t amount to much but I thought maybe they would do better next year. I had them by the garage and that soil isn’t very good for flowers.

Hard a card from Glen & Pauline and they were in Iowa the 6^th Left here the 4^th so I think they are making good time so far. I’ll be glad to get word they are safely home. Pauline said James L. wasn’t so good going back. I think he learned some tricks from David while here. He was such an inactive baby but had begun doing things.

I see in the paper that Gretchen Dixon’s husband has a medical discharge from the Army & has been in a hospital several weeks. Also Bus Daily has been discharged from the Marines & is home. Arlene called me this a.m. and said they think Louise’s husband is going to be sent out – Louise is going to have a baby so can’t work for Arlene this winter. Arlene was depending some on her but said now she would look seriously for someone else. Arlene is almost 7 months now & isn’t feeling so good. This help situation gets worse & worse.

Had a letter from your Mother today and she said she would like to come up. She had a chance to come with Geo. Wolf once not long ago – He said he would be down there again soon and she could come then but I don’t know when that will be. Had a letter from Ruthie and she said a letter Floyd wrote in the spring had been returned. Must have been about the time I sent one that was returned. She said she was going to keep it as evidence that he had written. Ruthie is working & after taxes, etc., are taken out nets $20⁰⁰ wk.

I must write to your Mother yet so will call this a letter.

Dear Mother,

This seems to be the end of the month again and that leaves another behind. In other word tomorrow will mark the beginning of the 15^th mo. Time is drawing nearer & nearer but as yet we don’t know how long it will be. We’ll just wait and see. It’s really fun on the downhill stretch because there is something to look forward to. In the beginning the only thing that could be seen was the peak ahead.

Now – 2 ½ hours later

[page 2] had some running around to do and had to go when I could get transportation. It must seem to you from the letters I write that all I do is run around and you are about right but it’s all part of the official business.

In Ruth M.’s letter she said she was sending me a birthday present – she admitted it was a little early. I’d just as soon she hadn’t sent anything because packages are usually not in good condition and why waste time and money doing a thing like that. I believe however I’ve gone into that several times. I hope you keep that in mind also. If there was

[page 3] something I needed I ask but there isn’t a thing. The food is better and my food that you would get would come from your rations so don’t. Tobacco of all kinds are plentiful and much less in price than there so that it out. Letters and pictures are the most desirable so as long as they keep coming I’ll not complain.

I head heard over the radio that they were going to reclassify some of the 4F group. I wonder if that will affect Floyd in any way. In their letter the other day it wasn’t mentioned.

Sept. 15 – 1943

Dear Daddy –

Another chilly day. The sun did shine and we got a washer of clothes dry. We have to wash every day with 2 babies in the house. James L. is so different from David. James L. will stay put any place. He can be left on the bath table, couch, bed, play chair, Taylor Tot or anywhere – David climbs out of anything but his bed & play pen and has for months. This evening Pauline was holding David and said James L. is much easier to hold. David won’t sit still – just wants to climb all over a person. I often wonder what his Daddy would do about his urge to move around all the time – Maybe just like we do – just try to keep him from getting a fall. I put a pr. of corduroy overalls on him today and J. & M. thought he looked like a boy should look. He still has long hair, but it curls up around his neck & his Mother can’t cut

[page 2] it off – she keeps saying she will give him a hair cut when he is a yr. old. I think I know what Daddy would say – “give that boys a hair cut.”

Uncle Wes & Aunt J. were here enroute to C.C. this a.m. – Uncle has lost 30 lbs. & doesn’t look so good. Has had a bronchial cough that has taken him down.

J. & M. have gone to the fair tonite with Zells. They had grand stand seats. I made them wear wraps. It is so cool they need heavy coats – but didn’t want to wear anything. It’s hard to think it is so cool this early in the fall. Mrs. Zell said today it looked like snow. Of course it didn’t snow but the clouds would look like snow clouds sometimes.

I have to meet Glenn in Laf. tomorrow & see Mother. David seems to have a little cold or it may be an allergy – I can’t tell and I want Dr. Cole to see him. Since John has his fall allergy too or it may be just a cold. This cool weather so early is a good excuse for colds.

Arlene called me today. She hasn’t any help yet and it keeps her busy doing everything. I asked her to go to Laf. with me but said

[page 3] it was so hard for her to get away now. She has to have everything prepared for meals before she leaves. I really feel sorry for the girl because she isn’t too strong and with this other baby coming has her hands full.

I havne’t had time to get John & Mark down to writing you again but will try over the week-end to get them to. John has a teacher (Band) Clements from Jasonville – He knows Floyd & says he knew of you. He and John had quite a chat one evening after school. I know only a few teachers so far – Al had to hire so many new ones this fall.

My hands are all over the “spell” they had but are tender and burn this evening from running out to the clothes line today. Pauline is cleaning house for me while they are here. She got the little bedroom cleaned today & wants to clean the boys’ room tomorrow. She is a hard worker & clean. A lot different from Norma. She wasn’t much on the work order. She says Glen will take the screens down & put on the storm windows. He wants to wait a few days to see about Mother before they start back. He is much heavier than he used to be. His asthma isn’t as bad now that is it cooler.

It’s about time for the boys to come home from the fair.
