The Grand Tour

Itinerary, p. 1

Itinerary, p. 1

In January 1964, Dr. and Mrs. Yegerlehner left Kentland for a three-month tour of the world. While Roscoe served during WWII, he often wrote of his desire to enjoy the exotic places with Gladys; the beauty surrounding him was wasted on a bunch of stag men. It took a couple of decades, but Roscoe and Gladys did eventually see the world.  Avid travelers in their later years, they ventured to every continent, I believe, except Antarctica. A few mementos of their travels still remain in my possession. Roscoe and Gladys took many photographs during their journey. As I continue to scan and organize their collection of slides, look for the occasional photograph to illustrate their letters.

According to their itinerary, Roscoe and Gladys began the tour by flying out of Chicago to Los Angeles, then headed first to Hawaii. What a warm treat for the Indiana couple, escaping the throes of winter!

As part of the trip, Roscoe and Gladys would travel to Indonesia where they would spend almost two weeks visiting John. The travel agency prepared a list of stops and addresses for Mark and David so they could write letters to their parents.

Gladys sent David a postcard after they arrived in Hawaii:

Dear David –
We had a smooth flight. Received traditional welcome of leis and kisses. At hotel a mistake had been made about our room, so manager put us in a Penthouse on top floor with view of Pacific – Diamond Head and about half of Honolulu. Could see a show around swimming pool from our balcony. Had to move to own room this a.m. – nice while it lasted. We are taking tour of Oahu today. Will visit Shirley’s brother & family tomorrow. Nothing planned for Mon. but take outer Island tour. Tues.-Wed.-Thurs.-Fri.-Sat. then start for Tokyo. We are really relaxing and enjoying this 76 temp.

Almost Christmas

1963-12-18-gry-p-1Letter transcription:

[Wright 533 – handwritten by David]
December 18, 1963

Dear David:

Yours received this (yesterday) a.m. I put it in my handbag and forgot about it then got it out this morning and read it again. I am wondering if the test you have to take for Yale indicates they want you or don’t want you. Time will tell. That element is certainly getting away from me. I just finished wrapping a few gifts. I bought a cooking set for Becky for you. I had a little push toy for Kirk I hadn’t had time to wrap, so used it for you, so that is out of the way. We plan to go there Christmas day if weather permits. We have really had it the past 24 hours. We would have been snowbound this morning, but before six o’clock some kind soul was cleaning our driveway out. He came back this afternoon and gave it another cleaning. I think it was Paul Turnpaugh. He has a snow plow. There was a Christmas party for the ABC (old hens) class last night at May Rieger’s, but I didn’t go. When I came home from the office there was so much wind and continuous snowing, I decided to park the Chevrolet in the garage for the night. We watched the wind swirl the snow around the front door and in front of the garage door from your bedroom window. There was quite a drift early in the evening. There isn’t so much snow, but it keeps drifting. The Torah hasn’t come yet, but since you won’t be here until the 30th you can deliver it yourself if it doesn’t come before Christmas. I have a slip gift wrapped that I am going to take to Mrs. M. before the 25th. I stopped to see her a few minutes this a.m. I asked her if she wanted a tree and she said she didn’t have room for one. I got Dad a very nice (I think) gift for Christmas. It is a book written by a lawyer about his life in court. I took a few minutes to read a few paragraphs and he claims the real thing is much more exciting and fascinating than any TV or movie version of a court case.  Am sure Dad will enjoy it. I think it is one we will take along for reading when we want to relax. Since we have paid for our trip we both said that would be our Christmas gift to each other, but you know we will both have gifts under the tree. I also bought him some more long socks and another telephone to put in the bathroom. I ordered both and neither item has arrived, but I still have a week. Dad was to give a program at Rotary last Monday evening and just when it was time for the program to begin he had to leave on a baby case. I had gone to the meeting just in case, so I had to tell about our trip – that was the program Dad had prepared. So many people are wishing us a happy trip and think it is wonderful that we are going to go. Dad is a little unhappy with the Cadillac people – they didn’t get one in for him, so we are seriously thinking about leasing for next year. Will let you know all about it when you come home. I don’t know why, but as long as we had our order in, the car we were supposed to get went to someone else. You can imagine how Dad felt about that. He keeps saying now is the time that he needs the new tires, but since we will be leaving in three weeks he will have to get along with the ones on the car.

I like the A you received on your paper.

Medical Auxiliary

Letter transcription:

[Wright 533 – handwritten by David]
Dec. 11, 1963

Dear David –

Thanks for the birthday gift. I took time out Saturday afternoon to listen to the Met and what was being broadcast? Aida. So, I listened to it again, once or twice. Really haven’t had much time – what with the things I have been doing this week. I made pie crusts yesterday, so listened while I worked.

We plan to go to Chicago tomorrow if road conditions are favorable. It has been snowing a lot this afternoon. The forecast is for 5 or 6”.

Last Saturday I called the State Resident of Medical Auxiliary about getting a Newton County Auxiliary organized – since the Jasper-Newton Co. Medical Association decided to dissolve we haven’t had an auxiliary. We will meet with the Joint Hospital Staff – and Newton Co. Medical Association at the Hospital Friday evening for an organization meeting. While I was talking to Mrs. Sullivan Saturday I asked her if she had any information about the World Medical Relief Projects – since we sent the 100 lb. box of drugs – and received a thank-you aerogramme from a hospital in Taiwan, Formosa for drugs received I decided we might possibly visit some of the places. She said she would refer my inquiry to Mrs. B. Mathews of Indianapolis.

[page 2] Mrs. Mathews and her husband Dr. Mathews were in Kentland last night – on their way to Elgin they were spending the night at Tri Way Inn. She called me and I asked them to come out and see us. They were quite interested in our trip – they have made two trips around the world, so could give us a few tips. Dr. Mathews sponsored a project to send medical equipment to a clinic in India. They also visited the clinic on their trip. They gave us some names – people to contact in India & Hong Kong. (I have been misspelling their name – it is Matthew) – and they belong to Broadway Methodist Church, Indianapolis.

The Kreslers gave us each a passport holder – mine is red & Daddy’s is brown. There are compartments for tickets, traveler’s checks, etc., etc. Very nice.

We may be snow bound tomorrow. I haven’t looked at the driveway since coming home this evening.

The new Cadillac hasn’t come yet. If they can’t get it before we leave they will have to cancel the order.

It is past 10 o’clock and since we plan to go to Chicago tomorrow, I should get to bed.

A Small Christmas Tree

1963-12-09-gry-p-1Letter transcription:

December 9, 1963

Dear David:

I am sending the pants. I mended them with a small patch and stick on mending tape underneath. I hope you can still get some wear out of them, but the patch is very obvious. Maybe you can wear them to loaf around in. I also found a pair of black sox which I have included in the package. Did you by any change get a pair of Dad’s long sox? I can’t find one pair.

We had the girls from the office come to dinner last night – that is, we met them at the Nu-Joy and had dinner, then came home and talked about things that we needed to talk about before we leave. I left it up to them as to when they will take their vacations. Just so they take a vacation each before we return. I don’t know whether they like the idea of a winter vacation, but they will have to get used to the idea because after this I think we will take a month or two each winter and that is when they will have to take their vacations.

Saturday was like spring and today we have real winter. A little blizzard hit here yesterday but didn’t leave too much snow. I t seems awfully cold after all those warm breezes Saturday.

We plan to go to Chicago Thursday to pay for our trip. If we have time we will go on out to Mark’s and while there I will try to buy you another pair of pants at the R. Hall store where Mark works.

We made a small Christmas tree. We took branches and wired them onto the white candelabra (the one Kreslers gave us for Christmas two years ago) and made a tree for the coffee table. I think it is not bad for two amateurs (decorators, that is). I decorated it this morning with little things and have the gifts I have wrapped for Kirk and Becky stacked around it, so it looks a little like Christmas around here.

Thanksgiving Plans

1963-11-21-gry-envelope

Letter postmarked the day Kennedy was killed 11-22-63

Letter transcription:

1963-11-21-gry-p-1Mrs. R.S. Yegerlehner
146 W. Graham Street
Kentland, Indiana
Nov. 21 – 1963

Dear David –

I banked $200.00 for you this week (so you can keep your accounts straight).

Floyd, Ruth & Steve are coming up, for Thanksgiving and Ruth and Earl will come over if someone can go get them. I thought since you and Bonnie would be coming home on Wed. evening you could go over to Wilmington Thurs. morning and get them. I hope that is agreeable with you.

Dad has gone to the hospital on a baby case and I should be getting to bed but want to do a few things yet.

I am to take Mrs. Myers to the dentist tomorrow afternoon and told her I would take her grocery shopping after she gets through. I think she seemed a little disappointed when I told her we wouldn’t have anyone here for Christmas. Maybe we can plan to bring her here for dinner sometime before Christmas. If possible we will go to Chicago for the day.

1963-11-21-gry-p-2Clarence & Clara and two of Kenneth’s girls came last Thurs. so Clarence could hunt pheasant. He hunted but didn’t

[page 2] have any luck. This morning a beautiful cock pheasant strutted around our front yard. Too bad Clarence wasn’t here today.

We will be looking for you Wed. evening.

Jacob DeCoster Jr. of Hebron, Maine

[Editor’s note: This is the second in a series of posts about the DeCoster family of Maine and Massachusetts. Eventually all the separate biographical sketches will be combined into one family lineage and published in book form.]

Jacob4 DeCoster (Jacob3-2, Isaac1) born 27 May 1774, likely Plymouth, Massachusetts;[1] died 29 July 1842, Hebron, Oxford County, Maine.[2] He married at Hebron, 20 December 1801, Susanna Row(e).[3] She was born in 1777;[4] died 15 January 1841, Hebron.[5]

In July 1814, when the British attacked Fort Sullivan at the eastern end of Maine’s coast, the citizens of Maine were propelled into the War of 1812. As the summer progressed, the British advanced down the coastline. Portland was considered to be the next target by September, and thousands of militiamen rallied to defend Portland. Jacob, with his brothers Samuel and Rogers, served in Capt. Isaac Bearce’s Company, Lieut. Col. Cyrus Clark’s 3rd Regiment Massachusetts. They mustered at Hebron and served at Portland from September 13-24, 1814.[6]

Jacob resided, most likely, in Hebron in 1810.[7] By 1820, Jacob ruled over a household of nine members. The household included: two males under ten; three males aged ten to fifteen; one male over forty-five; one female under ten; one female aged sixteen to twenty-five; and one female aged twenty-six to forty-four years of age.[8]

In 1822, Jacob mortgaged a tract of land to the Hebron Academy.[9]

Know all men by these presents, that I Jacob Decoster Junr of Hebron in the County of Oxford and State of Maine Yeoman–in consideration of the sum of one hundred and two dollars paid by the Trustees of Hebron Academy in the County of Oxford–the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge–do hereby give, grant, bargain, sell and convey, unto the said Trustees or their successors or assigns forever, a certain tract of land situated in said Hebron being a part of number four in the fourth range in the first division of lots in said town bounded as follows it being the land I bought of William Fogg beginning at the east corner of [?] and Benjm Rowe’s land and adjoining E. Bearce’s Land, thence north forty five degrees east to Zac Rows land thence North forty five west on said Rows land thirty rods, thence south forty five degrees west to Simon and Benjm Rows land, thence South forty five degrees to the bounds first mentioned thirty rods.

To have and to hold the aforegranted and bargained premises, with all the privileges and appurtenances thereof, to the said Trustees their successors or assigns to their use and behoof forever, And I do covenant with the said Trustees or assigns, that I am lawfully seized in fee of the premises; that they are free of all incumbrances; that I have good right to sell and convey the same to the said Trustees to hold as aforesaid. And the I will warrant and defend the same to the said Trustees their Successors or assigns forever, against the lawful claims and demands of all persons.

Provided Nevertheless, that if the said Jacob Decoster, Jr his heir, executors or administrators pay to the said Trustees their Successors or assigns the sum of one hundred and ten dollars and interest annually, interest to begin the first day of next June and to be paid in three years from the first day of June next then this deed as also one certain note for the above sum bearing were state with these presents given by the said Jacob Decoster Jr to the said Trustees to pay the sum and interest at the time aforesaid shall both be void otherwise shall remain in full force—

Much debate has been made over the use of the name Morse on Susanna’s stone. She died before Jacob so she would not have remarried after his death. Two possible reasons for the inclusion of the name Morse: it may have been her middle name or the individual who erected the newer stone may have made an error regarding Susanna’s maiden name.

Selective Service

Nov. 13-1963

Dear David –

You received a card from Selective Service today – You have a Student deferment to Nov. 1, 1964. Dad just finished writing letters for Jim Johnson & John Saiall, to get them deferred for medical reasons.

I have to give a program for W.S.C.S. in Goodland tonight. I am going over this afternoon to arrange background.

I had my last cholera shot today and have a sore arm. The first one made my arm awfully fore and this shot feels like it is going to be just as bad, if not worse. The first one was 5/10 c.c. and this was a full 1 c.c.

I talked to Dad today about the car and he didn’t think much of the idea.

Love Mother

P.S. I looked at our itinerary and we will return to Chicago Mar. 29, so you won’t be back

1963-11-13-gry-p-2[page 2] in school after all. I think you will be able to meet us.

Travel Plan Changes

1963-11-02-gry-p-1Letter transcription:

[Wright 533 – handwritten by David]
Mrs. R.S. Yegerlehner
146 West Graham Street
Kentland, Indiana
Nov. 2, 1963

Dear David –

Bill brought the desk blotters and the calendar this morning. I took a blotter to Mrs. M. She seemed very pleased. She has several things in her living room she has added since you left: a new chair, a new t.v., magazine rack and some art objects. I suppose you know H. Funk bought the hotel and Dick & Marge Ryan are running it. They are also running an Insurance business where Harold used to have his office. Harold is back in his own building.

Rosemary Murphy is working with the 7th & 8th grace children in our church. I thought she needed the class room Bible Study class was using, so by vote of my class they decided to go to the kitchen. Rosemary is promoting a camp project for next summer. Three of the boys in her class are working on our driveway edge to earn something to go into the camp fund. Before the three boys came here the entire group had earned $25.00 today. I said something to Dad not long ago about working on the driveway and he said he wasn’t interested. He took up the geraniums yesterday for some nurses at the hospital. He said since we would be gone this winter he wouldn’t try to keep them – He didn’t have much success last year.

I had sub-district meetings this week and I am glad they are over. I also finished a study class I was teaching at Raub. Clarence & Clara stopped last Saturday on their way to Ruth M.’s Just as they were leaving Floyd & Steve came. They had just come from Ruth’s. Floyd & Steve had spent a few days in Chicago. Ruth had intended to go with them, but Ruth couldn’t get off from work.

1963-11-02-gry-p-2[page 2] We had a very successful UNICEF drive last Tuesday night – another item in a busy week. We had a very good response from children and parents and I mailed a check to U.S. Commission for UNICEF for $189.15 – $32.00 more than last year.

We may have to change the time when we visit Bonnie’s parents. Since the government of Indonesia has broken diplomatic relations with Singapore we may not be able to fly from there to Djakarta and if we have to go from Hong Kong to Djakarta we will definitely have to change dates. John is having his vacation Feb. 8 to 23 so it may have to be after that time that we go to Malacca. We will probably know more about it when you come home Thanksgiving.

Love Mother

P.S. It was nice hearing from you Oct. 26.

Shots and Vaccinations

1963-10-11-gry-p-1Letter transcription:

[Wright 533 – handwritten by David]
10-11-63

Dear David:

For your information I deposited
9-16 $300.00
9-25   $50.00
9-26   $35.00
9-27   $30.00 (and gave you $40.00 in cash while you were still here – besides the $5.00 for birthday)

You had better try and get your bank account up to date. My adding machine totals the above amount at $455.00. The last time I asked you had a bal. of $88.

I wrote Bonnie a note this morning. I think she left a scarf here. If it is hers I will send it to her. A record came for Gary today. Dad asked me what I was going to do with it and I said just leave it on David’s desk until he comes home Thanksgiving time. If Gary wants it, it will cost 14½ postage to get it down to Bloomington. I thought I was through forwarding things to him.

We had the childrens’ pictures taken Saturday. Red Harris and Marge took them, and I think they did a very good job. We plan to go to Chicago next Thursday to get our Yellow Fever shots (have to go to a Center to get those shots) and after Mark and Shirley see the pictures and take the ones they want I will send you one of each.

I have had a typhoid and paratyphoid shot and a smallpox vacc. I have to get two more typhoid, a cholera, typhus and the Y.F.

I have to stop at Sears and get a seat cover for the Chevrolet. I got one and part of it was missing so had to send it back.

Happy Birthday 1963

1963-09-23-gry-p-1Letter transcription:

Happy Birthday

Dear David –

I suppose we were both in the writing mood at about the same time. I mailed a letter to you at 5:50 yesterday.

So glad you like your courses for this semester. I hope you can come up with some A’s and nothing lower than B’s.

Your experience in the Martinsville church should teach you a lot. You haven’t been exposed to anything like that so I know it seems strange to you. Don’t try too hard to change them.

I can’t remember where I read about the one letter of Paul being extant, but I suppose Dr. Hill has better information.

I am listening [to] Figaro. It has become one of my favorites. I think I could listen to it all day.

1963-09-23-gry-p-2[page 2] I will send the kit and dictionary. I wondered if you had forgotten those items.

Save the stamps on the card you received from S.A. I received a card from Councils of Churches acknowledging my last box of stamps. Since the first of this year they have delivered 890 tons of U.S. Gov’t surplus food to needy families and orphanages overseas. Also $5,938.90 to Church World Service. So keep those stamps for me to send in. Again Happy Birthday.

Love Mother
