Dear Daddy – No letters today – but this is Mon evening and probably tomorrow some will come. Some come in 10 days – others 2 weeks. I didn’t get much done this evening after school – it rained. The Zell’s went to Laf. today so Betty & Virginia came here after school. We went over and checked up on the chickens – they have about 300 – They keep them in the brooder house until they are ready for market. – Mrs. Z. and I went to church this evening – There is to be services every evening this week till Fri. There is a concert at the grade school Thurs. evening and Mark is to play a solo. John is going with the band to North Manchester to the contest – D. came out today – she said Nick took an exam at Kokomo but has to go to Chicago for a final – He was told he may not pass due to his crooked arm – and if so will not have sea duty. Dr. M. told me they were going to buy Staton’s house, had theirs sold then Link & Irene backed down. I think Dr. M. was disappointed. Dorothy said they were trying to buy it if they could sell their place. Ralph B. & Socky W. were working on it, but it looks like Statons will stay. Newell Lamb didn’t pass so he won’t be in the Navy, but may have to go into the Army – – I sent Wilma a present for graduation – I forgot to get it sent last week. The boys are all upstairs and I am getting sleepy. J. & M. have to take a bath so I needn’t hurry. Mark is still as pokey as ever unless I hurry him along. Thanks again for the lawn suggestions.

Dear Daddy – No letter today but had three Tues. It is such a grand spring day – just the kind for poets to write about. I think we will work in the yard this evening and if the ground isn’t too wet plant more peas, etc. I took David for a long walk yesterday. He was feeling good and showed off when people talked to him. He seemed to know he was being admired. He took cream of wheat this a.m. without the usual fuss. I gave him some prune juice but he threw it up. He can’t seem to handle fruits of any kind. Ed Johnson asked for your address. He was on his way home to take care of Jimmy Ed so Lucile could finish her ironing. It is about time for J. & M. to come for lunch. They come in with such a bang. I sometimes have to brace myself. The stores are closing now Thurs. afternoons. I thought maybe they wouldn’t do that now but they started last week. The coil factory is working nights to keep up production. If you got my letter mentioning the Stork to visit Bart’s – I think that was just a rumor. The local papers didn’t come today so haven’t any news to add. I saw Ruby Clark and she said Geo (being 38 now) was given his choice of discharge to work in defense work or stay in and he chose the defense work. Is with Allison Indpls. Saw Irene yesterday and she said she would write you. The Dr. at Mayo told her to quit work – but she said that wouldn’t pay the mortgage. It is time for Mark to go to school and take this. We are all fine – John hasn’t had measles and hope he doesn’t.

Last Day of March (Gladys)

Dear Daddy – The last day of March – windy but warm. No letter today but one yesterday. I am planning to go to Wilmington tomorrow and get Ruth & Romaine then to C.C. Fri afternoon. I have to take the car to a service Sta. and have it checked before we start traveling. It is about time for David’s vegetables and milk and he is singing a song and sounds like it may get louder. I am trying to get a sweater knitted for him to wear to C.C. but may not get it finished. I took him out for a long walk yesterday and want to get him out again today. It is so warm and sunny. I am afraid I won’t be able to get any more Vit C tablets so must get him in the sun when possible. The Dr. at Mayo Clinic told Irene she needed to rest and wanted her to stay there but she came back and is to be under Dr. Cole’s care. She is still working and I don’t know whether she is going to continue or not. I would bet she doesn’t quit work. Had a tip on where I may be able to collect some money due us, but won’t count on it till I get it (Russell Schultz). Mark wrote you about his bike – well maybe I shouldn’t have, but he wanted it so much and I think I can get him to work enough in the garden this summer to earn it. He is going to rake the yard this evening. I think it should be cleaned off now and a little grass seed put where the weeds were the worst last summer. I want John to help but he is playing in a band concert tomorrow night and he says he has to practice but I think he will work in the yard first. I think from what I hear several married men with children will be taken in the draft this summer. I hear the Beaver’s are going to get another baby. Also the Schultz’s and the Donahue’s. So much for Stork news – that is all I know of now. We are all well- So far John hasn’t taken the measles so hope he doesn’t.

Dear Daddy – this was a 12 letter day – yours from Feb. 27 to Mar 11 came today. Glad you had some letters, even tho they were old – Hope you get the pictures I sent in Feb of all of us. Will write your Mother & Ruth M. today. Ruth called last night about going to C.C. with us. If the measles don’t overtake John & D. we plan to go Apr 2 and take Ruth & Romaine with us. I have been giving Mark unicaps & taking them myself. Since Mark had measles I thought unicaps would be as good as anything – if a little expensive – Don’t worry about taxes I have everything under control. I read in the paper that gross would be refunded on pay received in the Service in 1942 – so should get a check some time for yours. So glad you could drop the (j.g.) I know you were glad too. I took some pictures of D. and J. & M. yesterday for his 6^th month – which will be Wed. I will send another registered better with several pictures as soon as I get those developed. Those people around town did all their guessing on their own before. Dorothy thought I might talk while under ether or coming out when D. was born but I didn’t. Of course there is a lot of speculation now. I am glad you shaved. You might have to use something heavier than a razor if you let it go too long. I didn’t know you had any grey in your beard – tho a few whit ones were showing in your hair. I have a noticeable “few” now myself, but somehow I don’t even care. Link & Irene are back from Mayo Clinic. They haven’t said anything but both have gone back to work and from all appearances aren’t ill. D. is raising a fuss and his grandma is trying to get him quieted. He gets into some awful shapes sometimes and needs a little help. He gets cross ways on his bed and pushes and he is too long to do that and not hurt his head. Weighs 17 lbs.

Dear Daddy – It is raining and some wind too. March is keeping the tradition. Some weather we have had since last Dec. the humidity is up now since it has been raining. You remember Cecil Duttonhaver (you delivered their first baby). He was killed, while driving a truck this week – his funeral is today. John’s name was in the paper this week – about the essay contest (he won second prize $1.50). I am going to try and get him to send you a copy. He wouldn’t let me read it so don’t know what he wrote. He has been studying ‘Courtship of Myles Standish’. Says it is interesting but mushy. Mark is feeling fine and no after effects of measles at yet. David weighed 7 lbs this morning. I see that Geo Clark had been discharged being over 38 years old now. John Krull has been sent to Tampa Fla. Lloyd Tilton is home. He is going east to an officer training school, Jos Mullen is going to Ft Sills Oka for Officers Training. Emmett Miller has been sent to Ft Leonard Wood – Mo. There are several others mentioned in this week’s paper but I thought you knew these better. I suppose you know Dr. Ash has been sent on from N. C. I heard indirectly he had been & Mrs Ash doesn’t know where he is now. I haven’t any late news about town. Haven’t heard any more about Ira Dixon – Link & Irene aren’t back yet from Mayo Clinic. We are all feeling fine. Just hope John & baby don’t take measles but it has been two weeks since Mark started runny a temp so I am hoping they won’t get them. Finances O.K. – Taxes figured 157.33 in case you missed other letters

Dear Daddy – No letters now the past two day – Yours of Feb 26 is the last I have. Some warmer today and no wind so think I’ll take David out for an airing this afternoon. Mark is feeling fine now – when his face gets cold can still see where measles were. John or David show any signs yet of taking them. John wrote an essay in the annual contest at school and won second prize. There were two firsts & two seconds – Angus W. & Beverly Jacobs won first & John & Carolyn Sondergrath second. He will get $1.50 at the end of school term. I want him to send you a copy. He wouldn’t let me read it. He said (quote) “It was drippy” – This younger generation. He went to a party for the seventh grade last night. Angus didn’t have measles. He was out sick and, of course Eve thought he was taking them – so that lessons John’s exposure that we know of to Mark. Had to have Bun Loughridge come out this a.m. – our kitchen appliances stove refrigerator stopped but a fuse was loose. I had tightened it evidently not enough. Have the refrigerator full of meat and had to get it going again. I am getting 12 hens to put in the locker. Parttens promised me another quarter of beef so that will take care of the meat situation for a while. Link & Irene are at Mayo Clinic this week. Will let you know what they found out when they come home. Ma & Jimmy are in Ft. Wayne. Mary is going to have a baby I know. Mrs. J. would like to be there with her. Mrs. Davids’ daughter is staying here with her folks and has a new baby. Dr. M. took care of her and she went to Watseka – so crowded she had to be put in the hall. When the measles scare is well over I want to go see Mrs. Roberts. We talk over the phone once in a while. She is giving me her John’s clothes he outgrows for D. I have quite a few now she brought over. I told you before the 1942 tax figured $157.33. I won’t pay but have bonds to cover. Had a letter from Ruth M. She wants to go to C. C. in April with us if we get to go. Hope we aren’t still having measles then. It is a little on the gloomy side today but not cold.

John is coming home (Gladys)

Dear Daddy – Bright and sunny today – temp mild. Quite a contrast from last week, but this is March. Mark is quite improved – no temp and measles are beginning to fade. He was itching this morning so I put some zymochol on him and that stopped the itching. He is quite cheerful. Dr. M. came out last evening and gave David 2 c.c. Immune Globuline. So far he hasn’t had any reaction. He ate his cereal at 10 & took all his milk then played a while and went to sleep. Weighed 16 ¼ this morning. John is coming home this evening. I am going to try and get him to take the serum but you know as well as I do how he shuns needles. Well if he doesn’t take the serum and has measles I won’t be so afraid for the baby now, and I will isolate John if he does take them. There were 56 out of the grade school so they closed Thurs. Fri but will open Mon. I think I’ll keep Mark home a few days yet so he can catch up a little on his eating before starting out again. Meat Butter, cheese cooking fats are to be rationed April 1. 2 ¼ lb meat per person per week – don’t know about the rest. Joe Kenny was married Feb 22 at Tuscon Arz – he is stationed there – Juanita Arnold & Donald Hall were married at New Brunswick N. J. Mar 4. He is stationed there. She is back here now. Tom Murphy & Mrs. have gone to Flordia for his health. Marlowe Haileys have a baby boy. She had to have a section. Ira Dixon is reported improving. They didn’t operate. Irene said she & Link were going to Mayo Clinic Sat for examinations – She is working all the time but says she doesn’t feel very well. Link is going for his knee. Dr. Cole told Irene if she didn’t get better to quit work & rest. We are all fine.

Dear Daddy – Have been knitting an outfit for David and sitting on John’s bed to keep Mark company. He is breaking out some and rather uncomfortable. Still has a high temp (103 ½ ) but when he breaks out he probably will be better. Dr. M. is going to give David Immune Globline. I am not sure about how to spell it but you know what I mean. John comes after school and takes care of the furnace then goes to Krulls. If M. gets broken out and over this by Sat. John can come back home. I think all the children in the grade school who haven’t had measles will have them now the way new cases keep developing. However it isn’t so bad in High S. Caroline Wright said Valley saw a news reel in Hammond and you were in it – Do you remember doing any posing? She stayed thru two shows to be sure it was you and declares it was . One of the Henry boys was in a news reel shown here. I didn’t see it but others did. Lucile is still having a little difficulty with Jimmy Ed. She said she didn’t think she would ever get him regulated. Was up with him about all last night. When I told her D. sleeps from 6 to 6 she said she didn’t think Jimmy would ever do that but I told her he would in time. He gets his days and nights mixed up once in a while but seems to be growing right along. David was growing faster than he is now because since quitting the 10 P.M. bottle he didn’t take any more in the other four feeding, but he takes more now – so I think will gain more again. At 5 ½ months he weighs a little more than 16 lbs. The last two days I have had to increase the amt of milk in each feeding. It is much warmer. The snow is about gone but more snow won’t surprise me. Must get to bed or I will be getting my days & nights mixed. Irene & Link are going to Mayols [?] for examinations. Irene says she hasn’t felt well all winter.

Dear Daddy – A windy March day & cold. Mrs. Zell took the children to school this a.m. and I am going to get them at noon. I wouldn’t be so particular but Mark has been exposed to the measles and I want to keep him from getting a cold if possible. It must have been below zero again this morning. By Mark having the flu in Jan he hasn’t too much resistance and I am trying to keep him from any undue exposure. I will certainly be glad for warm weather so he can get out in the open. He is planning big on his garden this summer. I think he and I can manage one. John isn’t a bit enthused about taking care of the yard – that is to be his job this summer and Mark is to care for our garden. Now don’t laugh up your sleeve – we are very serious about our garden. I think we can get enough space back of Zells by Link & Bill’s gardens. I saw Irene in the restaurant yesterday. She said her mother is better – she has had a bad cold. Dorothy & Nick have only two waitresses now so they have to work nearly all day. Lois W. had an operation and won’t be able to work for a while. Nick bought Floyd’s tools for Buddy. Mark couldn’t understand why Uncle Floyd didn’t give him those tools. I told him it was just a little matter of $50⁰⁰. Dorothy is going to take the dining room furniture we have stored in the basement. They are putting a bathroom where their pantry is and she needs space to store her dishes. Jim writes that Camp B is being moved to Camp Perry and they are trying to find a place for Thelma to live in Richmond. However he thinks he may be sent out. He may get a leave this month and if so will come home. We are planning to go to C.C. while Dolores is home in April. She will get to be home on her birthday. I think Ruth M. will go with us. I hope we have mild weather then. We are all well and hope we can escape the measles –

Dear Daddy – We have passed thru Jan & Feb with a lot of cold weather, snow, wind, blizzards etc. and today is Mar. one and still the same kind of weather. I was going to write a long letter yesterday but Floyd and Ruth were here and after they left Clarice & Bob came and I didn’t get around to writing so will try and write two today. We are allowed 3 V-mail daily. Ruth M. wants to go to C.C. with us if we get to go so may over and get her. Earl can’t get enough gas only for driving to work. The ration board over there checks on the mileage, but in an area like that I suppose they have to be pretty strict. Floyd & Ruth are to be in Blufton the first of this week. They don’t know yet about Georgia. They have never found out why he was rejected. Today we can start buying on point rationing. 48 points per person for March and we have 5 persons to buy for so I think we can manage. We were allowed 25 cans when we got our books – I didn’t have quite that many but have at least 15. Canned fruits, juices, vegetables and dried and dehydrated are the rationed foods so far. We are going to have a garden I think we can get a plot by Links. You know he had a place by Bill’s garden. Mark is to take care of the garden and John is to take care of the lawn. I think that will be a fair division of the work. If we have as much rain as last summer I know John will have plenty to do. They could hardly keep the grass cut with both working on it. With a little help I think we can get a garden planted and with a little supervision I think Mark can take care of it. I didn’t get a bond for Jan & Feb so will have to double up for Mar & Apr. Haven’t seen any of Statons to talk to them for some time but see them go to work every day. Mrs. James isn’t very well. Has a cold and coughs some. David is asleep since his bath & feeding. Ruth thought he had grown a lot. Weighs just about 16 lbs now.
