Bible Study Class – Genesis

Dear David and Bonnie –

Dad wanted you to read the enclosed article which was in Wall Street Journal.

I sent the finished sleeves for Bonnie’s dress. If you can’t get them joined to your satisfaction, send back the dress and sleeves and I will see what I can do with them.

Dad has the bedroom finished and hasn’t got the fever to make the record holder, so is just loafing around this evening. Tomorrow a.m. I have to conduct a study class for W.S.C.S.—Genesis—I have no idea how many will be present. I have enough literature collected—a text book, Genesis, Beginning of the Biblical Drama, a paper bound Genesis, my anchor Bible, Genesis Abington Commentary, Interpreter’s Vol. 1, The Torah, and Atlas of the Bible, besides a few pamphlets. If every one reads all the literature I have collected for them they should get some idea about what they are supposed to learn. I really would rather not do this, but since I took the course of lectures on Genesis at School of Mission and the Bible Study Class has taken the course, I was asked and I consented.

We had such a nice letter from Nell George thanking us for a pleasant visit. She thinks you and Bonnie—well this is what she wrote—“Meeting David and his lovely wife was a rare treat. I was

[page 2] very impressed with them and know that God will use them in a wonderful way to further his cause in this troubled mixed-up world. I know you must be very proud of him and the way he has chosen.” Dr. George selected some slides of our Bali pictures and I have sent him the duplicates.

I have some filing to dispose of and a few other things to do, so must get to work, since I will be at the church tomorrow a.m. for study group and have a group coming in the afternoon to clean the nursery.

Taxes for 1964

Jan. 5 – 1965

Dear David & Bonnie –

I have been figuring taxes today. Sat. I went to Lafayette to have Mr. Huth figure the depreciation schedule and he also advised us to take you as a dependant and pay you the difference which will be small in comparison to what it would cost us not to use you. He also said many people handle the same situation that way. I think the best way is for you to each file separately and have Bonnie just take herself. Let us know how your figures come out. If I knew what each of you had earned I could figure it for you—I have the new schedule in front of me.

I found your ear muffs on the front seat of my car. The ones I gave you were from last year—and probably yours.

We received a long letter from Mac & Louise Sat. They sent us some slides—of the graduation which Bonnie’s mother thought had been sent long ago. Also two of scenes in Malacca.

Time for me to go to the office.

Dental Appointments

Dear David & Bonnie – After receiving your letter I called Dr. Logan’s office and asked for appointments for you both but Grace didn’t say more than, “I will see what I can do,” so I can’t promise you anything for sure. John Janssen has been washing windows, scrubbing garage floor, front steps, etc. I decided his back is much stronger than mine and I had enough to do with sweeper and dust cloth. I saw J. Ross this a.m. while in grocery store. I was telling her how well you are getting along in school. She said she was sorry she couldn’t report the same for the twins (one at I. U. and the other at Ind. State). However, she indicated they were having a good time – could be one reason for the poor grades. We were told that Stacie didn’t get into the sorority at DePauw she wanted to get into and that she is going to go to Purdue next semester. However that came by grapevine. I talked to her mother last night and the only thing she said that might indicate any trouble was S. would pledge if her grades were right and that she is having trouble with “History of Civilization”—a required course. Since none of our three sons were socially ambitious I can’t be too disturbed about someone not making or achieving a social aim. Hope this weather—it is about 50 today—holds. Hope to see you the 23^rd. Love Mother

Car Accident

Dec. 2 – 1964

Dear David & Bonnie –

I suppose you have had a request from Rev. Fields for a sermon one Sunday while you are at home for Christmas.

Nov. 21 we went to Chicago and saw Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins then out to Mark’s to spend the night and on Sunday brought Becky home with us. Mark, Shirley, & Kirk came on Wed. John also came home on Wed. Becky really missed Kirk and when they arrived she hardly noticed Mark & Shirley at first (she did give them hugs) but grabbed Kirk by the hand and away they went to see something. Before they arrived she had said she wanted to see her brother.

When John went back to Champaign Sunday his car hit a slick place, skidded and another car hit his car and he had to continue on to Champaign by train, leaving his car at Paxton for repairs. He said when he called us he had his seat belt fastened and he said he wasn’t injured, but the window on the driver’s side was broken and his glasses were knocked off – someone found them on the pavement. I presume from what he said glasses were not broken. I am thankful the accident wasn’t any worse. We haven’t talked to him since Sunday evening. He said he would call if anything developed.

Last night I went to a club meeting held at the Geo. Ade Home by the hospital. Kathleen Funk gave a program about his literary career. He was really an unusual writer and I am afraid much of the population here do not appreciate what a celebrity we had in our midst. The home is being restored but the committee still lacks $5,000.00 to complete the job. Dad thinks it is a good thing for the community to have a reminder of our literary heritage but not enough people care to

[page 2] contribute to the cost of it. Since the home as been restored the Home Committee has had open house several times. Kathleen told me they have had people come from around here – that is I mean around Kentland but that Kentland people had not shown any interest. John Funk has been quite active in getting the home restored.

I saw the tiara on TV this a.m. that the Pope has contributed for the poor of the world. I also learned it was a gesture, it didn’t really mean the tiara is going to be sold. I suppose there could be arguments both ways – but as you once stated when you were learning to make sentences—“In the first place, why did he have a tiara to begin with”—what you said was, “In the first place, why you buy that kind of cheese.” The msgr. On TV this a.m. said there was more than one Papal tiara but this one was given to the Pope by the people of Milan.

My time is fleeting and I am not getting anything done, so must get busy.

Will meet you at the airport Dec. 23 – 8:37 and hope for good weather. Of course you can write any time between now & then. I have decided not to send you pictures of our “Japanese Garden” – since it is just 3 weeks until you will be home you can see it for real.

Thurs. Nov. 12 – 1964

Dear David & Bonnie –

Yours received. Now let’s hope the weather will be fair Dec. 23.

Yesterday I went to Lafayette and bought evergreens to finish the around the house planting. I drove from Lafayette to Attica and gave a program for W.S.C.S. I showed pictures from Bali. It was guest day so a number of women were in attendance from other towns. Dad got one of the evergreens set out last night. He finished this afternoon. Last week Bill Stenz had his workmen take out the terrace. We have stone all around the house now, so no more weeds to pull. Dad is making stepping stones out of cement at the back living room door. John Janssen is here now cleaning windows. The breaking up of the cement made a lot of dust. Today we had a terrible wind most of the day but by the time John was ready to work the blowing had stopped. This afternoon we made a quick trip to Morocco to get our driver’s license renewed and the fields where corn had been but – along the fences it looked like someone had been decorating for Halloween or a fall festival – the fences were so covered with corn cuttings. It is so dry everywhere – there was a prediction for rain today but so far only wind. We have been watering the new evergreens once a week, but after this fall that shouldn’t be necessary.

I have read about the anchor Bible. The Chicago Tribune had an article about it. I took the paper to Sunday school and showed it to my class. They didn’t seem too impressed, but after reading about it I was quite interested.

I am hoping the whole family will be home for Christmas. Don’t worry about sleeping arrangements – as suggested we can use the motel. If I could find some air mattresses I would make a dorm in the living room.

I have been invited to a shower for Patricia (Cookie) Franklin, who is to be married to Jerry Carlson Dec. 8. I can’t attend the shower since

[page 2] I have to serve on a committee for a vesper circle meeting that evening (next Wednesday). Monday Dad and I are to give a program for Sheldon P.T.A. – Tues. Dad is planning to go to Lafayette to a meeting and I am to entertain a BC class. Wed. afternoon I have promised to give a program for Raub W.S.C.S. and Wed. evening help at Marge Fisher’s for above mentioned meeting. I half way promised to take Mrs. Myers to Lafayette a week from tomorrow.

Howard Fisher was going to Bob Jones College (I think it is in Tenn.) He was expelled. According to what his parents tell I would think he would be glad. He says they have informers and the first rule of the college is “no griping” and if anyone complains about not liking anything there is always an informer around to run and tell and that was what happened to Howard. He talked to his roommate about something and the roommate was one of the “informers” and in a very short time he was called to the office and told to leave immediately.

I saw Janice Ross this week. She and Bill had been to visit Nancy at Indiana State and Sara and a friend had driven from Bloomington (Sara is going to I.U.) to join them. Joy Funk dropped out of Marquette and has applied for work in Peace Corps. Don is going to St. Joe at Rensselaer and according to his mother has settled down. Jim Johnson was home two weeks ago. His mother says he is getting interested in a girl he has met in Midland Michigan. He works for Dow chemical. He has met a Methodist minister who seems to be making quite an impression on Jim. Karen is back at Hanover and so is Margaret Krull. Bob is still at I.U. and Bud Krull is doing graduate work at Harvard.

Dad had to go to the office to take care of an emergency and he wasn’t too happy about it. He as so “fed up” with a certain case one day this week I think he was ready to take off for a prolonged vacation. He just came in and from what he has said it wasn’t much of an emergency.

Barry’s Attitude Now

Nov. 6 – 1964

Dear David and Bonnie –

I called United yesterday and their round trip fare from here to Boston is $106- so the enclosed check for $212.00 should get you here and back.

This afternoon I am going to take Mrs. Myers to the office for a check-up. She said she was feeling so weak and thought she needed some attention. This morning I had to help with a program at the Presbyterian Church – World Community Day – in which all three – Presbyterian, Christian & Methodist churches participated.

The workmen came yesterday and got about half of the terrace removed. They had another job this morning so didn’t get back here. I would rather not be here when the air hammer is at work.

[page 2] We are still having glorious fall weather. There was a heavy frost this morning and heavy fog when I left home at 9 o’clock. These heavy frosts seem to retard the grass growth so Dad hasn’t had to mow for several weeks.

When Dad came home at noon he asked me if I had mailed you a check, so I can say yes the next time he asks. I thought I had better get it in the mail now.

What do you think of Barry’s attitude now? I wish he would go back to his “heaven” and stay there and forget about the Republican party. I am sure there are a number of high ranking Republicans who feel the same way. Did you hear him say he had his “heaven” meaning his home in Phoenix to go back to?

Airline Reservations

November 3, 1964

Dear David and Bonnie:

After talking to David this morning, if you have decided you want to fly home for Christmas, you go to the airport and make your reservations and let me know what it will cost and I will send you a check to cover. I think it will be better for you to make the reservations because you will know better at what time you will want to leave Boston. I think you only have to make a deposit when you make reservations.

There are two places I could go tonight – a Club meeting and a Class party, but I think I will stay home – that is if Dad is home – he may have to go to the hospital and take care of one of Dr. K’s patients (Dr. K should be home from his California vacation today or tomorrow). I want to follow the returns on TV, as I presume you will be doing.

Our Township and Town vote came out for Standard Time, so next weekend I suppose we will set our clocks with Chicago. It really doesn’t make much difference to me, but a lot of people do plenty of sqwaking (sp).

We are still enjoying very mild weather – just like summer and I am enjoying every minute of it.

Jerusalem Pottery

Tues. Oct. 6 – 1964

Dear David & Bonnie –

Tonight I attended a club meeting and sat by Audrey Hess Jackson from Lake Village. She asked me if you still had her W. Wilkie book “One World.” I told her I would write you about it. If you have it with you, please send it to her – her address is just Lake Village. If not, let me know. She said Wilkie had autographed it for her, so she doesn’t want to lose it.

This has been a busy week – since I had to spend all day attending a District Committee meeting in Lafayette yesterday and a church board meeting last night – which lasted almost 2 hours. This a.m. I attended a prayer meeting at the church – one every a.m. in preparation for Methodist renewal mission next week. We won’t be here for the meetings, except the last one of Fri. eve. We are planning to attend medical meeting in Indpls. Next week. Next week a Jurisdictional meeting is convening in Indianapolis, so I will get to attend one or two sessions since we will be in the city at that time.

We plan to go to Clay City Sunday and visit relatives.

[page 2] John’s sea freight arrived. He had to make two trips home to get it all transported to Champaign. The wood carvings were in the box. The small one I had purchased in Bali and the large one he received as a gift. I am displaying both in our living room, until John thinks he has a place to put his. I just hope he doesn’t find a place for his carving, but he probably will.

I wrote to our friends in Jordan and sent them some $ to buy some more pottery. So many people seemed to think a piece of Jerusalem pottery would be desirable. The box come yesterday and every piece in good condition. I owe them a thank you note, so I had better wind this up and write a thank you note.

Dear David and Bonnie:

I have mailed 16 capsules to Bonnie today (tetracycline 250 mg). Dad says any of those capsules you have like Declomycin would co, but we are sending the above mentioned. The box I sent last week is, of course, for both of you as a birthday present, as you probably know by this time. We are having another summer. Had the air conditioner on until we went to bed last night. We have our Japanese garden about finished. When we get it finished, will send you a picture of it. Uncle Floyd spend the weekend with Aunt Ruth and stopped to see us yesterday on his way home. He said she is feeling better, but has an appointment to see an eye Dr. tomorrow. She seems to be having some trouble with one eye. She plans to go home with Romaine the 11^th of October. We plan to attend the Medical Convention October 12 to 15.

Update on Garden and Knee

Dear David –

Keep this letter. It is a record as to when your policy went into effect.

Our Japanese garden is making progress. I waited all morning and half the p.m. for truck to bring rack so didn’t get to go to Lafayette for evergreens. Plan to go tomorrow. Alma Walker is going with me.

Dad’s knee is better, but he says he doesn’t want it bumped yet. He had thought he would have to see Dr. Ferguson, but didn’t have to.
