Monday morning (Gladys)

Dear Daddy – Monday morn and no letters – but got five Fri & Sat – and one I had been looking for – about the yard. (Mar 25 & 26 – Apr 4-5-6) We spaded up more flower beds, but the space between the garage & tree was a run way for the children and that kept the grass from growing so I decided to do something about it. I wanted to work out in the yard today but so far it is cloudy & cool. When it is warm I put D. in his buggy and I can go outside and work but don’t like to leave him inside alone. I’ll be glad when Mother gets back so I can dash out when I want to. We took a long walk yesterday – it was so nice out – We made several calls, stopped at Plummers but Mrs. P. was in bed with a touch of flu – coming home to this chilly weather gave them both colds – so we didn’t stay long there. We called on Jimmy Ed – I wish you could do something for him – his skin is like sand paper and the back of his head is a mass of dry scales – his red hair (and he had so much) is all gone in the back. Lucile said they were thinking about going to someone else with him but Dr. M. thinks when he gets old enough to take foods other than milk he will get better. Dr. M. changed him to lactic acid sometime ago but it doesn’t seem to do much good. Mrs. Zell, Lucile & I went to an Easter Cantata at the Methodist last nite. J. & M. stayed with D., but he sleeps so they weren’t bothered with him. I must send Wilma a graduation gift. She is going into nurses training at the union.

Dear Daddy – Fri & Sat we rec’d 5 letters – the latest written Apr 6 – two back Mar 25 & 26 – but the one I had been looking for – in answer to my letter asking your advice about the yard. You had evidently written once before but I never did get it. There are still a few missing if you have written daily but maybe they will come. Floy & Ruth came over for a while yesterday – Nick bought Floyd’s tools for Buddy. Mark wondered why Uncle F. didn’t give him the tools – I told him there was the little matter of $50. F. & R. are moving to Blufton in about 10 days and Geo Burcham from C.C. is taking Flora job. David is taking a long nap but will soon be time for his 2 P.M. feeding. I got a good pose of him with a toy in his hand – I do hope it turns out well. It is nice and warm out today so will snap one or two. I started taking a roll last week so I will be sure to get a good one somewhere along the way – – Mark is reading (under protest) – Just now our woodpecker did a sound effect on our roof. It was quiet with J. & M. both reading so you know what a laugh that caused. This woodpecker is a pretty regular visitor this spring. – Mark brought three books home from the library and then left them alone as usual, so I told him he had to read them – John has read two, with pleasure – but Mark is reading his [he’s] very much disgusted with me because I am insisting he reads. – – We planted two rows of potatoes yesterday and have two more rows to plant. – – I heard definitely Nick K. has joined the Navy. Hope you get the seeds I sent.

Dear Daddy – Yours of Apr 4 – 5 & also Apr 2 came today and last evening Mark stopped at the P.O. and yours of Mar. 25 & 26 came and a letter from Dr. P. at N.C. – I wrote thanking him for the letter he wrote while you were traveling and he answered. He said that you were OK – At last I got your letter with suggestions about the lawn – we worked yesterday in the back yard and divided some of the shrubbery and filled those bare spaces down at the east corner. I have some seed potatoes & Mr. Zell is going to help us get our rows ready this evening. It is cloudy today and quite chilly. I suppose we won’t have warm weather until after Easter – As you said if you were moved you would have everyone guessing again, but my answer to any inquiries is (as it was before) destination unknown. There is plenty of guessing going on but that won’t them to guess. Dorothy was asking me this week about your new location but I told her I didn’t know. I don’t know what Boonie’s latest guess is but he enjoys guessing so let him have his fun. John has to take his music lesson this P.M. and he is not so pleased about missing “The Barber of Seville.” I think it would be better for your uniforms to be here so I could see that they are aired and taken care of.

Dear Mother,

Mail has really been coming along. Yesterday P.M. I received most of your v-mail up to Mar 26. Also an air mail letter from Mark and Mom dated Mar 30. So you see air mail is really still faster than v-mail. Many of your letters were repeats but that is perfectly OK because we never know when or which letter will come thru. Glad Mark is able to be up and out again and but in the last letter from mom she said John was sent home from school not feeling well but

[page 2] Mark didn’t say anything about it in his letter so he probably just had a cold – although I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t get the measles because they are very contagious.

A v-mail letter also came from Uncle W. and one from the Walkups – Those were dated in March right along with the same dates of yours.

Your idea of the Florida situation next winter sounds OK but not for me because I’m headed for Alaska. This one summer is too long and I think I would not be appreciate another 12 months of the same kind of weather. However I’ll give my opinion on you

Yesterday I said I would send a v-mail but I didn’t because from what I learned v-mail is still not as good as air mail for our region.

I was really amused in your letter when you discussed or told of Paul coming up to find a manure spreader. Seems that was some distance to come for such.

Dear Daddy – Two letters came this a.m. (Mar 20 & 24). I am getting that missing week I told you about. I have Mar 31 & Apr 1 – came the first of this week. Had a letter from Jewell – she said Bill had written you and they had a letter from you. She said Dottys’ baby will be 6 mo old the 28^th of this month & weighs 14 -10 so our David is some larger. He balances the scale around 18 and isn’t quite 7 mo. He certainly does show off – but why shouldn’t he – the boys are always fussing around him. When we were in C.C. they said Carolyn Mary wanted to follow them around – I said ‘just wait David will to when he can get around.” D. has just awakened from a short nap (I think they get shorter all the time) and is trying to tear his bed down. – – I went to Chapter last nite and Cecil D. said they brought Ira home from the hospital but had to take him back – I didn’t get to ask her what is trouble is. Maybe someone else has written you about him. – – After all the snows and wind yesterday it is calm & sunny today. I have a washing out to dry (baby things) and if it keeps warming up want to work on my flower beds and get them ready for seeds. I have sown some grass seed but think I’ll sow more. The fall grass left large areas in our back yard that are bare and the side yard too. The front wasn’t so bad, but there was so many weeds down by the front walk. It is time for D.’s bath & feeding and he is getting a little whine in his voice so I’ll have to give him the “works.” Have a roll of film so will get some pictures for his 7^th month (next Fri)

Sunny but cold (Gladys)

Dear Daddy – It is sunny today but cold, after our snows of yesterday. I went to town yesterday and sent the things you asked for. A week’s letters are missing – I thought they might come today but haven’t seen Carl yet – Maybe he has passed us by. The last I had was Mar 31 & Apr 1. You had added a P.S. to your 31^st letter or I wouldn’t have known you wanted anything. Anna Rhude wrapped the package for me, so you thank her too (mentally). D. is waking up after a short nap and is working on his thumb. It hasn’t been nice enough to take him out this week but maybe I can take him out today – Had to stop & give D. his morning routine – and since I started this we have had two snow storms and the sun is shining again – – Ralph Bower told me he is trying to enlist in the navy – he had an exam and was 2 lbs underweight – but he is going to try & gain and take another exam. Hickey wrote them that he wasn’t with you but if he would need medical attention would see you. Did you ever write to him? If you have had any recent news from Joe R. let me know. I enclosed a picture of all of us in the package I sent yesterday. It was such a good one of John and gives you an idea how much he has grown this winter. It was taken when D. was 5 mo. old – I had two taken at the same time but the other wasn’t as good of J. Mark was watching D. and didn’t take good in either. I wanted to work in the yard this week but the weather hasn’t been agreeable so far. I just get used to working outside then I have to stay in and break in all over again. I won’t work too hard.

Dear Daddy – This is one of those spring day when we have variety – It has snowed several times today but melts as it hits the ground – the sun shines then snow again. I was going to take D. out but it isn’t warm enough – the wind is very chilly. I have given him his afternoon meal vegetables, apple sauce and milk. He is now playing in his bed. He waves his left hand – not at any one in particular but just waves. He shakes his head as if saying “no” and J. & M. think that’s pretty cute. I got your letters of Mar 31 & Apr 1 and you had a P.S. on the 31^st letter about some seed. I’ll go to town after school and get what you asked for and send them today (lettuce, radish & carrot). There are a week’s letters somewhere en route (Mar 24 to 30) but they will probably come this week. These today came in 11 days, so maybe they are still coming via air – in fact I suppose they would have to. About the taxes, I gave you the figures several times before but again they figured 159 – and there is a new State ruling on Gross so we don’t have to pay that now. I talked to Agnes and she is going to get all the information on it and let me know but she said for me not to file gross. The blank come but I’ll just keep it. I’ll keep buying bonds so we can pay all those if they have to be paid. I’ll include a folder on the new tax with the seed. I haven’t taken pictures of D. since his sixth month but will get film (if I can) and take some more around his seventh – I have put him in his buggy by the desk and he is about to beat something out of his toy. Hope you have my letters telling you J. & D. didn’t have measles.

Garden Progress (Gladys)

Dear Daddy – Sunday and J. & M. are in Church. Mother is in T.H. for a visit so D. & I are alone. I just finished bathing & feeding D. and he is having a good kick in his bed. He has a play pen now (Mrs. Shirk loaned it to me). and likes to roll around in it. You wouldn’t recognize the den – (now nursery) – what with all the baby furnishings. I am glad we have that room where it is. It is ideal for a nursery – with all the sunlite it gets. I took David with us (Mark & I) to the garden yesterday and he took a nap in the sunshine. We put out some onion set – sowed carrot seed, spinach & some lettuce – We now have all those & peas. We are going to plant about 30 lbs of potatoes in our garden & several rows of beans. Potatoes are .75 pack & up now. It is a grand day and this afternoon I want to take David for a nice long walk. After all the shut in this winter I can’t be outside too much to suit me. I was so tired when we came in last nite but feel fine today. John stayed in and listened to the Opera yesterday but it will soon be over for the summer. He is to play for Music Club tomorrow. He has been working very hard on the pieces he is playing. I saw two news items I thought might interest you – Datzman’s have a new baby boy. Betty Beaver had a baby boy premature but it died. I haven’t heard from your Mother this week so don’t know how Ralph’s back is – They had Shorer give him an adjustment last Sat but we left Sun so don’t know the results (if any). I thought the adjustment business would interest you. Your Mother will give the details when she writes.Three letters this week.

Dear Daddy – No letter today but have rec’d three this week (Tues). The boys got report cards and they can write you their grades. We can’t work in the yard this eve so they will have time. We raked and tried to clean the back yard but didn’t have time to do it all last evening so will just have to wait now. Had quite a hard rain this morning. Had clothes ready to hang out but they are still in the basket. Everything is beginning to grow and the yard it beginning to recover from the “beating” it took from the weather. The ground was frozen so hard for so long the lawn is bumpy but couldn’t get it tolled at the proper time – Maybe it will smooth out this summer. David is beside me in his high chair trying to turn around and raise a fuss in general. He has one bootee off trying to eat it. I gave him prune juice this a.m. and he kept it down – and he drank it from a cup. It is still rainy looking so won’t get to take him for his afternoon stroll. Had a letter from Jim and he said he might be shipped out any time. Sent me a little memento for our Wedding Anniversary – Floyd Hoover is in charge of the Loan Co. Tommy Thompson did run. Tommy has gone to his father’s farm to help put in crops. The war bond quota for this county is $290,000. Each child is asked to buy three times as many stamps as they had been buying. I have filed a mortgage exemption. It didn’t have to be filed till May 1 but I thought I wouldn’t wait until last minute. D. is beginning to sound a hungry signal so will have to feed him.

A Grand Spring Day (Gladys)

Dear Daddy – No letter today but had three Tues. It is such a grand spring day – just the kind for poets to write about. I think we will work in the yard this evening and if the ground isn’t too wet plant more peas, etc. I took David for a long walk yesterday. He was feeling good and showed off when people talked to him. He seemed to know he was being admired. He took cream of wheat this a.m. without the usual fuss. I gave him some prune juice but he threw it up. He can’t seem to handle fruits of any kind. Ed Johnson asked for your address. He was on his way home to take care of Jimmy Ed so Lucile could finish her ironing. It is about time for J. & M. to come for lunch. They come in with such a bang. I sometimes have to brace myself. The stores are closing now Thurs. afternoons. I thought maybe they wouldn’t do that now but they started last week. The coil factory is working nights to keep up production. If you got my letter mentioning the Stork to visit Bart’s – I think that was just a rumor. The local papers didn’t come today so haven’t any news to add. I saw Ruby Clark and she said Geo (being 38 now) was given his choice of discharge to work in defense work or stay in and he chose the defense work. Is with Allison Indpls. Saw Irene yesterday and she said she would write you. The Dr. at Mayo told her to quit work – but she said that wouldn’t pay the mortgage. It is time for Mark to go to school and take this. We are all fine – John hasn’t had measles and hope he doesn’t.
