Dear Daddy –

It’s late afternoon and I have the last batch or rather two, of swiss chard on cooking. That makes 18 pts. Ruthie and I canned today. Floyd had to go into Chicago in a truck so left Ruth off here to stay until he comes back sometime today. Mrs. Zell told me to cut off the swiss chard & can it as they are going away tomorrow for a week and she wouldn’t have time – so you can

[page 2] imagine the size of the pile of raw chard to make 18 pts. At that we cut off the stems and if I feel equal to the job will can them in qts. tomorrow.

Floyd has to take a scale to Brazil from Chi[cago] – pick up one at Brazil and take back to Bluffton so he brought Ruth along and she is going on to C.C. from Brazil and he is going down for the 4^th. Ruth suggested taking David along with her but I am afraid that it’s a little too soon for him to take a visit – He is taking a nap now. Dorothy

[page 3] came out this afternoon to see him and between she & Ruth I am afraid he got a lot of spoiling – Virginia Zell wanted to take him out in the buggy but he wasn’t satisfied so I put him to bed for a nap.

David broke my glasses a long time ago and I mend them with Mark’s airplane glue but they keep coming apart and I am holding them on now. Mother keeps telling me I should get them fixed. She isn’t feeling any better but is taking a sulfa medicine and it may be reacting on her. I rec’d yours of June 16 today but the 13^th – 14^th & 15^th haven’t come yet, but they will probably

[page 4] come in a day or two. Mrs. Roberts was over yesterday a few minutes. She was taking Earl’s children to their grandparents. She is hoping Joe will get home by Christmas. I am just hoping, without setting any date.

My head feels like I need sleep. Ruth & I talked too late last nite and of course David gets up early for his first bottle. John & Mark are at Ruth’s this week having a vacation. The way Mother feels I don’t know whether I’ll get a vacation for a while. Maybe she will feel better after she gets thru taking Sulfasuxadine. It’s time to get this in the mail.

Dear Daddy –

Another hot sultry day. It looks like rain and once in a while there is a breeze but days like this makes Mother awfully weak. I stopped in to see Dr. M. and asked him about her and he said Bepron was a fine tonic and for her to keep on taking it. While I was there he asked me if I wanted to see the X-Ray of Ruthie Parttens – He showed it to me and was he mad – Mary wanted a bone specialist to see her a few days after Dr. M. had taken care

[page 2] of her and that insulted him but he told them to get someone else – they had Berkhiser from Chicago and he said everything had been done that could be – Dr. M. said he got so sick and tired of people spending their money on specialists. At any rate he says Ruthie is getting along first rate and the rumor that she wouldn’t walk again was rumor there was nothing to it. She is so lively they can hardly keep her in bed. I want to go over and see her but the car is in the garage today. Couldn’t start it yesterday so we pushed it and got it started and stopped at Sondergrath.

Had a letter from Ruth M. and she wants me to send J. & M. over for a week or so and then the rest of us come for the 4^th but Mother doesn’t feel well enough to go any place now and as hot as it is I really would rather stay home with David. Zell’s are going away Wed. for a week and they want J. & M. to mow the lawn while they are gone. However if they want to go to Ruth’s I won’t keep them home. Ruth & Floyd are going to C.C. for the 4^th & wanted us to got too so they could take some more movies of David, but I don’t want to go on such a long trip when it’s so hot, and I can’t plan to go

[page 4] any place while Mother doesn’t feel so well. She said for us to go ahead & go but I wouldn’t want to leave her alone.

Glenn called us yesterday. He talked and his wife talked – he talked to all of us. Had the baby by the phone and we could hear him. I wrote and told him Mother didn’t feel so well and I think he was pretty worried about her. He wanted your address; you may hear from them. His wife’s name is Pauline. The picture enclosed is I think good of David but John says David is better looking than the picture. However I think you can get a good idea what he is like because he laughs so much. After his bath he

[page 5] has curls but after a while they fall down. There are two teeth in front but one show plainer than the other. He is in his bed now singing a song. It is time for him to take a nap so he is in the nursery alone.

Parr’s were in town yesterday. Harlan is having a vacation but has to be back in Tuscola July 4 for work. He is very tan and so is Carolyn, more so than Dorothy & Nancy. They thought David was a pretty fine boy. Harlan still wants a boy. Dorothy said she thinks she has all she can do to take care of two girls.

[page 6] Dorothy Krull said yesterday that Bill Funk wants them to go on a vacation trip together. Dorothy said they would have to close the restaurant and she doesn’t know whether they will or not. I told her if they go to be sure Bill knows where he is taking them.

Had to stop and take baby clothes off the line – a storm was brewing and what a storm – this one took a good portion of the tree by Statons driveway – They have gone to Indpls. And will have to get the tree off their driveway before they can get in when they come back.

[page 7] Mrs. James & Jimmy went along and Bobby was sent home from Zells for misdemeanor so before the storm the neighborhood was rather quiet. It vibrates at times when things get going good.

After the rain started Mark put on his bathing trunks but he didn’t stay out long. It is cooler now since the rain – something we all appreciate. If this summer continues like this we have a lot of hot weather to look forward to. I had to repot a cactus plant – It was on the window sill and the strong wind blew it over and knocked the cactus out of the pot.

[page 8] The storm has let up and the Zell girls & J. & M. are out playing hide & seek. There is still a lot of thunder so maybe it will rain more.

Your mention of the shells makes me think of the box you sent from Noumea that didn’t come. The one that had the necklace you thought prettier than the one I rec’d. I doubt if it ever comes now – it has been so long.

I must get this ready to mail, so John can do to the P.O.

Dear Daddy –

Another hot day – No mail today but have had several letters this week latest being June 12, We are doing our weekly wash – have half out on the line – It’s is nearly time to fix lunch – Mark has gone to Baking class – They are having a farewell party for Rupp. She is getting married. So many new teachers next fall – John just discovered he would have a man math teacher.

[page 2]I think he prefers women teachers. I don’t know why. Maybe they favor him – however he wouldn’t like to hear that.

David has been asleep and sounds like he is waking up – I hope not because he hasn’t slept long enough & it’s so hot today I know the afternoon will be hard for him if he hasn’t slept long enough. He is good up to a certain point but there are so many around him all the time he doesn’t play alone as well as J. & M. did – but that isn’t his fault. He is getting pretty handy with getting around his pen – Mother

[page 3] thinks he will soon walk alone but John did like he does and didn’t walk alone so soon.

Mother is still feeling not so good – She was feeling better with a few cooler days but it is so hot again and seems to take all her pep. She has taken nearly all the Bepron I got for her. I thought it was helping her but she doesn’t seem much better now.

Parr’s are coming to Funk’s for dinner this evening. I don’t know whether they are just on vacation or if he is being transferred again. They have been in Fla since Jan. I suppose I will see them while they are in town.

[page 4] When people around here complain about the weather I remind them you have to take it all the time and we do get relief now & then. Statons are going to Monticello for a week’s vacation – I think I’ll just stay home with David & let the boys go vacationing if they want to. Mark is planning to go to 4-H camp. He wants to go to Earl’s & fish sometime. Ruth wants us to come over for a week but the way Mother feels I am not going to plan anything.

John is begging me to get lunch so will stop this which doesn’t seem to be much today –

Dear Daddy –

We scored again on mail today – Yours of May 20 & 21 came with the travel check. I am sending John to the bank to dep. it and mail this when I finish. Your letters were very refreshing – you had had some from me and answered some questions and commented. First I’ll talk about the furnace & coal situation. Up to now the furnace has been doing “OK.” We keep it well cleaned and Mr. Monroe keeps a record on the oiling and comes every 60 days to go over the oiling job. I have kept coal put in and have a standing order for coal. When I paid the cast coal bill yesterday Chet said he had me down for a fill up the next car that comes in. I was going to have Harlans

[page 2] bring a load but since coal is getting to be so hard to get thought I had better let the order stand at the Lumber co. I can get some later from Harlans. I think you would be proud of our job taking care of the furnace. When we came home from Ruth’s (May 24), I cleaned the furnace out before I started a new fire. It will have to be cleaned again soon because day before yesterday when John & I cleaned the basement we burned a lot of papers & bones.

About Johnson’s baby – he seemed some better last week when Lucile went to Laf. with me to get Mark. However they had to keep his arms & legs covered with long stockings to keep him from digging. I haven’t seen or talked with Lucile since then but will in a day or two. They are giving him S.M.A. and did give him lamp treatments. Ellsworth Wilson’s baby had eczema so bad but it finally left and Lucile is hoping Jimmy Ed will outgrow it too – I saw Ellsworth yesterday – He

[page 3] had Eddie Ray with him. I think they keep him home all the time, or take him with them when they go – He looks pretty good, but after a fracture like he had, I suppose they have to keep a close watch on him (my own observation).

David is in his bed following his his bath & cereal. He can pull up to his feet now. He is so much to climb I can hardly hold him on my lap – he wants to climb right up. Tries to climb out of anything that offers the opportunity – like his buggy or play chair. It is raining today so he can’t go out of doors. His two lower teeth show up very good now. He is due for his last shot but I am going to wait until tomorrow evening – the last one he had in the morning and he was cross all day. I used to leave him in bed with me after he had his 6 a.m. bottle and he would take a nap but he won’t be still now – Just as soon as he gets thru – he turns over and tries to climb up on the head of the bed – Mother gets up about the time he finishes

[page 4] his bottle so she brings him downstairs. Sometimes we wake him up when we go to bed but he just smiles, turns over, takes his thumb and goes back to sleep.

I went down to Funks last night. Arlene had been to Laf. and had a wisdom tooth pulled. She has learned to drive so she drove their car down. Don’t worry, about a gift for Carl’s baby – I gave “Tommy” a present. I haven’t seen him yet but Arlene & I are to go one afternoon soon and see him.

John is practicing a lot this morning – The recital is tonight – – Buddy came out before Mark was up this morning – I didn’t let him disturb Mark – he just waited until he did get up. They are around the house some place now playing. I think Buddy has been out here every day except Sun. since Mark came home from the hospital. I think Mark’s throat is about normal again. He doesn’t chew quite so much aspergum. He has a good appetite and says he has gained back all he lost while in the hospital. Last night when we were ready for bed he weighed 61.

Had a letter from Ruth M. today

[page 5] She was going to Tat Coan’s wedding. Tat went into the Catholic Church and had quite a large wedding. When we were over there they were having several showers for her. Ruth had been invited to one. Tat and Helen came to see us while at Ruth’s – of course they wanted to see D.

I just looked at the clock and see it’s 11:30 so must get busy and stir something for lunch. I bought potatoes again yesterday. We don’t buy by pecks anymore. It’s by the 10 lb. – (73¢ for 10 lbs). I got 2 lbs hamburger and it was 31¢ lb. I ran out of meat – still have chickens, bacon (and the strawberries I put in Tues). Brands said they had a quarter I could have but it didn’t materialize. Parttens have promised me a quarter but they won’t butcher till fall, so I got caught with my locker almost empty. However Zells’ frys are ready and I am going to put a dozen in the locker. I must stop and write your Mother a line.

Dear Mother,

All done with morning chores and the most terrific thing I could do was take a fellow’s finger nail off. He had a little infection back of it that wouldn’t heal so I just jerked it off.

I think I told you about receiving a letter from Rev. McCloud some time age and I just got to thinking of some of the things he wrote. He explained that Kentland was having dim outs or black outs and that he and Chet L. were the big bosses

[page 2] in their block. That’s a laugh. I don’t mean the He and Chet but the black out – business. From our stand point or view point it is amusing but in a way it isn’t so bad because it gets the people at home in a better frame of mind. I remember at Norfolk when Mr. “Such a Nice Man” had a dim light on in his upstairs room and was bawled out something terrible for not turning it out. And also one wasn’t allowed to smoke even on the porch, but such is life in different places

[page 3] and under different circumstances. We’ve been here now for some time as you know and we’ve enjoyed what we are doing and I might say almost all have gotten a kick out of doing it.

I haven’t heard from Joe R. or Hicky since writing them but I expect an answer very soon because as I’ve said before we aren’t far apart. Of course I could be mistaken.

Yesterday two Clay City news came and some cigarettes from Ruth M. The cigarettes were in A-1 condition. Not a mark or mar

[page 4] on the entire package. I really don’t get much kick out of the C.C. news because many of the names are foreign to me. However there was three items about the family – Wilma graduating, Floyd moving and Mrs. R. S. Yegerlehner and three sons visiting. They were the Apr. 16 and 23 issues, and of course I knew all of those items before. I did see where lots of the boys were home on leave which makes one wish more than somewhat.

Well parts of this have been very vague but as strong as I could make them –

Dear Mother,

Just looked at the calendar and decided that if the Indianapolis races were to be held this year it would be day after tomorrow but since they aren’t being held I guess that particular date doesn’t mean any more than any other day.

A letter came from Ruth Y yesterday eve, just telling of their move and a little gossip at the end about Dr. Bond and his office girl which didn’t impress me in any way whatsoever. I guess things

[page 2] like that happen often and whenever they do there is always much talk – regardless of the truth.

It was cool enough for a while last night that I used the sheet and bed spread – maybe that is a sign of winter – However, this A.M. it’s as hot and sticky as ever.

The commanding officer asked me this morn. where I’d like to spend the weekend. I told him I’d like to go the beach and camp out for a night or two. That was the end of the conversation.

Yesterday I told of having eggs for breakfast – well it was different this A.M. – beans and toast. What a meal! I think however we will

[page 3] have cuttin meat today maybe twice. Sure hope there are some of those potatoes left so that we can have French fries. Here I go into the food subject again. It always starts in the conversation as – “How would you like to have a big think steak” and then all the elaborate trimmings that one ever heard of to be added.

Well, I hope some mail gets thru in a day or two –Ruth M & Ruth Y’s letter were both dated May 10. Which is four days later than yours.

Although this letter does not mention Roscoe’s tent mate George, his initials appear on the envelope as the naval censor. At this point, Roscoe has dropped enough clues about his friend George that I have been able to figure out who he was. George Wingfield, Jr. was born 5 May 1914, and died 11 November 1987. He was the son of George Wingfield, Sr. and his wife Maude A. Murdoch. George Wingfield, Sr. was a very powerful and important person in the history of Nevada. In 1993, University of Nevada history professor C. Elizabeth Raymond published her book George Wingfield: Owner and Operator of Nevada. By the 1940s, the two Georges were co-owners of at least two hotels in Reno. In February 1943, Ensign George arrived in the Russell Islands with Roscoe on the U.S.S. John Penn.

Dear Mother,

I’m a little late this A.M. due to some extra work and I may have to cut this short. One letter from you John and 3 from you came this A.M. but they were all old letters Apr. 24, 25 & 29 – was glad to get them of course but would appreciate later ones more – one came from Ruth M. yesterday. It was dated May 10 – a v-mail. I think I mentioned in yesterday’s letter to keep writing some v-mails along with regular air mail.

This A.M. for breakfast we really had a treat – Eggs – sunny side up and bacon. Seems as if one

[page 2] of the fellows did a good job of procuring. We had only 18 eggs so only 9 of us got to share in the ordeal. That’s the first since early in Feb.

Just let one of the fellows have John’s letter to read – he hasn’t made any comment yet only on the party where he said only educated people liked the oboe.

Well, I must get going will write more tomorrow –

14th Anniversary (Gladys)

Dear Daddy –

Today marks our 14^th. Just hope we can celebrate the 15^th together.

It is still on the rainy order here. Last nite we had a clear sunset but by the time we went to bed it was beginning to storm. It is undecided this a.m. Right now the sun is shining & Mark is out with David getting some Vit C. In spite of the rainy weather we get David out between showers enough to keep him tanned. He will certainly be well tanned if he keeps on the way he is going. He has skin like his Daddy – Mark was helping with his both this morning and commenting on how handsome he is because

[page 2] he looks like Daddy. Ruth called David “little Jake” while we were over there. He is 8 mo old, weighs 19 lbs and has a tooth. He was as glad to sleep in his own bed again as the rest of us. The bed Ruth had borrowed for him was just a small crib and it cramped his style.

This letter and other things encl. came this morning from St. E. I think I covered the situation in my letter after I attended the ceremony but they requested it be forwarded so here it is. When we went to the P.O. to mail your letter last nite (6 P.M.) Parr handed John four letters from you. So far the latest is May 10 and one check for 150⁰⁰ is here. You said in your latest you would wait a few days to send the other.

Mr. Zell said every member at Rotary last night wrote you a letter so your mail should pick up.

[page 3] I am going to take John to Dr. Ade this week for a final exam, and also I want to take Mark to Dr. Cole. He has been showing signs of nervousness again – He was doing pretty good until, since school has been out. He shakes his head so much. I put him to bed early last night and am going to try and keep him from playing so hard. He seems to feel good and has a good appetite but shakes his head. Dr. M. looked at his tonsils after he had measles and said they looked bad, however I think I’ll take him to Dr. C. for a going over. If he needs his tonsils out I would rather leave him in the hospital a day or two. He thinks he is going to have a picnic having an operation – you know him – he is really anticipating it with relish. Mark was so tired & worn out from our trip I didn’t send him for a piano lesson this morning. Don’t worry about him because I am sure with rest and a little less excitement he will soon be over this condition. He plays so hard and last week was the first week of vacation. I think he

[page 4] tried to cram too much into the first week.

Our garden is still too wet to work in and the weeds are growing more daily. I got radishes & onions yesterday after we came home and Mark got such a thrill out of his first garden stuff. The potatoes are up about a foot high. They have done better than Zells in the same patch. Mr. Z. said he thought theirs had rotted from so much rain. He got theirs planted before we got ours out.

John has gone to take his music lesson this morning. The recital is to be next week. He got to play on Johnson’s new piano while we were there and of course kept busy at Ruth’s a good bit of the time.

It is time to start lunch so must get busy.

Dear Daddy –

Just returned home from Wilmington and it’s still raining. Last Fri it was nice and we got our washing and a few other things done, then on Sat the fair weather continued so we went to Ruth’s and took the 350 sweet potatoe & 4 dz. snap-dragon plants. Earl was waiting and as soon as Ruth fixed his supper, he took the plants out to his garden and set them out. His garden is 5 miles out on 113 – It is on a hill and the drainage is good so with fair weather Fri & Sat it was just right to put the plants out. He also went out Sunday and worked all day or most of the day but it has rained so much and

[page 2] is getting so late he said he felt like he had to work when the ground was dry. Well it certainly is wet now. We drove home thru rain all the way. In some places it poured. We had to go thru some water on the pavement but not much. Just before we left Wilmington there was a hard shower.

I brought back several different kinds of flowers to set soil out. It will have to dry off some before I get them out. John wanted to know if he had to mow the lawn when we got home. I told him it would probably need it.

David is very glad to get home. Ruth’s neighbor loaned us a bed and chair – the chair has a table around it and I brought it home to use as long as he will stay in it. He is in this pen now having a good time. I have knitted him a sweater outfit

[page 3] and it was very popular. The cap has a bill like a regular boys cap and that took the prize. The neighbor who loaned the bed and chair wants the pattern for the whole outfit so she can knit her 2 yr old one. Mrs. Servies crocheted the cap but I made the sweater & pants.

I had four letters of May 1, 2, 5 & 6. The uniform money was in one. I will deposit it tomorrow. I’ll have to write the Ins. co. as to the amt of the loan. I read your letters rather hurriedly so will have to scan thru them again. Had to rekindle the fire when we came home and before I did that had to clean out the furnace. It is about time to feed David but I want to get this in the mail before 6 P.M. I didn’t get a letter written yesterday but being company it isn’t easy to always to

[page 4] writing. I enjoyed our visit very much but a little tired – which is to be expected after driving home thru the rain.

We had dinner at Johnsons yesterday and got to see their new home. It is very nice but not as large as ours. Of course Clarence had time to work on theirs which made a difference in finishing. He did the wiring and all their switches are silent.

I am trying to write and the rest of the family is trying to get David ready for bed so I’ll have to stop – I know this letter has been jumbled up but will try to do better next time – after I have had a good rest in my own bed.

Hope you have the garden seed by now.

The rain seems to have cleared away – at least it is sunny this a.m. and very refreshing. Just hope it stays this way a day or so. It has rained so much and there are floods everywhere in the low lands. Got yours of May 3 & 4 with the Mothers Day greeting. Wish I could send you one of the frozen hens. You should have the seeds by now. Mark pulled up a radish and we will soon be having some. I think he will be able to do some weeding this afternoon. John is working on the lawn now and Mark is keeping David out in the buggy so he can get plenty of sunshine today. He was in all day Wed & Thurs so needs all he can get today. We have our washing hanging on the line. Mark left his watch in his pants pocket and it went thru the Bendix so I think it is probably finished. We aren’t going to Ruth’s today because it has rained so much Earl couldn’t set anything out today, but if it stays clear we plan to go tomorrow afternoon. We have a lot of work to do around here now that is has stopped raining and we can do something. To date the check you mentioned hasn’t arrived, but your letters of May 1, 2, 5, 6, 7 & 8 are still enroute. The box you mentioned before leaving Noumea never came. Maybe it will trail in but it has been more than three months since you sent it so I doubt if it gets here now. Will get some more pictures taken this week –end if it is nice day – David will be 8 mo old Sunday.
