Measles certificate (Gladys)

Dear Daddy – Still having typical March weather. It rained last night and the ground is so soft can’t be walked on. Maybe we will have good garden weather this spring. I went to a garden meeting yesterday. A man from Purdue spoke. There is volumes I don’t know about gardens, but I want to give it a try this summer. Mr. Zell is using all the space north of their house to the corn field for a garden and intends extending it back to Bills’ lot. He said Mark & I could have enough space for our garden. I am going to take Mark to Dr. M. this afternoon to get a certificate to go back to school. Every child who has had the measles has to get a certificate from the Dr. before they can go back to school. Mark seems to feel pretty good. Has been working on models while loafing this week. John hasn’t shown any signs yet of taking measles. I sent a letter out to your folks yesterday to tell them I had yours of Feb 26. Just hope we get to go down in Apr. No letters today. I think there are three yet to come you have mentioned. I would send you stamps but you would probably get others first. Since it took so long for you to get what I did send. The notice for your lodge dues came but I haven’t paid it yet. May do that while in C.C. I saw Hilda Barce and she said Ed is in Kokomo – Recruiting Sta. She said to tell you hello for them. I haven’t seen Ed for a long time but he comes out once in a while. He gets home pretty often. He says he wishes he could be sent out. – About time for John to come for lunch – and he is always so hungry. David is taking a nap. Weighed 16 ½. Has a coming appetite no teeth yet but plenty of pep. Isn’t gaining so fast now – takes too much exercise to get overfat.

Mark is still home (Gladys)

Dear Daddy – Another March day – Rain & wind. Mark is still home. He got over the measles nicely but I thought I would be better to keep him in a few days. I am giving him unicaps. He is a little thin but seems to feel good. The baby had 2 c.c. Immune Globuline last Thurs. Can’t tell yet whether he will take measles or not. John said he would rather have them now and not have to be afraid of getting them all the time. So far no one in the 7th grade has had them but Angus Washburn was out today so he may be taking them. Sammy is over them. I got your letter of Feb 26 today. I wrote your folks and gave a brief resume. Dolores isn’t coming home till Apr 9 so we will plan to go that week-end (Friday the 9th) after school Ruth M. may go with us. Earl doesn’t get enough gas to drive only to work. I haven’t used all my coupons so far. Will leave the car at the garage and have it greased & checked over before we go. Mom said Kenneth is still in Indpls as far as they know. I believe he wants to go into the air corps. Paul and Earl both got deferments. Wilma graduates this spring and wants to take nurses training. David is chewing on a toy. He acts like his gums bother him. Joe Fletcher saw him yesterday and said he was the best looking boy we have but told him D. looks a lot like John did. Floyd things he looks like Mark. Hope you get his picture & ours I sent some weeks ago. Will have some more to send in a few days. I have been sending pictures in registered letters. There is a meeting at the High School at 2:30 for gardeners. A man from Purdue is going to speak. I may go if I get around in time. Have to feed D. at 2. I should take Mark but this weather wouldn’t be very good for him since I am keeping him home so he won’t catch cold.

Let’s move to Florida for the winter (Gladys)

Dear Daddy – It seems like spring has arrived. It is so warm and the sun is shining. The tulips were up before the last cold spell that ended this week but they weren’t hurt any. Mark is up today and feeling fine. Measles about gone. He is wearing dark glasses yet today. John said he would rather have measles and be thru with them than to take a shot. David didn’t get any reaction from the immune Globuline Dr. M. gave him Thurs. I will keep a close watch on John now for any evidence of measles. Hope he does get by without them. It is so nice out of doors now I took D. out yesterday for the first time in two weeks and intend to go out again today. Margaret Kruman went to Fla during February. I told her I was thinking about going down next winter for all winter. I believe I could close the house and keep up the payments and live down there on the same as we have to spend here. Our coal bill to date is 129⁰⁰. Of course we still have plenty to last for a while. Let me have an opinion on the matter. Now don’t let it worry you. I am not jumping at ideas but have been thinking about this for some time. I was thinking about how much better it would be to miss the winter months here. Of course, this was an extreme winter and don’t suppose it will be so cold next year, and I know when you come home you won’t want to go to a warm climate to reside. My throat seems to be very weak this winter. Last week I got a bug in my right tonsil and it was sore several days but finally Dr. M. hit it with the right stuff & got it straightened out. Just hope with spring I won’t be so susceptible to throat germs. Days like this makes me want to get out in the yard and so things. Let me know what you want done in particular. John has gone to take his piano lesson. Mark is playing with marbles. He is a little hard to hold today – want to read and I don’t want him to for a day or two yet. Everyone is fine,

John is coming home (Gladys)

Dear Daddy – Bright and sunny today – temp mild. Quite a contrast from last week, but this is March. Mark is quite improved – no temp and measles are beginning to fade. He was itching this morning so I put some zymochol on him and that stopped the itching. He is quite cheerful. Dr. M. came out last evening and gave David 2 c.c. Immune Globuline. So far he hasn’t had any reaction. He ate his cereal at 10 & took all his milk then played a while and went to sleep.  Weighed 16 ¼ this morning. John is coming home this evening. I am going to try and get him to take the serum but you know as well as I do how he shuns needles. Well if he doesn’t take the serum and has measles I won’t be so afraid for the baby now, and I will isolate John if he does take them. There were 56 out of the grade school so they closed Thurs.  Fri but will open Mon. I think I’ll keep Mark home a few days yet so he can catch up a little on his eating before starting out again. Meat Butter, cheese cooking fats are to be rationed April 1. 2 ¼ lb meat per person per week – don’t know about the rest. Joe Kenny was married Feb 22 at Tuscon Arz – he is stationed there – Juanita Arnold & Donald Hall were married at New Brunswick N. J. Mar 4. He is stationed there. She is back here now. Tom Murphy & Mrs. have gone to Flordia for his health. Marlowe Haileys have a baby boy. She had to have a section. Ira Dixon is reported improving. They didn’t operate. Irene said she & Link were going to Mayo Clinic Sat for examinations – She is working all the time but says she doesn’t feel very well. Link is going for his knee. Dr. Cole told Irene if she didn’t get better to quit work & rest. We are all fine.

Quite an appetite (Gladys)

Dear Daddy – No letter today or yesterday, but will keep looking every day now since receiving three this week. I think there is one yet to come. One letter came Mon. saying you had written three, but only two more came – Well the weather is getting a little warmer but will look for anything during March. Mark is getting along fine. Had temp of 103 ½ – yesterday but broke out good and is feeling much better this a.m. Sleeps OK at night and doesn’t cough much now. Temp was 99 1/5 this morning. He wants some dinner so he must be improving. Now if John takes them maybe he can get along as well. They closed the grade school – there were 56 out with measles. There are some cases of chicken pox & scarlet fever but we won’t have to worry about them. We are going to give David Immune Globuline if we can get it. Jack Byrnes ordered from Chicago. There wasn’t any to be had in Laf. Mrs. Roberts called me last night and she is going to try and find some for me – said Joe had some but thought his Dad took it when he left. – – Pause – to feed Mark. He had quite an appetite and is feeling pretty good. Dr M. said John could come home tomorrow evening after school Mark thinks John has had it pretty nice eating all his meals at the restaurant. Ira Dixon had another spell like the one he had before. They took his to St. E. – didn’t know whether it was appendicitis or kidney stone. Haven’t any late word about him. Arvilla was on the floor with him when he entered the hospital. Dr. P. wrote me a letter and said he would send your things when he gets instructions from you. I am answering his letter. He said they hated to see you leave. (So did a lot of other people).

News reels (Gladys)

1943-03-09 #2Letter transcription:

MRS. R. S. YEGERLEHNER

Dear Daddy – Have been knitting an outfit for David and sitting on John’s bed to keep Mark company. He is breaking out some and rather uncomfortable. Still has a high temp (103 ½ ) but when he breaks out he probably will be better. Dr. M. is going to give David Immune Globline. I am not sure about how to spell it but you know what I mean. John comes after school and takes care of the furnace then goes to Krulls. If M. gets broken out and over this by Sat. John can come back home. I think all the children in the grade school who haven’t had measles will have them now the way new cases keep developing. However it isn’t so bad in High S. Caroline Wright said Valley saw a news reel in Hammond and you were in it – Do you remember doing any posing? She stayed thru two shows to be sure it was you and declares it was . One of the Henry boys was in a news reel shown here. I didn’t see it but others did. Lucile is still having a little difficulty with Jimmy Ed. She said she didn’t think she would ever get him regulated. Was up with him about all last night. When I told her D. sleeps from 6 to 6 she said she didn’t think Jimmy would ever do that but I told her he would in time. He gets his days and nights mixed up once in a while but seems to be growing right along. David was growing faster than he is now because since quitting the 10 P.M. bottle he didn’t take any more in the other four feeding, but he takes more now – so I think will gain more again. At 5 ½ months he weighs a little more than 16 lbs. The last two days I have had to increase the amt of milk in each feeding. It is much warmer. The snow is about gone but more snow won’t surprise me. Must get to bed or I will be getting my days & nights mixed. Irene & Link are going to Mayols [?] for examinations. Irene says she hasn’t felt well all winter.

High temp (Gladys)

1943-03-09 #1Letter transcription:

MRS R. S. YEGERLEHNER

Dear Daddy – Had two letter from you today and one from Dr. P., but I had received one from you yesterday. He said he would send the box when he received word from you to send it. It is windy today and not so cold. Mark is still running a temp. but hasn’t broken out yet but probably will today or tomorrow (measles in case you missed previous letters). John is staying at Krulls & I am going to ask Dr. M. about giving David Immune Globuline. Mark feels pretty good and is being very good patient. He is so afraid he will hurt is eyes he is satisfied to have the room darkened. After I put D. to bed (after his 6 P.M. feeding) last evening I stayed with Mark a while. His temp got up to 103 in the afternoon and he was pretty quiet but his temp is down this a.m. and he keeps talking to me. He listens to his radio some but not all the time. Virginia Britton kept Tommy out of school, but I think he was exposed before she kept him home because there was a child broke out in the room and he evidently had temp several day previous to that, and Tommy was in school until the day this child broke out. Your notice for dues to the A.M.A. came yesterday but I think you said not to pay it. Also an announcement of Lake Co. Medical meeting to be held in Hammond. Mr. Monroe came this morning and oiled the furnace. He keeps the dates and comes every 60 days and looks things over. He hasn’t charged me anything yet but maybe he will when he get thru in the spring. He has worked on the drains twice. I asked him about the septic tanks & he said they wouldn’t need cleaning – or shouldn’t for several years. I’ll leave the news & gossip for the men around town to write. Don’t worry about the measles – I am sure Mark will get along OK the way he feels now. You know he stands diseases pretty good. I am going to keep him in as long as necessary.

My mail was good today (Gladys)

1943-03-08Letter transcription:

Dear Daddy – My mail was good today. Had one letter posted Feb. 20 in which you said you had written three before but haven’t rec’d them. Possibly will this week. Well I feel better now and to get regular mail again will help lots. Still have Mark in bed with some temp but no evidence of measles. If he doesn’t break out tomorrow I won’t know what to think. He doesn’t feel bad has a good appetite, but I am keeping him in bed. John is going to Krulls to stay in case Mark does break out so he won’t have to miss school. Dr. M. said that was between me and the health officer. I told him what happened when M. had mumps and I didn’t intend to have that again. If John stayed home I think he would be the only one. There hasn’t been any in John’s class out with measles so I think he won’t be so apt to get them (I hope). I sent your mother a picture of D. and she said he looks like you did, only he is bigger than you were. I hope you have the registered letter by now with all our pictures. We are still have snow and cold weather. Yesterday it was 6 below but is warmer today. I think everyone is so tired of cold weather according to the ground hog tradition we have another week yet of this kind. We are anxious (Mark & I) to get our garden out. John hasn’t any enthusiasm about mowing lawn – as that is to be his job this summer. Not much outside news. It’s been too cold to go out and now that we are under suspicion of measles can’t take the baby out for a while. It is time for his 2 P.M. vegetable & milk and he is getting hungry.

John is getting so tall (Gladys)

1943-03-07Letter transcription:

Dear Daddy – After writing yesterday I went to Lafayette. It was snowing and blowing but the roads were clean. I didn’t drive went with Nesbitts. I wanted to do some shopping for the boys. I got each a new suit. There seems to be quite a merchandise shortage partly due I think to people buying more than necessary and storing. I haven’t done any unnecessary buying and don’t intend too, but John and Mark needed suits. John is getting so tall – he has grown inches this winter or so it seems. Mark is still in bed today under suspicion of measles. He has a little temp. but no indication otherwise of measles. He was exposed about 10 days ago in school. He is staying in his room and I have the blinds closed. John is staying downstairs and I am thinking of sending him someplace to stay so he won’t have to miss school if Mark does break out. There aren’t very many cases in the high school so think John chances of exposure are questionable. I am to help with the Red Cross drive tomorrow. I am to solicit all east of 41. There aren’t very many I have to see. – – Later – Have put D. to bed, mixed formula, had supper & washed dishes. D. is learning to sit up. The buggy I have is small and is perfect for him to sit in. He looks like he has some teeth about ready to come thru and he drools when he sits up so have to keep a bib on him. He weighs 16 lbs and will be 5 ½ months old tomorrow. Sleeps from his 6 P.M. feeding until 6 A.M. I think we have to give Mark a 1 P.M. bottle until he was several months older than D is now. I wanted  [to] take some more pictures outside but it has been too cold to take D. out and now it is even colder than last week – Was 6 below this morning and lots of snow. I wonder if this winter is going on – even after the middle of Mar. By Easter coming late we may have lots of chilly weather yet. I don’t know what these Mar 17th potatoe planters will do – That is 10 days away so may be warm by then (I hope). John is working on an essay – he is entering a contest. He asks how to spell words once in a while, and who does that make me think of? I haven’t talked to Mrs. Roberts recently but I intended going over then the weather turned so cold then the measles epidemic started here so thought I had better stay at home. Of course there wasn’t any indication of Mark or John taking them until yesterday when Mark started running a temp.

The measles have arrived (Gladys)

1943-03-06Letter transcription:

Dear Daddy – We are having a snow again today. The air is white and as far as I can see there is a white haze. I think Mark is taking the measles. I have him shut up in his room with the blinds closed and he is listening to the radio. He got up this morning feeling so good and then he said he didn’t feel so good. I took his temp. and it was 100 2/5 so I put him right to bed. We don’t know yet what we will do with John. He wants to go to school and I don’t know whether he will be allowed to. I will keep the baby in his room downstairs and hope he doesn’t get the measles. There are so many children having or had the them, maybe they won’t be severe, but we will no doubt be over them by the time you get this. Had a letter from Uncle Wes. He and Aunt Jessie have had bad colds but are about well now. They are coming down some day after the weather clears up. John had a letter from Duane and he said Kenneth passed his physical. Freida Holley’s husband has had to go. Their baby is still small. I suppose she will go back to Buddy’s. D. is raising a fuss. It is time for his nap. He just had his bath & feeding. He played a while and got some attention now he doesn’t want to go to sleep. I didn’t deduct those dividends from the Dec. prem. but I wrote in and they are going to deduct them from the next prem. (apr). No uniform money yet. It will be like finding it when it does come. Will send some more pictures in a few days.
