David’s Diary – June 30, 1969

Monday, 30 June 1969

Up shortly after 9:00. Didn’t get much accomplished in the morning. But I did get to work on German. The mail man brought copies of my will from Loyd Starrett—very long + technical—Bonnie managed to plow through much of it in the afternoon. After lunch about 12:30, went back to German—completely by [sic] 2 page quota by 3:15. Then Alan and I went out to measure the picnic table for repairing it. We made a trip to the dump, then to Building Center in Rockport + Gloucester for redwood planks. Came home, worked briefly at the remains of the old table, then I fixed supper since it was fish. We ate about 6:30, listened to CBS news. Then sat in the yard—I studied, after a fashion (German) came in about 8:45—we went to Patriquins—(not Alan) then came home about 10:30. Listened to music briefly with Alan; bathed, off to bed; Θ, lights out 11:35.

Tuesday, 1 July 1969

Up shortly after 8:00—had trouble getting to sleep last night—up  still at 1:00 a.m. So it was hard to come alive this morning. But after breakfast I got to work on German. Bonnie was off for the day on a shopping trip—Alan went into Cambridge. I made some progress in the morning on German. Then took Debby with me to get groceries in Gloucester—mainly a chicken. After getting home—made preparations for supper—feeding Debby +  myself set to work on the picnic table—Alan assisting  (he got back about 1:00). We worked on the table the greater part of the afternoon. Bonnie got home after 4:30 (Alan went to Gloucester to pick her up at Becky Busseys’).—I finished work on the table–fixed supper. Barbecue chicken at the outside fireplace. After supper we sat in the yard—all  bushed. Shortly after 8:00 I got back to work on German. Spent the evening on this—read translation with Alan too; stopped to bathe about midnight; off to bed; lights out 12:50.

Wednesday, 2 July 1969

Up sometime around 9:00 after Θ. Got breakfast and set to work on German. By noon I had done about a page—but there were several interruptions—e.g.  mail man brought more slides, which we viewed immediately. After lunch we began getting ready to go. About 2:00 we finally left for Wellesley—we were off for Robert Peek’s—that is, his parents home at 11 Fells Rd.—they are “house-sitting”. We arrived about 3:15—and shortly thereafter we all headed for nearby Norris pond. Went canoeing—and swimming; Debby seemed quite fascinated. Bob and I did some “bobbing” [?]  on the canoe and both landed in the water. About 6:00 we came back to the house and began working on supper—grilling steaks outside. We had a pleasant supper on the back screened porch. Relaxed, visited after supper—Debby did a lot of walking; about 10:15 we began heading for bed; bathed; to bed, lights out 11:12 [after  ???? book on Queen Elizabeth].

Debbie, April 1969

Peek’s blasted dog Thor begin getting restless about 4:00 a.m.—on the porch beside the room where we were sleeping—so we were disturbed. Got back to sleep after Debby had to be fed. Got up as Peeks we’re leaving—about 7:30. We got ready to go and got on the road about 9:00. Stopped on the way to do the shopping, but we were home by 11:00. Looked through the mail, mounted the baby-gate we bought; relaxed, got lunch—after I made a quick trip too little store—we ate lunch outside on the picnic table. After lunch I was weary—so I napped. Got sound sleep. Up about 3:30. Shaved, went to see Mrs. Leary. When I got home I finally got to my German. Made some progress by supper time—had supper around 6:30—CBS news; relaxed, had coffee with Alan out at the picnic table. Then sorted, dated, numbered the slides which came yesterday; viewed them + duplicates which came today; finally to German for rest of evening; stopped to bathe about 12:00; more on German; off to bed, lights out 1:05.

Friday, 4 July 1969

Got up about 8:20—had breakfast then set to work on German—determined that I would get caught up, which I did, about 2:30 or 3:00 this afternoon. Stopped around noon to eat and shave. After I stopped German, I went out into the yard and read in preparation for my sermon on Isaiah. Stopped about 4:00—few minutes before; dressed, then took Debby with me down to Millbrook Park to visit several of the elderly; didn’t stay long with each one. Saw Parsons, Martin, Anna +  Alvina, Leary, Bate. Home by 5:00. The Busseys came over and we had a cook-out in the yard. This was over about 7:00—at which time I did more reading on the sermon—while Bonnie +  Becky (+ her friend) went to watched [sic]  the parade; I was drowsy, napped. At 9:00 we went to watch Bonfire—really big blaze—took pictures; home about 10:30, bathed  off to bed.

Saturday, 5 July 1969

Up about 8:30 after Θ.  Didn’t bother with breakfast, but went to work numbering and writing out descriptions of the slides to go to Bonnie’s folks (via my folks). Got them boxed up; about 10:00 went to the post office, changed wayside pulpit, home again—got to work on German. Had a light lunch around 12:15, shaved, got back to work on German about 1:15, after taking several pictures of Debby (B+W). Worked on German until after 3:00, then did the bulletin (typed stencil)  very lethargic—beginning to feel ill. Worked on German until 6:30—Watched the news, had supper, back to German. Then set to work on the sermon; running temperature of 100.4—diarrhea. Ugh! Finished sermon, ran bulletins off. Worked on the service—not feeling too hot—rather week; practiced sermon; more German for a few minutes; off to bed; lights out 12:25.

Sunday, 6 July 1969

Didn’t sleep very well—so didn’t feel very well when I got up about 8:30. Still sick, had small breakfast, shaved, left for church. A sizable crowd—Merlin + Becky Levering were in the congregation. I preach [sic] on I Isaiah—with a 101° temperature; I left during the singing of the last hymn.  (Homer Orne gave the benediction.) I didn’t want to expose myself to people. Came home, went to bed. Leverings had lunch with Bonnie—I stayed upstairs didn’t even see them. After they’d gone Bonnie brought me a bowl of soup. Later I got dressed and sat in my chair—worked on German all day long—with few interruptions—mainly to go to the bathroom—the diarrhea continues unfortunately. Didn’t eat much all day so I am rather weak and hungry. But made good progress in German despite my ill health; bathed; small snack, OJ + toast; off to bed lights out 12.

Monday, 23 June 1969

Up about 7:30. Shaved, packed; Kent Millard picked me up, we arrived at Fisk Church about 9:00. The Vietnam resolution was one of the first things on the agenda. Amid a tangle of parliamentary maneuvers it passed, relatively easily actually. No controversial matters—other than it—came up in the morning. Had lunch with Jim Bussey + Charlie Whitford. In the afternoon there were attempts to adjourn the conference to another day—since Bishop Mathews was in New York until this evening. During a roll call on the issue, the Ornes + I  left for Rockport. We were home by 5:00. It was good to see Bonnie + Debby again. Debby doing much better walking. Alan Fererick arrived from Montreal—he’ll be with us for a few days. We had supper together—early in the evening  Bonnie + I went for a walk along the beach—Alan stayed with Debby; came home, relaxed, visited, showed slides; slowly prepared for bed; bathed, off to bed, lights out, after Θ+, 11:15.

Tuesday, 24 June 1969

Up by 8:00. Had breakfast, during which Sarah Orne called me about the death of Mary Olsen; I shaved immediately and went to see her husband. Spent the morning with him; after leaving him about 11:00, dropped in to see the Ornes, then home again. Worked at cleaning up my desk, had lunch. After lunch my post-conference fatigue was making itself felt—wanted a nap. I stretched out about 1:30—didn’t come to until about 4:00. Had coffee with Alan who is still here. Worked further at my desk. Bonnie got home with groceries, which I unloaded from the car. More work at my desk, fixed supper. After supper I became involved in getting slides ready to be sent in—for duplicates and prints for our folks, Stoners, Alan. After this sat talking with Alan on theology, listening to music; bathed, off to bed about 11:30—lights out after Θ+, 11:45.

Wednesday, 25 June 1969

Up before 8:00–had breakfast; by about 8:30 I was working on German–after being away from it since Friday. I was able to spend most of the morning working on it–stopped briefly when the mail man came. After lunch around 12:15 Alan and I began to work on my German translation. He got very sleepy. While he nap I have a cup of coffee, read some in Newsweek, then worked further in German. When he got up he had to finish letter + go out; so I finally got around to starting Fund For Recon. Letters. When Alan returned we worked further until about 5:45. Then we had supper. –Scared Alan  Bonnie + I dropped Debby off at Patriquins and went to see For Love of Ivy at Little Arts Cinema. At 9:00 went to Patriquins for mug-up. Came home about 10:00; visited with Alan. Bonnie went to bed; Alan and I listened to records; bathed; off to bed, lights out 12:12.

Thursday, 26 June 1969

Debbie in playpen, March 1969

Up before 8:30. After breakfast Alan and I worked on German and finally caught up with my translation. Then for the rest of the morning I tried to concentrate on German, but there were interruptions. After lunch I got to work in earnest on getting the Fund For Reconciliation letters finished—wrote 24 in all—didn’t want to mimeograph these notes of thanks. Walked with Alan down to Curtis’ to get envelopes. We invited Jim + Becky Bussey over for supper since we were having turkey. Early in day I handed Alan Cradle of Erotica—he’s been pining away over Dianna in Montreal. Alan, Jim + I discussed church, atheism, the term God—I don’t know whether Jim is still an atheist. After Jim + Becky left Debby did some extensive walking around the living room—really doing very well. Late in the evening I finally got back to my desk; prepared funeral service for tomorrow; bathed; off to bed; lights of 12:17.

Friday, 27 June 1969

A hot, humid, slow day. Up about 8:20. Had breakfast, then got to work finishing preparations for the funeral service. Went to the post office to mail all the Fund For Recon. thank-you letters. Interruption in my desk work when the mail man came. Late in the morning—napped, around noon actually. Got up and had a simple lunch; shaved; dressed and left for the church. Arrived about 1:20. Service began at 2:00—very hot and humid; as I was preaching I could feel the drops of perspiration running down my back; went to cemetery for committal service. Home in about 3:00; very soon we went to the beach, were joined later by Allen, who had gone to Brandeis. Returned home, chatted with Alan in the yard; bathed supper—felt very weary; reclined in the living room—spent the whole evening there—Bonnie cutting out cloth—and we all hearing records. This took the whole evening, very enjoyable; off to bed, lights out c. 11:45.

Saturday, 28 June 1969

Another very hot, humid day—about 90° by 11:00 a.m. Up about 9:00—wasn’t a day for accomplishing much. In the morning I managed to get the bulletin done; Allen is trying to lose weight. He did sanding on barbecue grill in the hot sun. After lunch I got to work on my sermon finally. Wrote about half of it, then all four of us drove over to Mal’s in Allen’s car—top down. Got groceries—also bought lawn chair and an air-mattress for use in the water. Shortly after we got home, Alan + I  went to the beach—water very cold—but we got a little used to it—and it was very delightful floating around on my mattress—he has one too. Returned home—bathed, had a salad supper—then returned to the yard in our new chairs—Debby in playpin [sic]. She enjoyed putting her head to the floor of the crib and looking at me back through her legs; lazy evening; worked on service; off to bed, lights out 11:35.

Sunday, 29 June 1969

Up about 8:00; had breakfast, shaved—unhurriedly. Left for church about 9:35. About 40 at the service—I preached on the events of the Conference last week. Home by about 11:45. After lunch I got to work on German after being away from it for a day or two. Worked rather steadily until about 4:00—got almost 2 pp translated. We all went to the beach—had a delightful time floating on my air raft. Alan photographed me on it reading a book! We were home by 6:00—went about fixing supper—which we had about 7:00. By 8:15 I was back with German. During the evening Alan came in (to my study) and we went through my German translation. Debby is getting much better at walking—went from coffee table in living room to the front door. This evening she got a bump on head + a small cut. We don’t know how—but she wasn’t phased by it. Bathed at 10:45; off to bed; Θ, lights out 11:15.

Monday, 16 June 1969

Debby 10 months old. Weary after yesterday’s meeting—in bed until after 9:00; Θ before arising; breakfast—rather slow in getting around to German, but by 10 o’clock, with several interruptions (phone calls, picture taking, etc.) I had made some progress. Lunch, shaved; worked further on German. About 3:30 went to call on Gazella Dodd then at 4:30 to see Daisy Jodrey. Home after 5:00; wrote two letters, one to Dr. Beck and another to the realtor in Cambridge which he recommended. Had supper about 6:30. At 7:30 Jim Bussey and Forrest Clark arrived—we had to talk over steps to be take[n] to help get Fund For Reconciliation money for Gloucester needs. This lasted until about 9:00; then we went down to Patriquins; saw movie of Debby + George Harris. Visited, came home about 11:00; worked on German; bathed; off to bed, lights out 12:07.

Tuesday, 17 June 1969

Passport came in mail. Debby was awake before 5:00 (!) but she was put downstairs. At 9 o’clock I was gotten out of bed by the phone; Alan Federick wanting to use our basement since he had to move his things out immediately. I worked on German some this morning, but by 11:00 was hard at work for Alan—moving his things—via his car—into our basement. Stopped about 12:30 for lunch, and then relaxed shortly. Then back to the loading and unloading. Didn’t finish until almost 4:00. I got back to work on German, but was very weary. Went to the front bedroom and relaxed, fell asleep. Got up about 6:30. We watched news; Bonnie was late getting supper. We didn’t eat until about 7:30. By 8:00 I got back to work on German. Phone call from Homer Orne. About 10:00—shortly before—I called Kent Millard in Newton Upper Falls—re: conference resolution on Vietnam; worked on German until 11:30. Stopped to bathe + have snack; off to bed; lights out 12:16.

Wednesday, 18 June 1969

Up at 8:35 after Θ. Had breakfast—gave Debby her breakfast while Bonnie got some more sleep. Hadn’t shaved yesterday, so began on this right after eating; while in the process Alan Federick came over with his last load of items to go in basement. About mid-morning I got to work on German; lunch about 1:00, then made progress at German. Took a coffee break about 3:30—at which time Ray + Ellen Stoner arrived from Schnectady. While they + Bonnie (+Debby) went to the Christmas Dove, I went to see Mr. + Mrs. Patience. At 5:00 I walked down to end of Bearskin Neck—to Christmas Dove, in search of the girls—but found them at home. Visited with the girls, had super—got back to work on German while they all went down to the Neck; I stayed home with Debby, studied; Debby walked about 3-4 feet (12 tiny steps); listened to Tom Lehrer when girls got home; snack, relaxed, visited, off to bed, lights out 11:53.

Thursday, 19 June 1969

Debbie, May 1969

Up about 8:35—had breakfast, then while Ellen, Kay and Bonnie went off seeing sights, I worked on German. Made progress until about noon. Stopped to shave and have lunch—about 1:15 we left for Dr. Kline’s office for Debby’s regular checkup appointment; Debby is 28½ inches tall, 18 pounds—we were out of his office by 2:15. Came home, Bonnie again went out with Kay + Ellen—I napped. Very briefly around 3:30 Bob Mezzoff (?) + his wife dropped in to see the parsonage; they served here several years ago; back to German for a while. When Kay + Ellen came back, we showed them our slides—had supper around 6:30. They left by 7:00. We watched President Nixon’s new conference. Just a few minutes after this was over, much to our surprise, Paul + Marty arrived. Spent the evening visiting—showing slides; bathed about 11:00. German—off to bed; lights out 11:55.

Friday, 20 June 1969

Up not too long after 8:00; we all got up and just sat around talking for a while. At nine I went to the store for bread, then we had breakfast. After break [?] I had to tend to doing the bulletin and packing. The others went out for a walk around town. I went to the church briefly, came home, worked at my desk. Around noon shaved, the others returned, we had lunch. About 1:30 they then left for Gloucester to see Busseys. I got ready to go, then worked on German until 3 o’clock when the Ornes came for me. We drove to Natick—Fisk Memorial Church. Registered, chatted with friends—executive session got under way about 5:15—over around 6:00. We had supper at a huge hall of a girl’s school near the church. Evening session 8:00—not very thrilling; over by 9:30. Ornes brought me to the home where I’m staying; bathed, off to bed, lights out 11:41.

Saturday, 21 June 1969

Up about 7:30, shaved, had small breakfast; Mr. McEwan drove me to the church—arrived about 8:30. Nothing very exciting at the morning session; had lunch with George Collis; in the morning there was some discussion among those of us pushing for a stronger Vietnam resolution. The afternoon session was likewise rather dull. At one point Jim Bussey, Dr. Uhlinger + I had an extended chat about Forrest Clark and Riverdale Church. Uhlinger indicated that an interim pastor might serve Rockport and that I could return. Bussey and I talked further—we walked to the lunch hall together—and back. After supper we maneuvered further re: the Vietnam resolution, but the evening session was devoted entirely to a resolution of black requests to the conference. Received with resistance—the older church structure fought it. The session finally ended before 11:30. Ornes brought be out to McEwans; bathed; relaxed, lights out 12:38.

Sunday, 22 June 1969

Up at 8:30. Shaved, had breakfast; about 10 o’clock we left for the church—Mr. McEwan drove me. Didn’t sit in the service with anyone I knew; Bishop Mathew’s sermon was not terribly profound or original—but it was interesting, and not the least bit dull. After service went with Busseys and some others for lunch in Framingham at a shopping center. After lunch goofed off. Came back to church; I very much wanted to nap, but of course couldn’t. The ordination service was at 3:30—lasted until 5:00—it too was interesting. Who knows when I’ll go through the Elders process? After the service I joined the Ornes and we went to the Walnut High School for supper—which wasn’t too good. After supper we wandered back to the church. A suggested business meeting was not held, so I left, since I didn’t care to attend the retirement service; Kent Millard drove me to my room; relaxed, visited with the McEwans in the evening; lights out 11:15.

Dear David, Bonnie and Debbie,

I am sending some vitamins for Debbie. Dad brought some he acquired from a salesman yesterday.

Have been so busy since you left, I didn’t even get a card off to you for your anniversary. I presume you arrived back home safely – how would we know since we have not had a word from you. By the way, send me Patriquins’ address. I want to write her a note and there was not a return on her envelope and I don’t remember the name of the street or their house number.

We really had about as good a day as any so far for our celebration on the 25th. Last evening we had a hard rain – I was in the drug store at Wabash Village when it began to rain – without benefit of an umbrella. We had had the air conditioners on all day and this morning the temperature was 60°. I had to make a trip to town and wore a wool suit and light coat. I saw Sandy Corbin this morning – she brought me a box from LeBeau’s. He gave me quite a discount on the gift the people from Trinity are giving the Morin’s for their 25th wedding anniversary. Sandy is getting married July 5th. She is going into the Lutheran church and her boy – I should say fiancé is from Hobart, Indiana, and the wedding is going to be held in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hobart. I asked her this morning if they had selected their silver and they have – Gorham sterling – the most expensive on can buy. Also very expensive china, but surprisingly, Fostoria crystal. I looked at sterling when we thought about buying something for the Morin anniversary and found that sterling costs almost four times as much as plated silver. I asked Sandy what they have in the their sterling and she said, “So far not one piece.” One place setting costs about $50.00 so I think I won’t get them a place setting. I will probably get them a piece or two or something in crystal.

The last time we were in Kentland we saw the Janssens and Garnette was telling Dad that LaVanche T. brought a young man home with her that did not suit her Dad and he said you either get rid of him, or I will cut you off without a penny – which he did because she wouldn’t. She is staying in Colorado Springs and has two jobs. That must be hard on someone like that who has always had the best of everything. I haven’t seen Dorothy for a long time, so have no idea how she is taking it. She was so wrapped up in their child, I can imagine it is hard on her.

Just had a letter from Dr. Hugh Lormor telling me the person to write to in Karachi for a look at things while we are there. He also said he was sure the McGraws would give us a good tour of Penang. He said he was interested to know that I am Bonnie McGraw’s mother-in-law.

Let us hear from you – we are interested to know how your plans are progressing. We met a man from Stuttgart one evening this week – he is visiting here with his son – and he has invited us to visit with him while there. I think we will spend more time in Germany than in Switzerland this time.

Debbie made quite a hit with the Kentland people. I gave a redwood planter to Dad for Father’s Day. He wanted to transplant the orange tree I had by the kitchen sink. He was going to put in something so had to give him his gift yesterday.

Monday, 9 June 1969

Up about 9:00. Had breakfast, was preparing to work on German, phone call from Harold Cramer’s office—he could see us this morning instead of at 2:00. So we got ready to go (shaved, e.g.) and left here about 10:30. Arrived at 581 Boylston about 11:40. Saw Cramer about insurance with the conference; after this we stop briefly at Cokesbury,[1] then went to the Open Latch for lunch; fed Debby there. Then went to BU to check on a few details; then drove to Government Center. Went to the JFK building to apply for passports. Didn’t take long. We were on way home by 2:30.  We stopped in Beverly to see about buying VW in Luxembourg [???]. We were home by 3:45. Relaxed, tried to nap briefly after reading mail. Read for a while in the book I got at Cokesbury: The Religion Business. Fixed supper. By 8:00 was at my desk working on German. Continued, with one break until about 11:00; bathed; off to bed; lights out 12:00.

Tuesday, 10 June 1969

Θ  before arising shortly after 8:00;  big breakfast, then got to the yard work—spent the morning mowing and clipping. Finished mowing—with one break—about 10:30. Then begin clipping the hedge around the front door. Was done with this by noon. Fixed lunch after going to the store for bread + milk. After lunch stretched out for a while; bushed after all the physical exertion. Actually slept a little. Shaved after getting up. Then we all went for a walk. The ocean was almost calm today and a very beautiful blue—so we went walking along the beach, took pictures. Stopped to see Kay—she came up to the parsonage to see the kittens. From 3:30–5:00 I worked on German. 5:00-6:30  worked on German with Allen at his place; supper; 7:30-8:00 wrote letter to Levon King; 8:00-9:00 visited with Willard Trafton at his home re: his mother’s funeral tomorrow; 9:00-11:00 worked on German; bathed; off to bed, lights out 12:05.

Wednesday, 11 June 1969

A full day; up at 8:00, had breakfast and got to work on German. Kept at it until about 10:30. Waited for the mail man, who brought the slides we’ve been hoping for. I set about sorting them—as well as all the vacation slides. Had lunch shaved, dressed. At 2 o’clock went to the Beach Grove Cemetery to do the committal service for Mrs. Trafton. Home by 2:10—worked further on sorting + numbering the slides, which turned out to be a major project—wasn’t done until about 4:30. Relaxed—read Newsweek. Worked on helping with supper, making cornbread and brownies. Bob and Nancy Peek arrived about 6:30. They had supper with us then we walked down to the end of Bear Skin Neck, then came back home; they left for home and we went to the Patriquins.  Gamages came over too—we showed all of our vacation slides—over 250. Enjoyed”mug-ups”—left for home about 11:15. Bathed, off to bed, lights out 12:12.

Thursday, 12 June 1969

Debby, Rockport, 1969

I was surprised to wake up and find it 9 o’clock; got up, had breakfast and got to work on German—my main concern for the day—spent all morning on it with only a short break when the mail man arrived. Stopped for lunch about 12:30. Shaved after lunch, then went down to the church to change the wayside pulpit. Got back to German after 2:00—worked until 4:00, then went down to the church again to see Winnie Gamage + Florence Lilya [?]—who will be our organist Sunday. 4:15 to 6:30 worked on German. Stopped for supper. 7:30 went back to the German to finish the paragraph I was working on; did about 3½ pp. today. We all went for a walk then (Debby on my back) along front beach. Didn’t stay out too long—too many mosquitoes.  We stopped at Patriquins about 9:00. Drue and Sully came in as we were leaving about 10:00; they came up to the parsonage with us to hear Tom Lehrer;[2] left c. 11:00; bathed; off to bed 11:50.

Friday, 13 June 1969

Woke up at 5:00 with very stiff and painful muscles high in the back + neck. Got back to sleep but c. 8:00 Bonnie got me heating pad + Ben Gay. Got up, had breakfast, went to work on German—but back still bothering me. About mid-morning Bonnie gave me an excruciating back rub, and that seem to cure it. Worked on German until I reached my stopping point about 1 o’clock. We had lunch, then I went to work on my sermon. It was mostly done by 3:00—at which time we all went over to Mals [???]—got some swim suits, and some groceries. Came home and then went to the beach—very cold—Debby cried. Bonnie went all the way in for a few seconds, but not I. We were back home by 5:30. Alan Federick arrived + we transplanted tree from Mrs. Parodis’  yard to ours. Supper about 6:30. Then worked on staking the tree. About dusk came in,  relaxed, bathed c. 10:00; to bed, Θ+ lights out 11:30.

Saturday, 14 June 1969

Up not too long after 8:00; had breakfast, then about 9:00—after watering the tree—got to work on German—worked with a few interruptions until after 12:00—reached the point I had set. After lunch I got the bulletins typed and run off. From about 12:00 until 3:30 I visited with the Hannibals at their home. I came home, chatted briefly with Becky Bussey who was just leaving, then went back to work in German—on a lesson in the grammar book—fell asleep at one point, but worked until about 6:00, then stopped to get supper + bake brownies. Supper was over at 7:30—Alan Federick came over about 7:45—we worked on German until about 9:00, then stopped for dessert—then viewed slides until about 10:30—at which time Alan went home. I busied myself then finishing up work on the service; bathed; off to bed; lights out 1 AM.

Sunday, 15 June 1969

Up about 7:30. Breakfast, shaved, dressed. Worked on German for about a half-hour—left for church bout 9:30. 28 in attendance—preached on worship. After service we showed the kittens to Dave, Winnie, etc. I went over to Alan Federicks to pick up my German grammar book. Had lunch about 12 o’clock. Left about 12:40 for Wesley Church in Gloucester. [This is incorrect: it was Worcester, see below.] Arrived there about 2:45. Worship began about 3:15 after brief opening session. Charlie Whitford went to the social concerns workshop with me. The first session, which was rather dull, lasted until 5:15—we had supper—Charlie + I ate together; chatted for a while with Bob Metzof (?) on the steps of the church. 6:15 session came to order again. Vietnam resolution approved which is objectionable. Kent Millard + I plan to organize to present an alternative proposal. Left Worcester after 8:00; home in Rockport by 10:05; relaxed, bathed, off to bed; lights out 11:35.

Monday, 2 June 1969

Debby took her first step this evening at Patriquins.  Debby was awake at 6:30, but didn’t protest too much being ignored and till 8:30—when I finally got up. I spent my morning working on the title slide and preparing for the Board of Ministry interview. Ate about 11 o’clock and shaved. Left for Needham about 12:15—arrived at Carter Memorial Church at 1:20. They were running behind. They didn’t see me until 2:30. They voted not to ordain Me Elder—rather will accept me on probation from S. Indiana conference. I was home—rather disappointed—by 4:15. Went to work again on the slide. In the late afternoon and evening Bonnie and I began to realize how tired we are from the vacation. We fixed supper—I made corn-bread. But the early evening was lethargic; I finished the slide; we went for a walk—stopped at the Patriquins; home by 10:30; bathed; off to bed; lights out, Θ+

Tuesday, 3 June 1969

Up about 8:30. After a small breakfast my attention for most of the day was on my desk and putting it in order. In the morning I also typed up the minutes of the Sunday evening C.A.M.P. meeting. Bonnie went shopping in the afternoon after we had lunch; I stayed home with Debbie; she wandered around tirelessly in the bedroom while I work in my study. She stood alone today for 5-10  seconds. At four o’clock I went to the church to see the man who will be our new organist; Winnie Gamage was there too.  Then Bonnie + Debby + I drove over to Ornes—but they weren’t back from vacation yet. So we dropped in to see Hazle +  Barbara Lord. We were home by six; had supper, watched some TV, played with Debby. In the evening I went back to work at my desk. At 9:00 watched NBC news program. Bonnie gave me a HAIRCUT; worked on cleaning out my file; bathed; off to bed; lights out 11:41.

Wednesday, 4 June 1969

Up about 9:00, had a big breakfast; called Bishop Mueller’s office in Indianapolis re: transfer of membership to NE Conference. Then I had to call Bishop Mathews office in Boston. Worked at desk after going to post office with letter for Mueller. After mail came I began mowing, stopped to eat about 12:30. Went back to the mowing—a major job since the grass was pretty tall. Finished at about 3:00. Shaved, got cleaned up. We all went over to Gloucester for passport photos; took drive around Rockport; stopped to see the Ornes who are just back from vacation. Home about 5:30. Supper, TV; worked in yard. At 8:00 the Busseys came over—we visited. At 9:00 I took the VW over to Roy Lee. Sue drove me home. We saw some of the Bussey’s slides, then we showed them ours—including those of vacation. They left about 11:30 – off to bed; lights out c. 12.

The kittens, 1969

Θ  before arising at 9:00. A slow morning; after a small breakfast did more puttering around my desk. Today is one of my main projects was the removal of a stump out in the yard. I worked at it off and on during the day with both fire and chopping. The mail man brought two more boxes of slides—we viewed them immediately, and then ate a good lunch. After lunch I worked further in my study and photographed the kittens. In mid-afternoon Allen Federick came over to vacuum his car and did more chopping on the stump; we had tea +  discussed theology. He left before supper. We had our supper, and relaxed; I went to the post office with a roll of film and to the store for milk. We discussed plans for Europe. About 9:00 we went down to Patriquins to watch the movie which we got back today with the slides; we came home about 10:30. Bathed; off to bed, lights out 11:50.

Friday, 6 June 1969

Up about 9:00; tried to work after breakfast on my sermon, but didn’t have much luck. Mail man came with another box of slides—which I projected—Bonnie was off doing dry cleaning. I then started [to] read I. F. Stone, what should also come. [1] Out of the blue Bob Peek drove up—his wife still in school. He stayed for lunch. Had to leave around 1:00. I shaved, went to the church to change the wayside pulpit, home again got to work on the sermon—made progress. Bonnie went on errands to Gloucester (picked up passport photos), after finishing most of the sermon I napped. Got up about 5:30, and started on preparations for supper. Bonnie arrived home, we had supper. Joseph + Dorothy Stoner arrived about 7:20. We visited and after dark showed our vacation slides. This was over about 10:00; snack; worked more on this sermon; off to bed; lights out 11:24.

Saturday, 7 June 1969

Off about 9:00. A rather lethargic day. Finished my sermon and did the bulletin in the morning. Also gave attention off and on to the stump—trying to set it on fire. Bonnie and Mrs. Stoner went off shopping. I got lunch—made corn bread. After lunch worked on the mower—Jim Bussey came over to borrow it. About 3:15 I went down to T wharf to meet Mr. Stoner on the boat (Winner III [???])  He had 3 big codfish (10,11, and 15 lbs.) he gave us one—filleted it for us. We had it for supper. The Stoners left about 5:20—we couldn’t persuade them to stay another day. Took pictures of his fish when we got back here to the house. Bonnie + I—as well as Debby napped after they left. I was up about 6:15—fixed supper—after supper I worked on the service, chatted briefly with Jim when he brought in mower back. Straightened up my desk after the service was all ready; surveyed German to be done; bathed, to bed lights out 12. Θ+

Sunday, 8 June 1969

Up about 8:00. Had breakfast, shaved, dressed. Left for the church about 9:30. Bonnie took Debby to the Lords for the morning since Vicky is at camp. Only about 30 in church; preached on the generation gap. After church we changed clothes and joined Alan Federick in his yard—Bonnie went for Debby. About noon we came home for lunch; I napped until about 2:30. At 3:00 went to the Den Mar nursing home to conduct service. Was home by 3:50. Unenthusiastically I set to work on German. Took a break after a while and played with Debby. We had supper around 6:00. I went to the church to see Jim Tanner about preaching for me 2 weeks hence. Came home, back to work on German. At 8:30 I went for a walk on Bear Skin Neck, took pictures. I was home, working on German again by 9:15. Knocked off after a while for a snack; bathed;  off to bed, lights out 11:55.

Monday, 26 May 1969

To my surprise I found myself still in bed at 10 o’clock. Debby had slept late too. We didn’t move too fast—spent the rest of the morning packing. Had lunch when Dad got home at 11:45—Mother fixed steak for us. Dad had time only for lunch—then was called back to the health center for an emergency. We finished packing—and watched the splashdown of Apollo 10. We finally left W. Laf. about 1:30. We got to Bloomington about 4:00. Just drove around, walked, looked at the new library and at Wright Quad.[1] Left Bloomington about 5:00. On the way to Spring Mill stopped–photograph limestone quarry. We got into the park + pitched our tent about 7:00. After feeding Debby and having our own supper we drove around the park. We didn’t do much walking—since Debby was getting tired. Came back to the tent and got to bed around 10. Θ

Tuesday, 27 May 1969

Up about 6:30. Rather chilly, but very clear. We were able to get dressed and everyone fed with no discomfort. Our main concern in the morning was to see the Old Village—swarming with kids. Before this excursion we had to go into the town of Mitchell to have the brakes checked. We came back to the tent after seeing the village—had lunch, tried to nap briefly; but [at] 3:00 we were out sightseeing again. We went hiking and visiting caves—Donaldson Cave was the most spectacular. After this we came back to the tent; I shaved; we all took bathers.[sic] Bonnie fed Debby, then we went to the Spring Mill Inn for supper—not an extraordinary meal—and a very busy waitress. Stopped briefly at Lake—back to tent; Debby to bed; chatted with neighbors, off to bed by 9:45. Θ

Wednesday, 28 May 1969

Up about 7:00. We busied ourselves getting ready to leave—feeding, packing, etc. We were finally on the road a little after 9:00. Stopped in Mitchell to get some throat tablets—I was getting a sore throat. We then got on the road again, and pulled into Centerville about 1:00. I was very hungry, so I ate too much—so had to nap for a while after eating! In the afternoon Bonnie and I went over to grandpa’s harness shop—took several pictures. Also looked at some campers outside his shop—for sale by the boating shop next door. Late in the afternoon I went to the laundromat at the west of Centerville—took about an hour. We had supper when I got home; watched news; went over to Bonnie’s parents’ house on Plum street, got rocking chair out of attic; went to grocery; home, showed slides, off to bed after bathing—about 11:00.

David with Debby, Spring 1969

Up at about 6:30—had breakfast, shaved, loaded the car—left Centerville after 9:00, but stop in Richmond to buy film—so we didn’t get into Ohio until about 10:00. But we were to the other side of Columbus by 12:00. Stopped for lunch at the first rest area east of Columbus. We were on the road again by 1:00.  Made good time—arrived in Wheeling, W.V., about 3:00. Stopped at the Fostoria Glass outlet, bought one piece; headed on to Pittsburgh—arrived at Lee and Mary [???] apartment about 5:00. Unloaded the car; had supper. Visited. About 8:00 we all went out to see the city. Drove to several places, especially to outlook points. Took some pictures. About 10:00 we came back to the apartment. We visited, then showed a few of our slides to show the difference between instamatic camera + ours. Bathed; off to bed about 12:30.

Friday, 30 May 1969

Up about 7:00. Breakfast, shaved, packed—we left the Weber’s apartment after 9:00. We were away from Pittsburgh by 10:00—but it was a long tiring drive today. Didn’t get hot until after noon; we went to Exit 20 on the Penn. Turnpike, and much of that highway is in poor condition. At exit 20 we left the turnpike to get Route 30 to go through the Penn. Dutch country. Unfortunately we were in too much of a hurry to see the area properly, but we did get some pictures. We pushed on toward Philadelphia—our destination: the home of dad’s cousin, Joyce FitzRandolph. She had mailed directions to us, so we had no trouble finding her house—arrived there about 6:35. Unloaded the car, fed Debby, then sat down to supper ourselves. We had a very pleasant evening together, discussing Europe and the family tree. Also took pictures; bathed about 11:00, off to bed about [blank].

Saturday, 31 May 1969

5th anniversary  Up shortly after 7:00; packed, shaved, breakfast, loaded the car. We left Joyce’s place about 9:00; made relatively good time. We had no trouble whatever getting through New York City. By noon and we were well north of the city. Stopped for our lunch in Connecticut. We had good traveling weather, and made good time. We arrived here in Rockport just a few minutes before 5:00. Unloaded car, took Virginia home, went to the Anchor Inn to get clam plates, brought them home; we ate supper while ploughing through the pile of mail. Phil Parker came over at 7:00 to discuss Children’s Day service for tomorrow; when he left we looked at the slides which have arrived. After this I worked on the bulletin; 9:30 went to Patriquins; had to break in the house through cellar—front door jammed; took photos of the moon; bathed; off to bed, lights out 12:30.

Sunday, 1 June 1969

Up about 7:30. Had to make final preparations for church. Allen called. Small breakfast, shaved—after a trip to the church about 8:00 to change wayside pulpit. Returned to the church about 9:30. Today was Children’s Sunday, so I had very little to do in the service. We began 10 o’clock service today. Home by 11:15. Fixed lunch after going for bread and milk. After lunch drew with red marker on the map the course of our trip. Was very sleepy, weary. So I napped most of the afternoon. Didn’t get up until about 5:00 and felt pretty groggy. Worked on photographing the map I have marked, then began work on the “title slide”  for the slides of the trip to Indiana. Ate about 6:00. At 7:00 I had to go to Riverdale for C.A.M.P. meeting. This was over before 9:30. Took Gladys Haskell home and we chatted in the car for quite a while; stopped at the church, youth still meeting; came home; viewed slides; bathed; off to bed; lights out c. 12.

Monday, 19 May 1969

Up about 7:30. Spent the morning getting ready for the trip—had to write some letters, straighten up my desk. Alan Federick brought his parents over to say good-bye; wrote to Cambridge re: apartment. Virginia Bate was around most of the morning. Had lunch about 10:30. Shaved. We finally were ready to go about one o’clock. Strong winds +  our car-top carrier kept our speed low; we stopped 2 or 3 times. In general Debbie traveled well—didn’t get car-sick. We arrived at Stoners in Schnectady at 6:15—230 miles from home. Good weather—mostly cloudy but very little rain. We had supper, Mr. Stoner and I went for groceries. In the evening we showed slides, saw Stoner movies—sat around and visited. Very weary; looked at Niagara folders; bathed, off to bed; lights out about 11:30. θ+

Tuesday, 20 May 1969

Up at 7:30. Had breakfast—loaded the car—heavy rain falling when we got up—kindly let up when we were loading the car. We finally got off at about 9:20. We drove through quite a bit of rain stopped several times for picture taking—including a shot of the site of the old Erie Canal locks. We ate lunch at a pleasant park along the road. We got to Buffalo about 4:30. Came directly to the camping ground: Miller’s Creek. Only 2 or 3 other campers in the area.  We ate supper in the car, then about 7:00 head up on the road to see the Falls—several miles away the mist from the Horseshoe Falls was visible. We strolled around, drove around, took pictures—we found the Falls very spectacular—Debby seemed astounded by the Falls. Our drive ended about 9:00 back at the Falls; we took pictures of the illuminated falls; back at the campsite about 10:00—prepared for bed; this is written by auto headlight lights out at 10:40.

Wednesday 21 May 1969

Up at 6:15! Unfortunately a chilly morning. After breakfast we broke camp and got everything in the car, loaded, packed by about 8:30. Then got on the road back to Niagara. Mist was blowing from the horseshoe falls across the road—impossible to get good pictures. But we found a lot to photograph. Saw the replicas of the crown jewels. Strolled around the gardens. We had lunch on the grass in the sun near Niagara glen,  headed toward Detroit—stopped to see the locks at St. Catherine. Unfortunately took slow rt. 8 through Hamilton to get to 401. Got there about 4:00—then straight through to Detroit—arrived about 7:45 our time (6:45 theirs),  at the Kings [1];  had supper; visited; Mattijane’s brother + wife are here with 2 kids—a real madhouse altogether. Later in the evening showed how our slides;  11 o’clock saw moon TV pictures;  bathed off to bed, lights out 1:12.

The Yegerlehner Clan, Roscoe and Gladys’ anniversary weekend, May 1969

Up about 9:00. Had a big breakfast—all the household had breakfast together—quite a gathering. Spent the morning getting the car loaded—and shaved. We finally got on the road to Gary about 11:30—somewhat later then we had hoped. A cold, overcast day. But we were able to make a good speed—with the help of huge trucks which drew us along. We arrived in Gary at Paul + Marty’s shortly after 5:00. We unloaded the car, then had supper. After supper watched CBS news—Apollo 10 orbiting the moon. After this we all got in Paul + Marty’s car and drove to the ditch where their boat is docked. We spent about an hour or so on the water—but didn’t go on to Lake Michigan—too rough. Came home, had a snack, then set up the projector—we showed them our slides. They are going through a “boat” stage— + were very interested in some of the slides; off to bed, lights out 11:45.

Friday, 23 May 1969

Forget what time we got up. The morning was not rushed—rather leisurely—sat around and talked; Paul + Marty didn’t go to school—both of them weren’t feeling very well.  The morning seemed to go fast; we got the car loaded and then got on the road about noon. Arrived in Kentland at Mrs. Myers’ apartment about 1:30—an hour earlier Kentland time.  We stayed until after 5:00—Mrs. Krull, Mrs. Johnson, and Mrs. Hufty came by to see Debby. We got on the road again and arrived at the folks in W. Lafayette about 5:40. Unloaded the car after hurriedly looking at the box of slides which had arrived. Had supper; in the evening we just relaxed—watched a comic movie on TV. I got several pictures of the raccoons as they came begging + were fed—Al + Gwydelyn. Ran the slides through the projector; off to bed; lights out 12:07.

Saturday, 24 May 1969

Up at about 9:40—it was good to sleep so late. One of the first things to be done was a trip to the grocery store for baby food; then I went down into the ravine behind the folks’ home to take pictures. A very sunny, warm day. It was a day of just relaxation;  Bob + Lea + John arrived for lunch. In the afternoon I made a trip for film + postcards—wrote postcards to people in Rockport—had an opportunity for chatting with Bob and John. For supper we ate out on the patio—a delightful meal. Debby was in her playpen; Lea was pretty occupied with Debby; Lea had her third miscarriage last week. After supper we watched TV—some inane programs, but then The Miracle Worker came on—the story of Annie Sullivan and Helen Keller. During the movie we saw a telecast from Apollo 10 at hundred at 169,000 miles from Earth; after movie we showed our slides; bathed; off to bed; lights out 12:54.

Sunday 25 May 1969

Up about 7:30. Shaved; dressed; mother, father, John, Bonnie + I went to the 9 o’clock service at the Trinity Methodist. Home around 10:00. Relatives began arriving: Floyd + Ruth came after Bob, Lea, John; Mark + Family; Alma Hubbel. We had lunch on the patio—a nice day. Uncle Clarence + family were here for a short time. Posed for pictures—I was the photographer. We spent the afternoon lounging around, talking, relaxing. Bob, Lea + John were still here for supper; after supper I climbed down into the ravine with Dad. Watched TV—utterly slummed. During the evening we called Joyce Fitz-Randolph in New Jersey to arrange to stay with her on Friday night. This has been a very relaxing day—we managed to avoid feuding over politics. But also rather tiring; off to bathe about 11 o’clock. θ+ lights out before midnight.

Monday, 12 May 1969

Up about 8:30. Had breakfast. My main concern today was to get letters written—wrote to the folks, Mrs. Myers, David Watson, Gary Myers [1], Harrell Beck. Had lunch around 1 o’clock. In mid-afternoon we all three went down to the Ross Candle shop on Bear Skin Neck and bought two swirl candles for the blue candlesticks that Bonnie got for Mother’s Day. Bonnie went to Gloucester shopping—I went with Debby to call on Gracie Harris. We got home about 4:30—then both of us napped. At 5:30 I got up, fixed supper. Bonnie got home shortly after 6:00, just as I was finishing with feeding Debby. After supper we went to Crowells—to visit and pick up his trailer for hauling debris tomorrow. Home about 9:00. I photographed the candles. We then did some planning for the Indiana trip—I wrote to Paul + Marty + to Kings; bathed; off to bed; lights out 12:40.

Tuesday, 13 May 1969

Up at  8:45 set up + wetted down our tent—after a big breakfast, got to the main project of the morning:  going to the dump. Loaded the trash burner onto the trailer, Plus trash, cans, etc. Was home from the dump by 11:00.  Went to work in my study—had to type post-cards handle letter. Bonnie was hard at work sewing—so I got lunch and fed Debby. Went to the bank for travelers checks + cash—nap when I got home—about 3:30 we went to Gloucester—Took the lawn mower to Bussey’s—Roger Cressy will look at it. Then we went shopping—buy groceries and supplies for camping next week.  Stopped at Crowells on the way home to leave the trailer; home shortly before 6:00. After supper just relaxed—I have worked to do, let’s felt in the mood just to relax—read more in Giotto.  Bathed about 10:00.  Read in bed; θ, lights out at 11:30.

Wednesday, 14 May 1969

Took 14 pictures of flowers + Rockport. Up about 8:15. Breakfast, worked at my desk, sorting, filing, straightening up. Overcast outside, showery—put the tent out again. Called in order to Sears for spare bulb for projector and water-proofing compound for  the tent. Mail man brought slides and pictures, which we stopped to look at. After lunch, shaved, Homer Orne + I went to call on Miss Ingles—prospective organist. Then stopped at Emma Laste’s to photograph her flower bank. Then to Gloucester to pick up the lawn mower. Back home; Bonnie, Debby + I drove over to Pigeon Cove to photograph a tree—home again, I napped. Up at 5:30. Made out an order for bulletins, fixed supper. 7:30-8:30 watched Jacques Costeau program on the sea. Worked at desk briefly; at 9:00—shortly after we went down to the Patriquins to show our slides; home just before 11:00 to watch news—Nixon’s proposal for Vietnam peace; off to read in bed; lights out 12:16.

Debby and the family cat, 1969

Kittens born! Up shortly before 9:00; had breakfast, then got to mowing. About 10:00 Homer + Sarah came over to leave some things since they’re going on vacation. Returned to mowing about 11:00—stopped to read mail—Jim Bussey came over to get jugs of water. Back to mowing; finished about 12:30. Had lunch. Fatigued. Not used to physical exertion! Napped briefly—or at least tried to. Worked for a while on my Bible Class lesson: Joel. Napped. About 3:00 I went to pay a call on Sarah Wilton—met Mrs. Green—a young woman, articulate, well read, but confessed to be a fundamentalist. Home again before 5:00. Began tearing down fence in yard—one section; worked on Joel. Had supper (fixed it too)—after 7:30, worked briefly on the fence—about 7:45 discovered the cat in the closet—with 3 kittens. 8:00-9:00 Bible class—not really—only 2 showed up: Virginia + Hazel Brady. Worked on sermon; bathed; off to bed; lights out at 12:18.

Friday, 16 May 1969

Θ before arising at 8:45. Had breakfast; my first concern of the day was to get the marriage ceremony of Pat + Gary Holmes typed. This took most of the morning; time out to read the mail. Around noon—after Bonnie had finished Debby’s new dress, we all went out into the yard for picture taking—Debby 9 months old today. Then we fixed lunch; shaved; tried unsuccessfully to turn off heater in VW. We then set about getting ready to go to Boston. Left at 3:00. Arrived at BU before 4:00. Several errands to tend to. Found out my grades: Isaiah, A, Archaeology + Messiah, A-, which was a disappointment. Saw Drs. Richardson + [???: Luccoch ???] briefly. Bonnie went to Sears to pick up projector bulb and water proofing for tent. At 6:00 we stopped in briefly to see Larry Burton. At 6:30 were at Pat + Gary’s apartment. Had supper + visit. Headed home about 10:30. Arrived about 11:30. The cat left her young for the first time; bathed; off to bed; lights out 12:56.

Saturday, 17 May 1969

(Cat went outside today for first time since delivering.) Slept late—not up until about 9:30. Had breakfast, then got to work to water-proof the tent. Saw Alan Fedrick in his parking lot, chatted with him; he appears to be ready to buy a house. Worked on the tent until about 2:00—with time out for lunch. After finishing the tent (one coat, outside + inside), finished taking up the part of the tent in the yard we didn’t want. Then stopped to shave and bathe. About 4:00 Bonnie, Debby + I went shopping; bought film and Bermuda shorts. Got home about 5:30.  I went over to see the Hannibals since we’ll be away next Saturday. Home about 6:30; watched the news—had supper. After supper had to get to work again on the sermon. Finished the sermon, then did the bulletins, made phone calls (earlier); took a break during writing sermon to play with Debby—a fast crawler these days. Finally finished on the service about 12:20.  Off to bed; lights out 12:32.

Sunday, 18 May 1969

Up at 6:00 a.m.—ugh! Had to be at Riverdale Church at 7:00 for communion service—helped Forrest Clark and Jim Bussey serve. Home by about 9:00 after the breakfast. Was able to relax for a while. Alan Federick arrived with his car to help get the record player to church. Preached in Isaiah 63:7-64:11—not over 40 in church. Home in time to see the launch of Apollo 10. About 1:00 we went to the Patriquins for lunch. So drowsy afterward. Came home about 3:00 for a conference with Jim Tanner about next Sunday’s worship. Tried to nap between 4:00 and 5:00 but not much luck. At 5:00 had a meeting of Joint Youth Steering com. at the church. Lasted until 6:30. Spent the evening after supper doing a number of things to prepare for the trip—packing, working on car, desk work, bulletin for next Sunday; about 11:30 bathed; off to bed; lights out 12:00.

Monday, 5 May 1969

Up by 8:30—but had a headache—had breakfast, took aspirin—but the headache lingered. I didn’t get much done in the morning—my head was bothering me too much. But I did make some progress in cleaning my desk, filing. We had lunch about 1:00, shaved, about 1:45 I got up to Hannibals, at 2:30 I went to see Bertha Wicky to talk about the current turmoil in the church—didn’t leave there utnil almost 4:00. Came home; books had arrived from Cokesbury, Gideon, by Pritchard—for the Bible class to give to Helen Evarts. I took it over to her home—saw her briefly—very ill. Helped Bonnie with supper; called Dr. Richardson to have him send me a map to his home for Wed. evening. About 6:30 we took Debby to Patriquins, then headed to Lawrence to see the movie, Lion in Winter—back to Patriquins by 11:20; home; snacked; bathed; off to bed; lights out 11:55.

Tuesday, 6 May 1969

Up about 9:30. Breakfast; spent the morning making a door for the top of the stairway (back) to prevent Debby from falling down stairs on way from bedroom to Bonnie’s sewing room. This was finished by about 12:30 or so. Had lunch after shaving. Went calling; saw Mrs. Parsons, Mrs. Martin, Mrs. Leary, Anna + Alvina—also Virginia Bate. Home about 5:30. Had supper; typed stencil of proposed letter + questionnaire for Admin. Board approval. Picked up Hazle Lord for baby sitting about 7:00, went to the church, trustees meeting briefly at 7:15—then the Administrative Board meeting at 7:30. A divisive meeting—I was again attacked + insulted by Alice Marr. Quite an uproar. Announced at the beginning of my report that we’re moving to England; meeting broke up about 9:30. After we got home, we went to the Patriquins; Winnie Gamage was there. Stayed to about 11:15; home again;bathed; off to bed; 12:20.

Wednesday, 7 May 1969

Don’t recall when we got up—much of the day was very blah. After breakfast I set out to get the lawn mowed. Got the mower out of the basement. Changed oil, cleaned, put in new gas—but wouldn’t start. Went + bought new spark plug but still wouldn’t work. We had a late lunch—after which I napped. Up about 3:00. Typed stencils for the letter and questionnaire to be sent. Then got ready to go. About 4:30 we left, took Debby to Busseys for the evening, then drove to Newton to Dr. Richardson’s for supper. Arrived about 6:30—left about 10:00. We had an enjoyable supper and socializing with class members and wives. We played a game of probe [1] with Les + Jeannie [?] Strong. We got to Busseys about 11:00, home by 11:30. Debby didn’t awake on way home. Bathed, off to bed; lights out 12:30.

Up at 8:00. No breakfast; immediately did the mimeographing. This was finished by 8:45. Then had to call Emma Last to be organist. Went on errands—Ornes, post office, to see Jean Crowell at the Bank. Got gas, home about 10:15. We got ready to go; left about 10:45. Arrived in Avon at 12:10. Went 128 around Boston to the west. The object of the visit is to relax. In the afternoon played cards and napped. We had supper at 5:00. Relaxed; Grandma’s friend Merle and husband Tom came over about 6:40. We watched TV and visited; then we showed them our slides. We didn’t want to have to spend an evening in conversation with them—so we decided that slides were the best preoccuption. They left about 9:00. Debby was still going—has had little nap today; finally asleep by 10:00. Bathed; off to bed; lights out 10:52.

Friday, 9 May 1969

A do-nothing day. Up at 9:00; had breakfast. Finally got around to shaving—just sat around in the morning. After lunch, relaxed, read, about mid-afternoon Bonnie and I went shopping. At Sears I got a new pair of casual shoes—very comfortable. Then at Kings I bought a new pair of slacks—green plaid, and a belt. Several other items; we got back to Grandma’s about 4:45. I called BU to renew a book. About 5:00 we had supper. Then watched TV. At 7:30 we began to get ready to go. Left Avon at 8:00—went to the west 128 route around Boston—75 miles to Rockport; we were home by 9:20. Our cat was desperate for attention—and to get outside. But we didn’t allow her out. Got everything in + put away; called Pat + Gary Holmes—they were expecting us this evening; read, relaxed, bathed; off to bed; lights out 11:45. θ+

Saturday, 10 May 1969

Up with Debby by 8:30. Bonnie stayed in bed—didn’t get downstairs until almost 11:00. I fed Debby breakfast, worked on sermon. Mother called shortly after Bonnie came downstairs—wants us to come to Indiana for their 40th wedding anniversary. We have decided to do this since she called. Had lunch, shaved, finished sermon, typed + ran off the bulletins. Then set out with Debby on my back; we went down to Bear Skin Neck and bought Bonnie a Mother’s Day gift. Then went to call on Esther Longley. Home about 4:30. Then helped with supper—put a pie together; after supper we went over to Wesley Church in Gloucester to the Arts, Crafts, Hobby show—in which some of Bonnie’s sewing is displayed. Home about 8:45. Entertained Alan Fedrich and his parents—showed slides hurriedly—pausing at those with Alan. They went home after 10; bathed; off to bed; θ+; lights out 11:55.

Sunday, 11 May 1969

Awake around 8:00. I had hidden Bonnie’s Mother’s Day gift under the bed, and Debby and I gave it to her after Debby’s bottle: two blue glass candlesticks. Then I got up and did more work on the service—small breakfast, shaved, dressed. Off to the church at 10:00—had to go through things with Jim Tanner. Had 38 at the service—communion. Alice Marr asked to be friends. Didn’t get home til almost 1:00. After lunch we finished 3 rolls of film—in 3 different cameras. Napped, at 3:00 went to the church; we had a meeting with Roxbury people about placing students here in Rockport. This was over about 5:00; came home—after taking more pictures around the church—fixed supper, baked 2 pies. After supper, at 6:30 went back to the church for Joint Youth meeting; home at 7:30. We went to Wesley church to Hobby Show; 9:30 to Patriquins, stayed there until after 11:00; home again; too weary to bathe; off to bed; lights out 11:45.
