Dear David –

I just finished cutting 2 stencils for office sheets. I had made some but wasn’t satisfied with results so decided I would have to do the job over.

I went to Lafayette today for therapy. I went by myself last Friday and today. It is much less bother than trying to find a driver. I leave here at a little after nine and get back home between 12 & 1:00. Peggy drove for me twice. Joan went once or twice and Sarah drove three times. I think I am improving. I can swing on a trapeze, which is something I have been working on for several days. I will be glad when I get thru with these treatments. I am also taking off some weight. Now balance the scales at 118 which

[page 2] is 6 or 7 lbs. lighter than when I went to the hospital. I really count my calories. The way you eat you will never believe how hard it is to lose a few lbs.

Dad is working on a form to pour cement into. He has the base poured for the new incinerator and one of these days is going to get the frame out there and pour the top.

The carpenters haven’t worked on the office for 2 weeks. I was to the point of taking no more inactivity so I called Mr. K. this evening. The excuse had been the windows were holding up the work. He said the windows came today and he was coming back on the job in the morning. I don’t know what I would have said to him if he hadn’t told me that but I had several things to tell him. We would like to get it finished before we go on a week’s vacation Sept. 1 to 9.

[page 3] I don’t know how reliable his word is but he promised to finish this time. It has been a mess. They left a pile of sand by the front step and we have had sand tracked all through the office every day.

Jim Walter has signed to teach at Reynolds, so they will be moving sometime this fall. Jim Walker has signed to teach at Monticello so Kentland loses another good teacher. The school board has been having a lot of difficulty. We have heard so much adverse news about the situation we are wondering if the new school will ever be built. Mr. Nicholson has resigned. He is going into the Airbourne T. V. Program at Purdue. The school teaching business around here is getting to be something like the doctor situation. I am glad Dad isn’t on the Board. With all the guff he has to take in his daily work, he doesn’t need the extra aggravation. However, I think if he had been on the school board things might have not gotten into quite the deplorable condition they are in at present.

[page 4] The enclosed card came from your friend in S. Africa. I thought you might like to get it.

If you have time, drop Marge Cheek a get-well card. She had to have an emergency operation a week ago today. She is at the Geo. Ade Memorial Hospital, Brook, Ind.

We were going to have Bridge Club Sunday night (out of turn because I don’t want to try and have it at the end of August when I will be working in the office) but Krulls are going to have it. We will plan for September and you will be back in school. I’ll bet you hat to miss that – ha!

How’s your money holding out? We haven’t had any word from D. Mace since last Sunday. We just hope no news is good news.

Baby Book December-March

Sadly, the baby book has come to an end. Gladys was less diligent in the last few pages, combining multiple months onto one page. But it does give another glimpse into the family’s life in Liberty, Missouri.

Dec. 25, 1944 –

David’s third Christmas – we are living in Liberty, Mo. After calling on friends Christmas Eve, we came home and exchanged gifts. David was so excited and had as much fun opening his gifts as the rest of the family. He received a large Panda, Books, Wagons, blocks, puzzle, sand bucket & tools, suit and glow in the dark picture.

March 1945. David is now 2 1/2 years old. Weighs 32 lbs. 36 1/2 tall. He is talking quite a lot. Can express himself very well. When we ask him a questions he replies, “Who me, talking to me?” or “not today.” He plays out in the yard and “makes” cottage cheese, meat, pie, birthday cake, etc., in his sand box. He says his soldier doll Bobby and Panda bite him. He likes to go to Sunday School. Sherril took him to a party given for children by the Girl Scouts on Easter Sat. It was so warm today (3-31-45) he went out in the yard and undressed. He loves to take his clothes off. Can put his shoes and sox on but doesn’t lace his shoes correctly, can dress except for buttons. Usually gets his shirts on backwards. Apr. can now lace shoes. June 29 – broke out with chicken pox while visiting Krulls.

Dear Daddy –

The third day without mail but tomorrow is another day. I attended the Post War Planning meeting at the high school last nite. Al Case acted as chairman to start the meeting, then appointed Howard Washburn, Stu Beatly and H. Healy to select a chairman, Vice and Secy. The committee nominated Al for Chairman, Mary Roe, Vice and Bud Weldon, Secy. Others present were Newell Lamb, Judge R. Bower, Bill Ross, Mr. Brandt & Mrs. Brandt, Rebecca Cannon, Lucile Rhude, Howard Hiestand, Ira Dixon & Kenneth McCarty. The State is asking for such committees to be organized all over the state, in every town and city, and the purpose is to help take care of re-adjustments,

[page 2] etc., after the war. The think the committee decided to begin working on now is a recreation center for everybody, to be built next to the high school. Other projects were discussed but it was decided it would be better to concentrate on one thing. They are going to invite one of the Funk men to represent the company, Harold Foulkes, the Cheese Co., and Link having already been appointed to the committee to represent D. Davis Co. Since all three are sizeable concerns, for this size community, should be represented. I don’t know how all mentioned were appointed. I was asked to represent the Woman’s Club and Mary Roe the Jr. Club. I imagine Rebecca Cannon is from the Amer. Legion. – One thing that was mentioned was the ditch, and Bill Ross doesn’t want

[page 3] anything done that will interfere with his farm drainage, but I doubt if anything will be done about the ditch soon. We have had it this long so why hurry. To get along with the meeting, Judge Bower having a poker party in progress at his home had to leave before the meeting was over also Mrs. Cannon had to leave to attend same poker party. I wanted to tell the rest of the committee I was glad they could remain. Of course I didn’t say anything, but you know how important it is to our townfolk to keep up their poker, etc. I thought Rebecca was unusually quiet for her and I suppose she didn’t want to say too much when she didn’t intend to remain thru the whole meeting. The next meeting is scheduled for

[page 4] about a month from now. Will give you more dope on it later. I don’t know what you think of the whole thing, but I believe some good can be accomplished if this same group work on it.

It is warm and sunny today. I hung clothes out. There is just enough breeze to swish the clothes a little.

Nick’s grandma Ramp died yesterday at Mrs. Krull’s. She was 88 years old. I suppose you met her sometime. I never did. She was quite a character from all accounts.

There is a rabie scare around. Krulls had a dog that died and it was determined that he died from rabies so now all dogs are to be quarantined. Mark was so worked up over it he thought he might get rabies because he touched one of Sammon’s dogs. I told him he could only get the disease from the dog biting him or getting saliva into a cut – His imagination ran away with him for a while. John said he didn’t like dogs and they don’t like him.

Dear Daddy –

Writing from the hospital again. I came down today with Mrs. Vanscoyck & Dot. Thought I would save our car a trip. I have to meet them downtown to go back. Mother is about the same, except her abdomen is awfully distended today and she doesn’t eat & keeps losing more weight if that is possible. It is awful to see the condition she is in. Thru it all she seems [to] keep her faculties and talks more than you would think she could. She was very sensible about Glen leaving. Said she knew it would be better for his health to go back. She isn’t getting any medicine now except sleeping pills. She said she wish[ed] she could go back home but I told her I can’t take care of her myself & doubt if I could find any help. She throws up now when she eats more than a few bits of anything. If I could only do something for her. They have a rubber ring under her she is so thin.

I took Mark John & David with me to Sheldon yesterday to get meat then when we came back stopped at Krull’s – The usual 5 o’clock crowd was there – also Louise. She was sitting and I didn’t notice anything but she leaned back and I saw she had on a maternity dress. I looked at her and said “That again.” – She laughed & said “yes” – When I was leaving, I said, “I am glad to see you in such good health again.” She reached up & chocked me. Her boy John is past two now & as large as a 4 yr old. He will be tall like his parents. Lucile was there with Jimmy Ed. He has a cold and she had been to the Dr. & had some pills. Jimmy doesn’t smile as much as David but is cute when he does. He looks almost as old as David & is as heavy – David runs his weight off. He hasn’t had such a good appetite since his vaccination but he does good enough. This vaccination finishes David’s shots.

Mark went to a wiener roast at Taylor’s after school yesterday and couldn’t go to school today. He may have to have something in the way of a laxative if he doesn’t feel better by evening. After he felt too sick to go to school I had to find someone to stay with him so left David at home too. He didn’t want anything to eat –

[page 2] I fixed him some orange juice & that was all he wanted. I told him the next time he couldn’t go to a wiener roast if he couldn’t keep from making himself sick. He didn’t have any temperature. This is the first he has missed school. He has been so good since recovering from his tonsillectomy – but I think this is due to too many wieners.

It’s about time for me to start back to town. Yours of Sept. 27 came yesterday –
Can’t think of any interesting news items just now – maybe I will next time –

Dear Daddy –

Another birthday for our John – 13 – He looks the part – voice changing – growing fast – face full of pimples and blackheads. At present he is listening to Radio Readers’ Digest. He likes to get it every Sunday evening. I baked & decorated a cake, made ice cream & had the Zell girls & Jimmy come to help eat them – they ate almost all the cake and so far no tummy aches. I gave John a dollar, your Mother gave him 25¢ – he rec’d the $2⁰⁰ you sent, the Zells gave him sox & a hankie, so he fared pretty well. Bobby is gone and so are the Krull children so they didn’t get in on the refreshments. I was feeding David his 3 P.M. meal, Mark was working on a block of balsa wood and his knife slipped and cut his hand around the base of his thumb. It bled so much I couldn’t tell at first the cut was so extensive but after trying to wash

[page 2] the blood away I saw it wasn’t just a stab – so thought I had better get him to a Dr. and see if it would be necessary to have stitches taken – I called Matthews, he was out of town for the day, called Hungess at Sheldon, he was out of town, called Brook & Pip was gone on a trip, called Goodland, Rumkorf had left for his vacation, but finally and at last contacted Altier – I took Mark down. He cleaned the wound and found it wasn’t so deep but required one clamp. He gave me sulfathiazole power to dress it with and I am to go back Fri. to have the clamp taken out. I had filed it with sulfanilamide powder as soon as I discovered how long & deep the cut – however would have put sulfa on it anyway. I would have pulled it together myself with tape had it been on the arm but since it was at the base of the thumb thought a Dr. should see it. I washed Mark’s hands & face and put him to bed about 8 P.M. He insisted he wasn’t sleepy but I imagine he is asleep now. He got sick after his hand bled so much, but was very brave and didn’t cry – you know it hurt to have it cleaned and a clamp put in. He kept insisting he is like Daddy and can take punishment without making a fuss.

[page 2] David is getting a “little” spoiled – he has had so much attention he doesn’t want to stay put in his bed or pen. He is always reaching for something he shouldn’t have and climbing out of things. The play chair he is in in one of the pictures I sent – with the table around it is just an invitation for him to climb out on. John said if he were an ordinary baby he would be satisfied to sit & play in the chair. I just got the taylor tot out for him to ride in and today he was turned around in it trying to climb out on the handle. He got fussy so I put him on the floor and he walked around his bed & pen enclosures. He has another tooth today – making 6 altogether and 4 since he was 10 mo. old – He will be 11 mo. tomorrow. He hasn’t gained any the past month but I didn’t expect him to.

Mother wouldn’t eat any supper today – She ate a little broth at noon & drank a little milk. I bathed her yesterday – she doesn’t feel like being bathed every day – and I was feeling her abdomen – There is a definite mass in the middle of her bowels. I am no Dr. but I could feel it. I didn’t tell her, of course, what Dr. Cole told me, but I think she is very despondent about her recovery. I do wish I could

[page 3] do more for her – but I feel so helpless about the whole thing – Dr. Cole says she is definitely too weak for surgery. I asked him if her condition would become painful, but he said it shouldn’t. She has a lot of gas at times and so far her bowels have moved freely. He said she might get a bowel obstruction. The past week the weather has been cool and she hasn’t suffered from the heat.

Mary Parttens called today and said they were going to kill a beef in about 3 wks. And we can have a quarter or more. Clara M. is giving us lima beans to put some in our locker – we are to have half of what she puts in. She is moving to the south side of town – has bought her a house – Henry Molter & family are going to move over here where she lived.

Mary P. said Ruthie hasn’t stood on her feet yet but 2 wks. Ago Dr. M. took another x-ray and her break seems to be in fairly good shape – I saw the first x-ray and both sides of the pelvic bone were broken. I wish I could draw a picture & show you how it looked. Mary said every Dr. & nurse who looked at it said it was the only one like it they had ever seen.

Enough about such things – John is waiting for me to finish so we can go to bed and I am ready to turn in – Have to run the car in first.

Dear Daddy – I rec’d your Aug. 1 letter – but had rec’d up to Aug. 6 last week. Mrs. R. called me this a.m. She had word from Joe – he told her “all about” your being together and how much you both enjoyed the visit. – It is cooler today – Mother is about the same. I told you in yesterday’s letter what Dr. Cole said after examining her. It’s what you didn’t want to think – what I was afraid of and hoped wasn’t. He said just to continue with the same medication. – Mark left with the 4-H group for Dunes State Park this afternoon – He was so happy to get to go. Jim sent the boys each a white cap – the kind he wore before getting a chief rating – so Mark wore one. I had to take it off his head at the table – he was going to wear it all the time. John is talking to David. David & I were both having a good nap when a fly bothered around and disturbed David. I first heard a plane go over that woke me up. They go so low and so many a day – they fly almost over our house sometimes. Every time I hear one I do some wishful thinking about a passenger that could be aboard. Could be – Pinky got a ride home. Funks left today for Land of Lakes, Wis. The detassling business just about got Bill down. Krulls are going up next Sun. for a week. They just keep their restaurant open from 7:30 to 11 – then 3 p.m. to 7:30 – serve breakfast & short orders – Dorothy said they couldn’t get food or help so why stay open 15 hrs. a day.

Dear Daddy –

This is the first regular letter I have written for some time. I got out of the habit – due to not having pictures to enclose, but have some now, covering D.’s 5^th to 6^th month. There isn’t much difference is his pictures but we can see a lot. He does something new quite often and of course that isn’t caught with the camera. We should have a movie camera so we could keep a more accurate record of his growth. It is so nice and warm today I intend taking him out for an airing. However I want to keep away from school children – there are so many diseases going around now – measles, chicken pox & scarlet fever. I have mentioned in several letters that we gave him Immune Globulin and he hasn’t taken measles from Mark – neither did John. The minute Mark said he didn’t feel good I sent him up to bed (Sat a.m. 8:30) and John stayed down, then John went to Krulls & stayed from Mon. till Fri. I do hope John won’t start

[page 2] feeling bad in about a week. We are planning to go to C. C. Apr 2. Dolores will be home and we want to see her. I didn’t plan to go this week-end due to measles – that is John’s exposure by Mark will be three weeks tomorrow and some say an exposure can go three weeks in developing – and I didn’t want to take a chance. Dr. M. said it was not very likely he would take them from Mark after that long. John wrote an essay in a contest and won second – Angus W. won first. He said today he won a spelling contest and the reward was a candy bar but Miss Kitsmiller just gave him a nickel. He is taking algebra and likes it. Mark is still working on the cornet and I must say does good for no more practice than he puts in on it. He had to miss several days school when he had measles but so many were out too that they all had to catch up.

The stool in the “Powder Room” stopped up so had Monroe come out. He said it was from the septic tank and I had to have it cleaned. Billy Floyd cleaned it today – (6.25) and had

[page 3] to dig up the yard quite a bit – now will have to get that place smoothed down again and grass seed sown. I saw Bill out working on his lawn – I went over and he was putting arsenate of lead to kill moles. The moles have been working under his lawn a lot. I want to get some vigaro and seed for our lawn but there is a shortage of fertilizer and I may not be able to get any. There is a new special fertilizer called “Victory Garden” and of course it is compounded specially for gardens and to be used for just that. Paul Y. was here yesterday. He was looking for a manure spreader but hadn’t found one. He said Earl was definitely exempted for but talked like he might have to go – He said he had just bought a new tractor outfit. I’ll get all the “low down” and details if we get to go to C.C. next week. Kenneth would let Clarence try to keep him home. He said he didn’t want to stay home, with all the young men his age going. Had a letter from Ethel W. and she said Allen had gone – his dad could have had him exempted for farm work but Allen wouldn’t let him do it.

[page 4] Ethel said she didn’t blame Allen – because he would have to live with “those boys” when he comes back. That is the way I feel about us. You know I would rather have you here at home – but this thing is bigger than our own personal lives, and as you have written before – we are not the only ones – and when you come home we won’t have any guilty feelings about shirking a duty – so chin up – and all that sort of thing. It can’t last forever. – Well I hear a grunt and that means David is awake and soon will be clamoring for eats, and mentioning eats – it really costs us to eat, but I certainly am glad we have our locker. I haven’t bought meat in the stores for so long but once in a while glance at the show case to see what the prices are and the last time I looked – Hamb. 35 lb T-Bone 48¢ – and with rationing starting Apr 1 – 16 points a person a week is allowed and the amt. of meat one eats depends on the kind. Steak takes 8 pts a lb – so not much steak to be head in a week.

[page 5] I wrote you several times but will repeat – the income tax for ’42 figured 157.53 – also I read that all gross pd on salaries rec’d in Service will be refunded for ’42 – so that will be a little – Haven’t taken time yet to figure what refund will be coming.

— Some time later – Fed David (vegetables & milk) Tried fruit but he didn’t seem to retain it so thought I would try again later – He is taking orange juice again. Also went out and took down the clothes. Certainly is grand to hang them out again – after all the basement drying all winter. I haven’t heard anything about Ira D. recently so he must have gotten over the attack whatever it was. I suppose the people around town will keep you up on most local news. Your letters of Mar 12 & 13 came today. Never think anything you write is boring. If you can only say so much you know I always look for letters and don’t think they are ever dull – I have saved every one – I think they should be kept to hand down to the grandchildren –

The bank bal. at present is about $120⁰⁰ I haven’t had any collections for such a long time – and that much talked of uniform money hasn’t come yet.

[page 6] I am keeping bills paid – Ins, etc. Still have a 34⁰⁰ coal bill but will get it next month. I am taking the dividends off next 59⁰⁰J. Hancock prem. So that will be about half next time (Apri). I sat David up in his buggy – you can see by the picture the kind it is and he has scooted down till he has his feet braced on the foot piece. That is the way he likes to rest in his buggy.

It is a little hazy out like we might get a rain – Wish we would so that loose dirt would sink down where it was dug up.

Hope you can get an idea about us from these pictures. Now that we are getting into spring we should be able to get some good ones.

It is so warm today the physical ed classes have been held out of doors. Hope none catch cold. So far it hasn’t bothered John. I think the physical ed is good for him – he has to take it.

I must get this finished so can take it to the P.O.

Dear Daddy – Have been knitting an outfit for David and sitting on John’s bed to keep Mark company. He is breaking out some and rather uncomfortable. Still has a high temp (103 ½ ) but when he breaks out he probably will be better. Dr. M. is going to give David Immune Globline. I am not sure about how to spell it but you know what I mean. John comes after school and takes care of the furnace then goes to Krulls. If M. gets broken out and over this by Sat. John can come back home. I think all the children in the grade school who haven’t had measles will have them now the way new cases keep developing. However it isn’t so bad in High S. Caroline Wright said Valley saw a news reel in Hammond and you were in it – Do you remember doing any posing? She stayed thru two shows to be sure it was you and declares it was . One of the Henry boys was in a news reel shown here. I didn’t see it but others did. Lucile is still having a little difficulty with Jimmy Ed. She said she didn’t think she would ever get him regulated. Was up with him about all last night. When I told her D. sleeps from 6 to 6 she said she didn’t think Jimmy would ever do that but I told her he would in time. He gets his days and nights mixed up once in a while but seems to be growing right along. David was growing faster than he is now because since quitting the 10 P.M. bottle he didn’t take any more in the other four feeding, but he takes more now – so I think will gain more again. At 5 ½ months he weighs a little more than 16 lbs. The last two days I have had to increase the amt of milk in each feeding. It is much warmer. The snow is about gone but more snow won’t surprise me. Must get to bed or I will be getting my days & nights mixed. Irene & Link are going to Mayols [?] for examinations. Irene says she hasn’t felt well all winter.

Dear Daddy – Had two letter from you today and one from Dr. P., but I had received one from you yesterday. He said he would send the box when he received word from you to send it. It is windy today and not so cold. Mark is still running a temp. but hasn’t broken out yet but probably will today or tomorrow (measles in case you missed previous letters). John is staying at Krulls & I am going to ask Dr. M. about giving David Immune Globuline. Mark feels pretty good and is being very good patient. He is so afraid he will hurt is eyes he is satisfied to have the room darkened. After I put D. to bed (after his 6 P.M. feeding) last evening I stayed with Mark a while. His temp got up to 103 in the afternoon and he was pretty quiet but his temp is down this a.m. and he keeps talking to me. He listens to his radio some but not all the time. Virginia Britton kept Tommy out of school, but I think he was exposed before she kept him home because there was a child broke out in the room and he evidently had temp several day previous to that, and Tommy was in school until the day this child broke out. Your notice for dues to the A.M.A. came yesterday but I think you said not to pay it. Also an announcement of Lake Co. Medical meeting to be held in Hammond. Mr. Monroe came this morning and oiled the furnace. He keeps the dates and comes every 60 days and looks things over. He hasn’t charged me anything yet but maybe he will when he get thru in the spring. He has worked on the drains twice. I asked him about the septic tanks & he said they wouldn’t need cleaning – or shouldn’t for several years. I’ll leave the news & gossip for the men around town to write. Don’t worry about the measles – I am sure Mark will get along OK the way he feels now. You know he stands diseases pretty good. I am going to keep him in as long as necessary.

Dear Daddy – My mail was good today. Had one letter posted Feb. 20 in which you said you had written three before but haven’t rec’d them. Possibly will this week. Well I feel better now and to get regular mail again will help lots. Still have Mark in bed with some temp but no evidence of measles. If he doesn’t break out tomorrow I won’t know what to think. He doesn’t feel bad has a good appetite, but I am keeping him in bed. John is going to Krulls to stay in case Mark does break out so he won’t have to miss school. Dr. M. said that was between me and the health officer. I told him what happened when M. had mumps and I didn’t intend to have that again. If John stayed home I think he would be the only one. There hasn’t been any in John’s class out with measles so I think he won’t be so apt to get them (I hope). I sent your mother a picture of D. and she said he looks like you did, only he is bigger than you were. I hope you have the registered letter by now with all our pictures. We are still have snow and cold weather. Yesterday it was 6 below but is warmer today. I think everyone is so tired of cold weather according to the ground hog tradition we have another week yet of this kind. We are anxious (Mark & I) to get our garden out. John hasn’t any enthusiasm about mowing lawn – as that is to be his job this summer. Not much outside news. It’s been too cold to go out and now that we are under suspicion of measles can’t take the baby out for a while. It is time for his 2 P.M. vegetable & milk and he is getting hungry.
