Dear Mother,

I’m starting this letter before breakfast. Just happened to be up a little early and time on hand. The talked of furniture is finished and I’m using it as a writing table at present – chow time

It is now 24 hours later hence your letter of 26^th now beginning. Things came up that I just couldn’t get to writing again yesterday and I really feel badly but it just couldn’t be helped.

[page 2] I didn’t even have a chance to get my weekly letter out to the folk. It of course being Easter Sunday.

We had fresh meat yesterday and ice cream. I mean those were the unusual things and of course we enjoyed them very much.

I heard indirectly from Dr. P. & W. and everything back there seems to be as tough as it used to be. We just can’ help but feel sorry for them and

It is now chow time again I had better get this thing wound up and into the mail before it lays for another day.

Dear Daddy – Yours of Mar. 27-28-29 & 30 came today but last week I had some Apr. letters – up to 6th – but was glad to get these even if they weren’t so new as last week’s. You had added a P.S. on the 31st letter about the seed and it good thing you did because you asked me to send them in the 30th letter and it came today and as it is I sent them out more than a week ago. David is 7 mo. old today and weighs 18 lbs. Quite a load to carry around. I took him out in the yard yesterday while I worked on the shrubbery. He got a good sun bath and to be sure he did he pulled off his bootees and got his legs tanned good. He has had his bath & breakfast and is about to go to sleep. We went to the Jr. band concert (Clara M. stayed with D. as he goes to bed soon after 6 P.M.) Mark did very good. I am going to try and get him a better horn. I think he would do better. The H.S. band is having a concert next Thurs. nite. John will play the sax but I think he will soon have the oboe mastered enough to play in the band. I will send a regular letter with some pictures today but you probably won’t get it as soon as this. Mr. Wittenberg is in the Navy now and has been sent to Camp Peary (where Jim is now) He is a Lt – Bob Tilton was sent home due to ill health – I think his trouble was allergy. Quite a lot of changing & moving is going on. Luelles sold their place to Chas Dienhart and have moved back to the farm. Dave Beaver is manager of the Monticello store and they live there now.

March 23, 1943 – David is now six months old, weighs 17 lbs and measures 27″ in height.

Apr 1 – David went with Grandma and me to Wilmington to get Aunt Ruth and Romaine. The next day we all went to Clay City to see Grandma & Grandpa. That was the first time Grandpa had seen David. While visiting Grandma & Grandpa we visited Uncle Ralph and Aunt Fay, Mrs. Steiner and Inez Ley. When we returned home stopped to Visit Uncle Dave and Aunt Marie in Brazil.

Apr 21 – Had first shot for whooping cough and diphtheria

April 23- 1943 – David is now 7 months old and weighs 18 lbs – measures 28″ in height. Sits alone, Sings da-da, tries to snap fingers – He has watched me snap my fingers trying to get his attention while feeding him. David doesn’t like to eat his food from a spoon and sometimes he crys when I feed him

May 13 – Had second shot for whooping cough and diphtheria.

Genealogy Crowd Sourcing (with family)

One of the tasks in my quest to organize and scan all the hundreds of photographs in my personal collection is to label the photographs as much as I am able. Many of the photographs from the Yegerlehner collection are labeled. Between my father and my grandmother, they did a great job overall. However, there are still hundreds of unlabeled photographs. This is where my genealogy crowd sourcing comes into the equation.

The Yegerlehner family was very good at staying in touch. They regularly had family functions and reunions. They were great about taking group photographs and not necessarily great at labeling all the individuals in the pictures. I have dozens of pictures from family reunions over the decades. Many of the individuals in the photographs are no longer living. There are children and grandchildren still living who can still identify them. While I don’t know many of my Yegerlehner second and third cousins, I am trying to connect with them. Facebook has been a great tool for finding long lost cousins and I have been relatively successful with this strategy.

After scanning the original photographs for preservation, I made a second copy in which I numbered all the people. Since I had two pictures from differing viewpoints, I numbered the people the same between them. People shifted and moved around (or left the photo). In one picture, it was easier to see an individual and in the other not.

This weekend I posted a few photographs on Facebook in an effort to start identifying the people in the photographs. It was great to see the various family members agreeing as to “who was who.” To reach a broader audience, I am going to share some of the pictures here as well.

These four photographs were taken in November 1940 when Roscoe and Gladys celebrated their housewarming party for the house on E. Dunlop street in Kentland. All of the Yegerlehner siblings came with their families.

Dear Daddy – Three letters today but I think some are still missing. J. & M. got theirs today with the gifts. They will write and thank you. Uncle Wes & Aunt J. stopped this a.m. enroute to C. C. We have about recovered from our trip. We were all tired Mon. but went to bed early and this morning all felt better. Mark and I are going to work in the garden when he comes home from school. Want to plant some peas & onions etc. It isn’t warm enough yet to put out everything. Our garden is directly north over by the corn field. Dr. M. called me today to tell me he had a letter form you about receiving the box. He sent that out early in Jan. Got an announcement from Wilma for her graduation. Will send her something. She is going to enter nurses training. Her boy friend has to go to the army this week. The last box of shells you mentioned with the necklace hasn’t come yet – Neither has the uniform or travel money. It is about time to feed D. his vegetables & milk. He still cries every time I feed him cereal but is hungry if he doesn’t get it and it digests good – so what should I do. I still give him Vit C – he can’t retain orange juice. He was so cute while we were visiting. He is just beginning to imitate. Everyone (almost) agreed he looks like you. Your Dad was so pleased about his name being the same as his grandfather’s. Will send more pictures later. Can’t get film so easily now. Mrs. Roberts called and thinks Joe is being moved. He had written for his other blue uniform then she got a cable not to send it.

Dear Mother,

To begin with address my mail to Navy 224 % Fleet Postmaster for really I believe that will be better and as you might say – make up your mind. This has been a damp, hot Sunday with work going on at all times and no Sunday let down. In fact while everybody else was working I built a small end table to keep my pipe tobacco etc. We are gradually getting squared away and living conditions will really be on the up and up.

In your letter of sometime ago you asked me about the lawn subbery [shrubbery] and as I see it and as previously planned – Really uniform small shrubbery especially like Lloyd’s In scattered locations and not directly set in front of the house should be most desirable but you can use your own judgment since

[page 2] things might look different since I left and the shrubbery we have planted may influence the arrangement of the new, anyway use your own judgment.

As usual I’ve written the Folk today their usual Sunday letter and now it is getting just a little dark and raining slightly. In fact I’ve stopped once to fill a canteen from the tent roof because the water tastes better than otherwise.

Don’t forget the address and don’t forget to send the radish, lettuce and carrot seed. One package in each letter. I also told Mom to send some so maybe one or the other will get here. Right now would be as I see it a very opportune time but I suppose it will be July before the seeds get here.

Well, the space is all gone and so is the daylight so solong,

Dear Daddy – had yours of Mar 14 today – Glad you can write to your folks again. Last week the day Paul Y. was here John was home from school with a headache and we thought he was taking measles but weren’t sure but Paul went back and told them John had measles and your mother sent him a get well card and wrote him a letter telling him to be careful. We had a good laugh over it but so far John hasn’t measles. We are planning to go to Ruth M’s and get Ruth & Romaine Thurs then go to C.C. Fri if John doesn’t get sick by then. It is warm and windy today. I have some dresses on the line airing and they are really getting aired. I want to take David out it is so nice and warm. He is learning to make different tones and that of course thrills all of us when he does something new. He is a naughty boy – doesn’t like cereal & vegetables but I poke them down just the same. He still can’t take orange juice so I am still giving him Vit C. He reminds me so much of John when he was that age, but John could sit alone at 4 mo and David doesn’t quite do that…He is very active and has a good straight back but isn’t quite ready to sit alone. Mark sent you an air mail today. John didn’t write last night – he was studying and didn’t get thru in time. I went to Laf. with Dorothy yesterday. Dr. Donahue extracted an upper wisdom tooth and when that heals she has to go back and have a lower pulled. She didn’t have to go the hospital to have it doe as she thought she would have to do. There is Club this afternoon so I suppose I will go. That is about all the social life I have – not that I care much about social life but I think I need to get away from home a little. Lucile Burgee has a baby girl.

Dear Mother –

Mail again today – so far 17 letters – Your latest being Feb 24. The one you wrote over Geo W. birthday. The oldest one being Sept 29 the one that you wrote while in the hospital. The others were dated mostly in Feb. I think I have the word on the taxes but wonder if you have all the deductions – especially the depreciation on my medical equipment. Anyway it’s too late now. So what the heck. Wish I could send you some money but at present that is impossible. Really I’m not certain how much is due me, what with promotion and also having a balance on the

[page 2] book when I left. I’ll have to write to the Bureau of Supplies and accounts again about that uniform money if it doesn’t arrive but it hasn’t been so very long since I wrote the last letter and it may be on its way. Moving always complicates things. I’ll have to reread your letters again between now and tomorrow to see if there are other things I should mention.

We had a most terrific rain last night and of course we caught the usual rain water. So tomorrow being Mon. I’ll have laundry to do.

We are generally getting things fixed up and life won’t be so primitive in a few weeks but about that time I suppose it will be

[page 3] time for me to move again – Just my luck, but I like it – That is up to a certain point because I begin to feel that after one is out he should be replaced by some of those arm chair navy men in due time – we have seen some returning after a time but we’ve never been able to ascertain the time definitely. You asked about the lawn. No word from me at present but maybe I’ll be able in a few weeks to chance the information.

In your last letter it was obvious that you knew I had left the last station but you didn’t come out and say so much. It’s OK for you to

[page 4] be more free just so you don’t give out information of value to the enemy and I think you haven’t any that would do that. That is mixed up.

I was out in a jeep this a.m. The top was down and the roads muddy so I was pretty much mud sprinkled when I returned. Lots of the boys want one of those when the war is over but I’ll take a little different type myself. They ride too hard and I think our roads are good enough that the better type cars have no trouble getting over the. Of course my friends from Nevada may have use for such. These fellows aren’t Drs. but we do get along

[page 5] well and they still insist that I must come to Reno to practice after the war. Said they would get me the divorce trade. I’ve told them a number of times I’m perfectly satisfied back in Indiana and I still feel that way.

A cute little lizard just went by my foot. He was about 4 inches long – bright green tail and striped body – The stripes run long ways.

Well, I’ll reread the letters and maybe I’ll have more to answer tomorrow. So Solong

Dear Mother,

Mail came this A.M. and we spent much time reading and re-reading. 18 letters, 4 papers and two packages. The letters were from: Statons, Allgood, Sykes, Mom, Boonie (2), Wayne W., C. J. Easley, Bob H., The Earl park Walkups, The packages from Dr. M. and Floyd. I snitched this paper from the office and will try to answer a few providing I can get some stamps and envelopes. Your letters were of the latter part of Jan and the first part of Feb. So the letter I got the other day dated Feb. 19 is still the latest. Our mail has to be

[page 2] re forwarded and that always takes time. Your Valentine missed St. Pat’s day 5 days so you weren’t far from wrong right.

My letters may have been interesting but anymore there is nothing to write about. Description is out – Traveling is not as extensive as the last place and activities not for publication are more numerous. So the letters to in answer to those today will be short and not very “ready.”

The newspapers were all the Newton Co. E. so I was able to catch up on a few things. Jim sent a Norfolk paper dated Sept. 23, so that was pretty old reading. I hate not to write

[page 3] all those people but if I see I’m going to be caught short I’ll just skip them.

All writing has to be done in the daytime because each night there is a total blackout and even the lighting of a smoke has to be done under cover. So you see there isn’t as much time to write as before.

I’ve ceased worrying or even thinking of the taxes but and wish I could get some extra money home but that is impossible at present – Maybe later that can be arranged.

I’ll try a few letters to others now after writing the folks

Dear Daddy – Still having typical March weather. It rained last night and the ground is so soft can’t be walked on. Maybe we will have good garden weather this spring. I went to a garden meeting yesterday. A man from Purdue spoke. There is volumes I don’t know about gardens, but I want to give it a try this summer. Mr. Zell is using all the space north of their house to the corn field for a garden and intends extending it back to Bills’ lot. He said Mark & I could have enough space for our garden. I am going to take Mark to Dr. M. this afternoon to get a certificate to go back to school. Every child who has had the measles has to get a certificate from the Dr. before they can go back to school. Mark seems to feel pretty good. Has been working on models while loafing this week. John hasn’t shown any signs yet of taking measles. I sent a letter out to your folks yesterday to tell them I had yours of Feb 26. Just hope we get to go down in Apr. No letters today. I think there are three yet to come you have mentioned. I would send you stamps but you would probably get others first. Since it took so long for you to get what I did send. The notice for your lodge dues came but I haven’t paid it yet. May do that while in C.C. I saw Hilda Barce and she said Ed is in Kokomo – Recruiting Sta. She said to tell you hello for them. I haven’t seen Ed for a long time but he comes out once in a while. He gets home pretty often. He says he wishes he could be sent out. – About time for John to come for lunch – and he is always so hungry. David is taking a nap. Weighed 16 ½. Has a coming appetite no teeth yet but plenty of pep. Isn’t gaining so fast now – takes too much exercise to get overfat.

Dear Daddy – Another March day – Rain & wind. Mark is still home. He got over the measles nicely but I thought I would be better to keep him in a few days. I am giving him unicaps. He is a little thin but seems to feel good. The baby had 2 c.c. Immune Globuline last Thurs. Can’t tell yet whether he will take measles or not. John said he would rather have them now and not have to be afraid of getting them all the time. So far no one in the 7^th grade has had them but Angus Washburn was out today so he may be taking them. Sammy is over them. I got your letter of Feb 26 today. I wrote your folks and gave a brief resume. Dolores isn’t coming home till Apr 9 so we will plan to go that week-end (Friday the 9^th) after school Ruth M. may go with us. Earl doesn’t get enough gas to drive only to work. I haven’t used all my coupons so far. Will leave the car at the garage and have it greased & checked over before we go. Mom said Kenneth is still in Indpls as far as they know. I believe he wants to go into the air corps. Paul and Earl both got deferments. Wilma graduates this spring and wants to take nurses training. David is chewing on a toy. He acts like his gums bother him. Joe Fletcher saw him yesterday and said he was the best looking boy we have but told him D. looks a lot like John did. Floyd things he looks like Mark. Hope you get his picture & ours I sent some weeks ago. Will have some more to send in a few days. I have been sending pictures in registered letters. There is a meeting at the High School at 2:30 for gardeners. A man from Purdue is going to speak. I may go if I get around in time. Have to feed D. at 2. I should take Mark but this weather wouldn’t be very good for him since I am keeping him home so he won’t catch cold.
