Dear David –

Sorry I couldn’t send you a cake, but I have not done anything I haven’t had to do (except a thing or two). After I get thru taking my therapy I am so tired I usually sleep a while. I just went down once this week – didn’t do today but plan to go Monday. Dad fixed a swing for me in the furnace room and I pull my arm on it two of three times a day.

Shirley & Mark & Becky are coming this evening for week-end.

We received 5 shares of GM for our ten shares of DuPont. That is the way DuPont is disposing of their GM stock without upsetting the stock market. That suited us. We should have had more DuPont (we had 10). Int. Silver had climbed back up to 33.

July 4-1962

Dear David –

This letter came and was addressed to Mark. When I saw it was from Federal Home Loan Bank Board I thought I had better call Mark. He said for me to open it and immediately I saw it was for you and was from Ira.

I think the Fields moved today. I didn’t even have the car out of the garage so didn’t get away from home, so can’t say for sure.

Uncle Mutch and Aunt Ruth were here today after having been to Clay City for a reunion. Uncle Mutch had been sick while they were visiting. Daddy gave him a shot of penicillin and after they visited a while went on home. We asked them to stay for dinner but Aunt Ruth said she thought they had better get on home.

Mark’s are coming the week-end of the 13-14-15. Mark seemed to think they wouldn’t be coming down many more times before the baby comes.

[page 2] Dad did a lot of work in the yard – mowed and trimmed. He had to cut the Russian Olive (west one) off – it looks like a post – the blight had ruined all the leaves.

I checked your bank balance and it was down to $6.00. I will put $50.00 in for you tomorrow.

Under separate cover I am sending, by parcel post, the Eisenhower pictures which I mentioned.

You might show one of them to Greta and ask her if she would like to have it. Otherwise, you may use them as you see fit.

Haven’t seen President Eisenhower recently, but everyone tells me that he is really enjoying live and campaigning harder and more effectively than he did when he was serving as our President.

News from John

Tues. July 3 1962

Dear David –

I had a therapy treatment yesterday and will get another Thurs. Since the 4^th is a holiday won’t go tomorrow. Marge Janssen is going to drive for me Thurs. Joan drove yesterday. The Fields are in the process of moving today and will finish tomorrow. The Bowers moved yesterday.

Rec’d a letter from John this a.m. He hasn’t been getting any fresh news from U.S. – says all the papers there are full of news of New Guinea and he was wondering about the stock market. He said he hadn’t been able to get any U.S. news magazines recently. This letter had been mailed from Singapore by a friend so he was able to say a few things he wouldn’t have said otherwise. He is afraid letters mailed from there (Malang) might be censored.

We have had lots of rain in the past two days and the atmosphere is very oppressive today. Makes my arm ache. I am trying to get myself into the mood to take therapy. Sometimes I have to force myself.

End of Term

Dear David –

We will be hoping you get the bus into Kentland Thurs. at midnight. We will wait up that long.

Mark’s were here Sunday. They came in time for noon meal and left shortly after supper. Mark has changed jobs. He is with Kemper Insurance. Shirley is going to have a baby in October. I told them I would keep Becky while Shirley is in the hospital. It had been so hot in Chicago last week – as it was here – that Becky was broken out with a heat rash that looked like measles. They promised to come back for a week-end soon – probably while you are home.

I had a baby shower for Marion Walters last night. They have adopted a little girl (2 months) old.

I found the man to fix the record player – Mr. Mallioux from Kentland T.V. He took it one day last week and brought it back yesterday and it works.

See you Thurs. (I hope).

Appointment Book

May 16 – 1962

Dear David –

This is the stationary on which the printer made a mistake – using a q instead of a g. I thought you wouldn’t mind if I used it for writing to you.

I worked until after one o’clock last night. Dad wanted some new sheets for the appointment book and I cut stencils and after club yesterday ran them off on the mimeograph – 500 sheets run thru twice. I brought them home and had to run the dates in on the typewriter. Dad left the office early to go to Lafayette to a hospital meeting. I worked on the project until time to go to a meeting I had planned to attend. After I came home I resumed the project and finished it. The reason it took so long, we started with the new pages as of today, which meant I had to copy all the appointments which had been made until July 24 – that was as far ahead as Edna had made sheets. I am glad it is done, because Dad wanted to start using the new sheets.

It has been so hot here the air conditioners are running – whereas last week at this time we needed heat. So much for Indiana. Geo. Ade is credited with having said Indiana doesn’t have a climate, just an assortment of weather. We went to the

[page 2] club for dinner Sunday – since it was Mother’s Day. The place was so crowded there wasn’t an empty table. I felt sorry for the waitresses.

Well the stock market took a turn for the better yesterday – so maybe your telegram did some good – but I doubt it. He probably did even see it. I know you felt like doing what you did but I wouldn’t bother myself on such a matter. We bought some more Ford. We have information that it is going to split 2 for 1 this month. We now have 50 shares and after the split will have 100. Dad gave me 10 shares of Devoe-Reynolds for a Mother’s Day gift. Also an orchid corsage.

Edna is going to work May 28 & 29 then since the 30^th is a holiday, begin her vacation on May 31 and come back to work June 14. I think that will work out OK.

Since I worked so late last night I didn’t get up very early and I see it is now 10 a.m. so I must get along.

Election Day

Wednesday May 9, 1962

Dear David:

We had election-day yesterday, but I haven’t been to town yet, so don’t know the results. It has turned a little cool. Dad was afraid it might get too cold for his geraniums, but I think they were safe. They look OK this AM. Dad got the lawn mowed with the walking mower – the reel type – last night after we came home from the office. It just took him 1½ hours. He didn’t get the edges, but plans to do that tonight or tomorrow.

The Fields are looking forward to moving into the new house. I talked to Bob Morgan – head of Pastoral Relations Committee – and he said he hadn’t heard any complaints about Rev. Fields and he himself thinks he should come back, so it looks like from this point that he will come back. I am afraid they would be awfully disappointed if they didn’t get to come. I know they would like to live in the house at least a year. As soon as the Bowers move we (parsonage committee) have painters engaged, also someone to finish the little bathroom next to the kitchen. One group is making money to have the yard landscaped.

Dad will attend a meeting at the hospital this noon and I won’t have to prepare lunch, so hope to get some more cleaning done. I sorted all the literature we have from companies in which we own stock yesterday.

Mr. Kitterman assures us he will be ready to work on the office in about two weeks. I think it will be nearer four weeks. I told Edna he would probably start work at about the time she goes on vacation. She seemed to think that would be a good time for her to go.

[page 2] The town is slowing picking up the pieces, but there is still a lot of work to be done to get all the fallen trees hauled to the dump. Our office still looks like it did after the storm, but there is no use to try to do anything since the remodeling work should soon be starting. Nothing has been done around the grade school building. I hope it is still the same way when you come home because I want you to see how it looks now. I was talking to the workers at the voting place yesterday. They were asking me to get Dr. Y. to condemn the voting booths (they want machines and we used paper and pencils yesterday). I pointed in the direction of the school building and said “there is a building down the street I would like to see condemned” – one old residenter who had gone to school there probably fifty or sixty years ago said, “Oh no, I have many pleasant memories of that building,” – I said, “I don’t imagine the children in there last Monday have pleasant memories.” Why anyone would want to keep that old grim looking building is more than I can understand. If it was good looking I might excuse anyone for wanting to hang on to it, but it certainly doesn’t even possess the looks to justify its existence.

I have been taking diathermy on my arm every day this week and it is about time for me to go get a treatment.

Dear David,

I thought you might want this card. – Don’t they have your I.U. address? We arrived home Wed. around 7 p.m. The sun was shining on us most of the way home. We stopped at Ralph’s and Clarence’s but didn’t find anyone home at the latter’s.

Kentland is still cleaning up the storm debris. Electric saws going all over the place. I drove past the grade building today. There are bricks all around the place. I don’t know how Dad got in there without getting hit. I was in Raub last night to give a program and saw the school building for the first time. It is so much nicer than this old building here, I think it is a good thing we can use it. There is three weeks more of school for Kentland.

Dad is in the hospital today on a baby case. He went over to do surgery this a.m. and one of his OB’s went over early this a.m. His car was still not at the office as I came to the beauty parlour at 1:45.

Summer is here today but according to the forecast we are to have cooler weather tomorrow.

Summer Vacation

Dear David –

I thought I would surprise you and change my writing date. What I really am writing about is the dates for Edna & Arvella’s vacations. In looking over your school calendar you will be in Bloomington from the middle of June until Aug. 10. I told the girls this a.m. one could have the first two weeks in June & the other the last two weeks in Aug. I don’t want you to make any plans for their vacation times except to be home and help me. If you want a vacation before you go back for the fall term which I suppose will be around the middle of Sept. I think you will have plenty of time, but I will need you when they vacate.

[page 2] I am about ready to go to the office (it is now past 4:30). Dad has been getting a lot of work done around the yard. Everything is getting so “springy.” The red bud is in bloom and the forsythia. I have been taking violas up all over the place and have several pots full to set out in the space allotted. You know Dad filled the entire space around the terrace and covered all the violas there, but I had them in several places around the yard so have plenty.

Will bring the things you left when we come Wed.

Dear David:

Here is your housing contract, signed. I kept the yellow copy. If you want it you can get it during Easter vacation.

You were wrong about the twins’ parent – it was not Al Thomas, it was his brother. You weren’t the only one to make the same mistake.

Did I tell you the Bill Ungers had twins? Dad delivered them. Some of Susie’s friends had a shower for her last week. She said sixty or more attended the shower. I attended, but didn’t know how many were there. She received just about everything necessary to take care of twins – all the way from cribs and high chairs to bottles and safety pins.

There is [a] funeral this afternoon, and I had planned to attend – Rozanne Taylor Sander’s father, Omer. He passed away late Saturday night. Rodney had been home on leave and had just returned to duty, but he was able to return for the funeral. My car is in the garage for repairs and hasn’t been returned, so it looks like I will stay at home this afternoon. I went to Indianapolis last Tuesday – Sara drove for me – and we had car trouble on the way home. I took the car into the garage the next day, but they didn’t get all the repairs taken care of, so it had to go back today.

I was home the night of the Academy awards, but was reading and forgot to watch. Dad was in the hospital all evening. Dr. Kresler is on vacation and he is taking care of his patients, in addition to all of his own. It keeps him pretty busy. He plans to spray the trees this evening if he gets to stay home. There is a medical meeting tonight, but there isn’t any program and we couldn’t see any advantage in going, since most of that crows wants to spend the majority of the evening in the bar. They think they have to imbibe for two hours before eating.

We are having drain trouble again and I just had to clean up a mess on the floor. We kept forcing the water out of the sink drain. We heard a noise in the family room and guess what – the water was running out of the washing machine drain. There is a drain pipe that sticks up back of the washing machine and the rubber hose drain from the washing machine fits into it and we were forcing the water out at that point. I had ground some celery tops and when we came back here there was water all over the floor with specks of celery leaves floating thru it. I just finished mopping up that mess. I am sure there are still flecks of celery tops here and there.

Time for my siesta.
